Mark 2:18–22 NKJV
The disciples of John and of the Pharisees were fasting. Then they came and said to Him, “Why do the disciples of John and of the Pharisees fast, but Your disciples do not fast?” And Jesus said to them, “Can the friends of the bridegroom fast while the bridegroom is with them? As long as they have the bridegroom with them they cannot fast. But the days will come when the bridegroom will be taken away from them, and then they will fast in those days. No one sews a piece of unshrunk cloth on an old garment; or else the new piece pulls away from the old, and the tear is made worse. And no one puts new wine into old wineskins; or else the new wine bursts the wineskins, the wine is spilled, and the wineskins are ruined. But new wine must be put into new wineskins.”

A fascinating passage of scripture that has nothing to do with fasting!
Yes, you heard me correctly, and despite the overwhelming verbiage from the multitude of commentators about fasting, perhaps even in your Bible, this passage really has nothing to do with fasting!!
It has everything to do however, with dead religion!
So let me be crystal clear:
May this church or any subsequent church plant from here, never be caught up in dead religious ceremony!
Not in dress.
Not in word.
Not in deed.
Peter Lange, in his commentary on the book of Mark said it best regarding this passage:

How often do sincere legal souls suffer themselves to be led away by traditionalists into an assault upon the freedom of the Gospel!—The greatest danger of the weak brethren (Rom. 14:1, 15), that they fall under the bondage of false brethren (2 Cor. 11:26; Gal. 2:4), and thus become separated from the peace of the Gospel.—Wrong alliances of Christians in the Church lead to wrong alliances of ecclesiastical things, even in opposition to the right alliances of both.

Very wise words indeed!
Because there are always people who gravitate toward traditionalism, restricting and even undermining their freedom in Christ!
If you are one of these, only Jesus can free you from such entanglements!

I. There is an old wine to discard.

2 Corinthians 5:17 NKJV
Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new.
A. It is tantalizing to the senses.
B. It is refreshing and sweet.
C. It is and should be intoxicating.

II. There is an old wine to discard.

A. It has gone flat.

Flat with the staleness of traditions!
Colossians 2:8 NKJV
Beware lest anyone cheat you through philosophy and empty deceit, according to the tradition of men, according to the basic principles of the world, and not according to Christ.
Colossians 2:8–9 NKJV
Beware lest anyone cheat you through philosophy and empty deceit, according to the tradition of men, according to the basic principles of the world, and not according to Christ. For in Him dwells all the fullness of the Godhead bodily;
Col. 2:9
There can be nothing worse for Christian liberty than traditionalism.
How many shrinking churches are disappearing altogether because they must do things the way they’ve always done them?
They can’t see that their traditions of music, Bible version, dress, service order, etc. hinders the gospel.
They can’t see that the wine they once enjoyed has become an acquired taste, suitable only for the card carrying members!
And if they were honest with themselves, they would agree that the wine has gone flat!

B. It is bitter to the taste.

Those who are exposed to it find it bitter to the palette and causing a rather sourpuss expression!
The bitterness manifests itself in all patterns of formalism, where the act itself is the focus and not the meaning.
How bitter that taste is when celebrating communion and it’s true meaning is discarded for a particular type of chalice, decorative elements, and so forth.

C. It will make one drunk with self serving ideology.

There is no room for anything new in traditionalism, not even the use of spiritual gifts because it doesn’t fit the tradition.
Or, anything
And this ideology becomes idolatry, where the worship crowd becomes the object of it’s own worship!
What is the remedy?

II. There is a new wine to taste.

Psalm 34:8 NKJV
Oh, taste and see that the Lord is good; Blessed is the man who trusts in Him!
2 Corinthians 5:17 NKJV
Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new.
The wine is the glorious gospel of Jesus Christ.
It is quite different than anything the world had seen prior.
And it still is!

A. It is tantalizing to the senses.

Probably no other feeling is as incredible than that deep feeling of exhilaration, in the heart and mind of a new born babe in Christ!
I remember when I had first understood what Jesus did for me, and I mean when it finally clicked in my heart.
It was like someone turned the light on for the first time!
It was more than any intellectual understanding, though that was part of it.
I was overcome by a sense of joy and peace, with an unbridled desire to scream it out and tell everyone!
It was like I was on fire by the flames of god’s love!

B. It is refreshing and sweet.

No longer did I have to do something to assuage God’s anger, or to gain favor in His sight, I was a child of God, and favored by His unconditional love.
It was the most refreshing feeling I could ever have known, and all i wanted was my family to know it as well!

C. It’s intoxication is progressive and fulfilling.

All I wanted and still want is to be with Him and experience the joy of His salvation!
To know Him better than I did yesterday!
To be pleasing in His sight!
To be in His word day and night!
To hear His Spirit speaking to me, and realizing my obedience to His message!
I cannot get enough of Him!!!
I wish that i could stop the world so I could enjoy Him more!
This is what Jesus was showing the Pharisees, that what they are hung up on, is nothing, because the Bridegroom is right here with them!
It is all about Jesus!
The Old wine is traditionalism that is all about us! The new wine is Jesus and it’s all about Him!
The new wine is Jesus and it’s all about Him!
The new wine is Jesus and it’s all about Him!
