12 For just as the body is one and has many parts, and all the parts of that body, though many, are one body—so also is Christ. 13 For we were all baptized by one Spirit into one body—whether Jews or Greeks, whether slaves or free—and we were all given one Spirit to drink. 14 Indeed, the body is not one part but many. 15 If the foot should say, “Because I’m not a hand, I don’t belong to the body,” it is not for that reason any less a part of the body. 16 And if the ear should say, “Because I’m not an eye, I don’t belong to the body,” it is not for that reason any less a part of the body. 17 If the whole body were an eye, where would the hearing be? If the whole body were an ear, where would the sense of smell be? 18 But as it is, God has arranged each one of the parts in the body just as he wanted. 19 And if they were all the same part, where would the body be? 20 As it is, there are many parts, but one body. 21 The eye cannot say to the hand, “I don’t need you!” Or again, the head can’t say to the feet, “I don’t need you!” 22 On the contrary, those parts of the body that are weaker are indispensable. 23 And those parts of the body that we consider less honorable, we clothe these with greater honor, and our unrespectable parts are treated with greater respect, 24 which our respectable parts do not need.
Instead, God has put the body together, giving greater honor to the less honorable, 25 so that there would be no division in the body, but that the members would have the same concern for each other. 26 So if one member suffers, all the members suffer with it; if one member is honored, all the members rejoice with it.
1 Cor 12:12
INTRODUCTION
INTRODUCTION
Some People come to the church to see what they can take instead of what they can do. It is far too common that when people come into a church they are looking for what they can get. And they leave frustrated because they did not get anything instead of coming to give.
We should never complain that we do not get anything out of Church we need to be contently giving. DO not misunderstand I want you to leave on Sunday morning different than how you came, it is not wrong to receive but if that is the reason to go church we have missed the entire point.

People can come into churches and say this church does not do__________ instead they should be saying there is a need in this church and I am going to fill it.
So today I ask you. Are you a functioning Church member?
One BODY v.12-13
One BODY v.12-13
12 For just as the body is one and has many members, and all the members of the body, though many, are one body, so it is with Christ. 13 For in one Spirit we were all baptized into one body—Jews or Greeks, slaves or free—and all were made to drink of one Spirit.
Every Christian is Part of The Body of Christ on Earth. as such Paul draws a picture of this Unity. which should exist inside the Church for it to function properly.
A human body is only efficient when it functions properly, as such a church only efficent when it functions properly.
In a human body parts of the body are not Jealous of one another, they complement each other. Thus We need to realize the following
1. We need to realize that we need each other.
There can be no such thing as isolation in the Church.
Far too often, people in the Church become so engrossed in the bit of the work that they are doing and so convinced of its supreme importance that they neglect or even criticize others who have chosen to do other work.
If the Church is to be a healthy body, we need the work that everyone can do.
2. We ought to respect each other.
In the body, there is no question of relative importance. If any limb or any organ ceases to function, the whole body is thrown out of gear.
It is so with the Church. All service ranks the same with God. Whenever we begin to think about our own importance in the Christian Church, the possibility of really Christian work is gone.
3. We ought to sympathize with each other.
If any one part of the body is affected, all the others suffer in sympathy because they cannot help it. The Church is a whole.
The person who cannot see beyond his or her own organization, the person who cannot see beyond his or her congregation—worse still, the person who cannot see beyond his or her own family circle—has not even begun to grasp the real unity of the Church.
This verse starts off the explanation the fact that the body has many parts but they all have one function just as the body of Christ has many parts but they all have different functions.
The Human body each part compliments each other as each believer compliments another believer.
No member of the body is un-needed just as no member of the Church is un needed.
every believer must be a functioning Church member
A church reflects both unity and diversity. God does not give you an option as to weather or not you do something in the Church you are to serve using your Gifts.
The Body of Christ is the Church.
every believer must be a functioning Church member
The Church is not a country club where you pay your dues and it serves you the Church is a place to serve because of your Love for God.
A church reflects both unity and diversity.
13 For in one Spirit we were all baptized into one body—Jews or Greeks, slaves or free—and all were made to drink of one Spirit.
Baptized here is not water Baptism, but rather spiritual baptism which takes place at salvation to every believer.
13 Now these three remain: faith, hope, and love—but the greatest of these is love.
The one who gives us our spiritual gifts is also the unifying agent we were all baptized in one spirit.
All believer no matter nationality or identity are all identified with Christ.
1 cor 12:13
The one who gives us our spiritual gifts is also the unifying agent we were all baptized in one spirit.
All believer no matter nationality or identity are all identified with Christ.
We were given one spirit to drink: This is past tence “were given” in addressing the corinthian believers Paul is sayin g at the point of salvation you were given the spirit and each of us were given the same.
We were given one spirit to drink: were past tense at salvation we were indwelt by the spirit, spirit Baptism
ONE MISSION v 14-19
ONE MISSION v 14-19
14 For the body does not consist of one member but of many. 15 If the foot should say, “Because I am not a hand, I do not belong to the body,” that would not make it any less a part of the body. 16 And if the ear should say, “Because I am not an eye, I do not belong to the body,” that would not make it any less a part of the body. 17 If the whole body were an eye, where would be the sense of hearing? If the whole body were an ear, where would be the sense of smell? 18 But as it is, God arranged the members in the body, each one of them, as he chose. 19 If all were a single member, where would the body be?
1 Cor 12:
All the prseeding does not mean that we all have the same gifts, but rather that no gift is better than another. We all have a diversity of Gifts just as the human body is made up of many parts so is the body of Christ made up of many people with many different gifts. and each part is dependent on the others.
The diversity within the Church does not mean there should be diversity in purpose or mindset. but rather that there are simply different people within a church.
We are all on the same team!
(Power Point)
10 Now I urge you, brothers and sisters, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that all of you agree in what you say, that there be no divisions among you, and that you be united with the same understanding and the same conviction.
The functions
16 And if the ear should say, “Because I’m not an eye, I don’t belong to the body,” it is not for that reason any less a part of the body. 17 If the whole body were an eye, where would the hearing be? If the whole body were an ear, where would the sense of smell be? 18 But as it is, God has arranged each one of the parts in the body just as he wanted.
1 cor 12:16-
1 cor 12:15-
15 If the foot should say, “Because I’m not a hand, I don’t belong to the body,” it is not for that reason any less a part of the body.
If the ear should say, “Because I’m not an eye, I don’t belong to the body
Now Paul moves to His point of diversity in the body because if it is to operate as one it must work together and each part must be willing to perform his or her function and must not try to function in an area which it was not made.
The whole Body cannot be a single part and function properly
If the foot should say, “Because I’m not a hand, I don’t belong to the body,
If the ear should say, “Because I’m not an eye, I don’t belong to the body
It is the same with the church members with one gift should not flaunt that gift or wish they had someone else’s gift
17 If the whole body were an eye, where would the hearing be? If the whole body were an ear, where would the sense of smell be?
The logic of this verse is compelling, nobody can function and only see, or only hear so it is for the Church to function properly it must have different gifts and offices
18 But as it is, God has arranged each one of the parts in the body just as he wanted.
18 But as it is, God has arranged each one of the parts in the body just as he wanted. 19 And if they were all the same part, where would the body be?
18 But as it is, God has arranged each one of the parts in the body just as he wanted.
Paul stresses the sovereignty of God in the proses. It is not just foolish, but also disobedient to desire someone else’s Gift, you are saying that you know better than God.
1 cor 12:18
Paul stresses the sovereignty of God in the proses. It is not just foolish, but also disobedient to desire someone else’s Gift, you are saying that you know better than God.
God sovereignly places each individual with his or her gifts in each local church and He or she must use their gifts, it is not a choice.
If the Church ignores this instruction it ignores God’s design for the Church.
19 And if they were all the same part, where would the body be?
19 And if they were all the same part, where would the body be?
Paul exposes the absurdity of the Corinthian believers’ mindset. A body composed of a single part is not a body and could not function as a body;
1
it is the same thing for believers, with each playing his or her own role. They must not fool themselves into thinking that one particular group or gifting represents the entire body of Christ.
ONE
ONE
20 As it is, there are many parts, yet one body.
21 The eye cannot say to the hand, “I have no need of you,” nor again the head to the feet, “I have no need of you.” 22 On the contrary, the parts of the body that seem to be weaker are indispensable, 23 and on those parts of the body that we think less honorable we bestow the greater honor, and our unpresentable parts are treated with greater modesty, 24 which our more presentable parts do not require. But God has so composed the body, giving greater honor to the part that lacked it, 25 that there may be no division in the body, but that the members may have the same care for one another. 26 If one member suffers, all suffer together; if one member is honored, all rejoice together.
AGAIN, THE FOCUS IS DRAWN TO THE FACT THAT IT IS ONE BODY
not only can we not say that the body can do without me, but we also may not say that we can do without the body.
There is no such thing as a freelancing Christian, no part of the body can take leave of the other members as though they were unnecessary.
12 For just as the body is one and has many members, and all the members of the body, though many, are one body, so it is with Christ.
1 cor 12
21 The eye cannot say to the hand, “I don’t need you!” Or again, the head can’t say to the feet, “I don’t need you!”
It is absolutely wrong to say or think that there are some members which are not necessary. Paul moves to the fact that mutual depemdance and concern for verrious members of the Body.
22 On the contrary, those parts of the body that are weaker are indispensable.
Those that seem weaker are important and ought to be treated with respect. So also, is it with the Church those who all they can do is pray, those who tithe little all are to be treated with respect.
23 And those parts of the body that we consider less honorable, we clothe these with greater honor, and our unrespectable parts are treated with greater respect,
1 cor 12:
23 And those parts of the body that we consider less honorable, we clothe these with greater honor, and our unrespectable parts are treated with greater respect, 24 which our respectable parts do not need.
Instead, God has put the body together, giving greater honor to the less honorable, 25 so that there would be no division in the body, but that the members would have the same concern for each other.
1 cor 12:23-
As in the human body there are some parts that seem weaker than others likewise there are some we deem less honorable.
As in the human body there are some parts that seem weaker than others likewise there are some we deem less honorable.
Some parts of the body get more attention and exposure than others while other parts that are less presentable are never noticed. as God views the body he does not see it in parts but in the whole.
If one were to take red and green they do not make a new shade of red or a new shade of green, but they make blue so is the same for the church all different kinds of people make up the church.
26 If one member suffers, all suffer together; if one member is honored, all rejoice together.
Just as individual organs of a human Body need each other so also do members of a church need each other.
A Church is a family, a team be a functioning part
9 Reasons you should be a functioning Church member
1.You were created for service
10 For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared ahead of time for us to do.
2.You are saved for service
9 He has saved us and called us with a holy calling, not according to our works, but according to his own purpose and grace, which was given to us in Christ Jesus before time began.
2. We are saved for service
This is why we are here and did not imediately go to heave the moment we got saved
3. You have been called for service
10 Just as each one has received a gift, use it to serve others, as good stewards of the varied grace of God.
4. You are gifted for service
10 Just as each one has received a gift, use it to serve others, as good stewards of the varied grace of God.
5. I am commanded to serve others
6. Your Church family needs my service
1 Therefore, brothers and sisters, in view of the mercies of God, I urge you to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God; this is your true worship.
It is not about you, Serve your family and serve your Church
Ask how you can serve.
Why do you go to a certin buisness because they have great custemor Service
7. You owe everything to Christ
Illustrate Simpsons God did noting we worked for this ourselves
58 Therefore, my dear brothers and sisters, be steadfast, immovable, always excelling in the Lord’s work, because you know that your labor in the Lord is not in vain.
8. You will be held accountable for my service
12 So then, each of us will give an account of himself to God.
you accepted Christ and then What
going to Church is not good enough going to Church is not doing God a favor it is to worship him
I did not like the songs today… I am sorry it was not for you it was to honor Him
a. I did not like the songs today… I am sorry it was not for you it was to honor Him
9. I will be rewarded for my service in eternity
23 Jesus replied to them, “The hour has come for the Son of Man to be glorified.
26 If anyone serves me, he must follow me. Where I am, there my servant also will be. If anyone serves me, the Father will honor him.
Application
Application
Are you a functioning Church member
Do you view the Church as a team and not a countery club
Do you have an attitude of service
Commitment
Commitment
I like the metaphor of membership. It’s not membership as in a civic organization or country club. It’s the kind of membership given to us in : “now you are the body of Christ, and individual members of it.” (). Because I am a member of the body of Christ, I must be a functioning member, whether I am an “eye” an “ear” or a “hand”.” As a functioning member, I will give. I will serve. I will minister. I will evangelize. I will study. I will seek to be a blessing to others. I will remember that “if one member is honored all the members rejoice with it” ()
1. I will minister.
1. I will minister.
12 equipping the saints for the work of ministry, to build up the body of Christ,
12 to equip the saints for the work of ministry, for building up the body of Christ, 13 until we all attain to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to mature manhood, to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ, 14 so that we may no longer be children, tossed to and fro by the waves and carried about by every wind of doctrine, by human cunning, by craftiness in deceitful schemes. 15 Rather, speaking the truth in love, we are to grow up in every way into him who is the head, into Christ, 16 from whom the whole body, joined and held together by every joint with which it is equipped, when each part is working properly, makes the body grow so that it builds itself up in love.
2. I will evangelize
5. I will evangelize
3. I will study.
4. I will seek to be a blessing to others.
5. I will I will remember that if one member suffers all the members suffer with it that if one member suffers all the members suffer with it
