(a people prepared: luke 1:17)
(draw near to God)
requires preparation...
James c4v8
Draw near to God, and he will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded.
Matthew 3:1–2 ESV
In those days John the Baptist came preaching in the wilderness of Judea, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.”
Matthew 3:1 define repentance:
(conventional focus: be sorrowful) But: Change your thinking; your actions / fruit.
Define repentance (using biblical stories):
What repentance meant to Nineveh.
Jonah 3:4 ESV
Jonah began to go into the city, going a day’s journey. And he called out, “Yet forty days, and Nineveh shall be overthrown!”
ESV4 Jonah began to go into the city, going a day’s journey. And he called out, “Yet forty days, and Nineveh shall be overthrown!”
2. How John presented repentance to Herod.
Matthew 14:3–4 ESV
For Herod had seized John and bound him and put him in prison for the sake of Herodias, his brother Philip’s wife, because John had been saying to him, “It is not lawful for you to have her.”
Matth
ESV3 For Herod had seized John and bound him and put him in prison for the sake of Herodias, his brother Philip’s wife, 4 because John had been saying to him, “It is not lawful for you to have her.”
3) John the Baptist’s Disciples:
Luke 3:10 ESV
And the crowds asked him, “What then shall we do?”
Luke 3
(John the Baptist)
Luke 3:11–14 ESV
And he answered them, “Whoever has two tunics is to share with him who has none, and whoever has food is to do likewise.” Tax collectors also came to be baptized and said to him, “Teacher, what shall we do?” And he said to them, “Collect no more than you are authorized to do.” Soldiers also asked him, “And we, what shall we do?” And he said to them, “Do not extort money from anyone by threats or by false accusation, and be content with your wages.”
ESV10 And the crowds asked him, “What then shall we do?”
ESV11 And he answered them, “Whoever has two tunics is to share with him who has none, and whoever has food is to do likewise.” 12 Tax collectors also came to be baptized and said to him, “Teacher, what shall we do?” 13 And he said to them, “Collect no more than you are authorized to do.” 14 Soldiers also asked him, “And we, what shall we do?” And he said to them, “Do not extort money from anyone by threats or by false accusation, and be content with your wages.”
Herod didn’t like the message (of repentance).
Luke 3:18–20 ESV
So with many other exhortations he preached good news to the people. But Herod the tetrarch, who had been reproved by him for Herodias, his brother’s wife, and for all the evil things that Herod had done, added this to them all, that he locked up John in prison.
ESV18 So with many other exhortations he preached good news to the people. 19 But Herod the tetrarch, who had been reproved by him for Herodias, his brother’s wife, and for all the evil things that Herod had done, 20 added this to them all, that he locked up John in prison.
ESV18 So with many other exhortations he preached good news to the people. 19 But Herod the tetrarch, who had been reproved by him for Herodias, his brother’s wife, and for all the evil things that Herod had done, 20 added this to them all, that he locked up John in prison.
4) The Gospel is presented in context of repentance:
Acts 2:37–38 ESV
Now when they heard this they were cut to the heart, and said to Peter and the rest of the apostles, “Brothers, what shall we do?” And Peter said to them, “Repent and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.
Acts 2:38 ESV
And Peter said to them, “Repent and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.
The Gospel is presented in context of repentance:
1 Corinthians 6:11 ESV
And such were some of you. But you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God.
ESV11 And such were some of you. But you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God.
they had repented of these things...
Chapter 6: 9 Or do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: neither the sexually immoral, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor men who practice homosexuality, 10 nor thieves, nor the greedy, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God.
A transformation:
2 Corinthians 12:20–21 ESV
For I fear that perhaps when I come I may find you not as I wish, and that you may find me not as you wish—that perhaps there may be quarreling, jealousy, anger, hostility, slander, gossip, conceit, and disorder. I fear that when I come again my God may humble me before you, and I may have to mourn over many of those who sinned earlier and have not repented of the impurity, sexual immorality, and sensuality that they have practiced.
2 Cor 12:20-21
...and I may have to mourn over many of those who sinned earlier and have not repented of the impurity, sexual immorality, and sensuality that they have practiced.
20 For I fear that perhaps when I come I may find you not as I wish, and that you may find me not as you wish—that perhaps there may be quarreling, jealousy, anger, hostility, slander, gossip, conceit, and disorder. 21 I fear that when I come again my God may humble me before you, ...and I may have to mourn over many of those who sinned earlier and have not repented of the impurity, sexual immorality, and sensuality that they have practiced.
> “have not repented” we must actively turn away from sin: how we think, how we speak, how we act. On going, sanctified living.Turning to God, to receive his Word. (first step in drawing near…)
Matthew 3:8 ESV
Bear fruit in keeping with repentance.
ESV8 Bear fruit in keeping with repentance.
ESV8 Bear fruit in keeping with repentance.
(do not presume Abraham)
[2nd part]Kingdom of Heaven at Hand. (repent, electricity is at hand.)Wherever God Rules… His Lordship is at hand. Jesus is King. When we pray for God’s will to be done [on earth] as in Heaven, we’re asking for God’s rule to enter the situation. we’re asking his will to be done. We’re Turning to God; to receive his Word. To receive his reign.
Come Thou Almighty King, Help us Thy name to sing, Help us to praise: Father, all-glorious, O’er all victorious, Come and reign over us, Ancient of Days.
Same message Jesus continued, and also into the Gospel/Church era:
ESV17 From that time Jesus began to preach, saying, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.”
remember Nineveh’s repentance:
ESV41 The men of Nineveh will rise up at the judgment with this generation and condemn it, for they repented at the preaching of Jonah, and behold, something greater than Jonah is here.
We’re Turning to God; to receive his Word
remember Peter’s statement (after pentacost)
ESV38 And Peter said to them, “Repent and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.
he also said this:
ESV7 The end of all things is at hand; therefore be self-controlled and sober-minded for the sake of your prayers. 8 Above all, keep loving one another earnestly, since love covers a multitude of sins. 9 Show hospitality to one another without grumbling. 10 As each has received a gift, use it to serve one another, as good stewards of God’s varied grace: 11 whoever speaks, as one who speaks oracles of God; whoever serves, as one who serves by the strength that God supplies—in order that in everything God may be glorified through Jesus Christ. To him belong glory and dominion forever and ever. Amen.
nothing left to be fulfilled… end is near… eternity is at hand.work of repentance: self-controlled, sober-minded… for effective praying...We’re Turning to God; to receive his Word (in his kingdom)
ESV16 Let us then with confidence draw near to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need.
------
Nearness to God is Hot. Presence of God is often described as fire.
Burning Bush.
Lord descended on Sinai in Fire.
Pillar of fire that led Israel.
Isaiah’s unclean lips were touched with a burning coal... 6:6
John the Baptist says Jesus will baptize with Spirit and Fire.

7 and to grant relief to you who are afflicted as well as to us, when the Lord Jesus is revealed from heaven with his mighty angels 8 in flaming fire, inflicting vengeance

2Thes 1:7 and to grant relief to you who are afflicted as well as to us, when the Lord Jesus is revealed from heaven with his mighty angels 8 in flaming fire, inflicting vengeance
each one’s work will become manifest, for the Day will disclose it, because it will be revealed by fire, and the fire will test what sort of work each one has done.
Do we know what we are asking for?
Song 732. Revive Us Again. vs 5. FIRE FROM ABOVE.
