Spoken Word

The spoken Word by Jesus displays the authority and the power of God at work in Him. And in our passage today we will see several powers at work, but one power prevailed!
We will see the power of Satan
We will see the power of society
And finally the power of the Savior
Jesus had displayed His power in calming the storm (Mk4:39) and in our passage today we will see he power and authority displayed in the freeing of a man (MK5:8)
Mark 4:39 NASB95
39 And He got up and rebuked the wind and said to the sea, “Hush, be still.” And the wind died down and it became perfectly calm.
A quick view of our passage and we see from the storm at see they arrive in the area of the Gaderenes (Mk5:1)
This is located on the east side of the Sea of Galilee, and in some writing like Matthew it may say Gersasenes, or Gergesenes, or even the area of Decapolis (Mk5:20)
From wild sea (4:39) to wild man (5:2), who cannot be bound (5:3-5)
From cannot be bound to even the demon humbling himself before the Lord (Mk5:6-9); begging not to be tormented (5:7).
From speaking to Jesus, to Jesus acting (5:10-13)
To the people who then begged for Jesus to leave (5:14-18)
To the man begging to go with Jesus; and Jesus bigger plan for Him (5:19-20)
In our passage you can see three powers (forces that are at work)
The power (force) of Satan at work (Jn10:10; 1Pt5:8-9; Eph2:1-3)
We need never underestimate the destructive power of Satan. His purpose is to Kill steal and destroy as noted in Jn10:10; He goes by Satan, goes by the Devil meaning adversary as noted in 1Pt5:8-9) He is at work in the lives of the unbelievers.
Revelation 9:11 NASB95
11 They have as king over them, the angel of the abyss; his name in Hebrew is Abaddon, and in the Greek he has the name Apollyon.
1 Peter 5:8–9 NASB95
8 Be of sober spirit, be on the alert. Your adversary, the devil, prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour. 9 But resist him, firm in your faith, knowing that the same experiences of suffering are being accomplished by your brethren who are in the world.
Ephesians 2:1–2 NASB95
1 And you were dead in your trespasses and sins, 2 in which you formerly walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, of the spirit that is now working in the sons of disobedience.
Ephesians 2:3 NASB95
3 Among them we too all formerly lived in the lusts of our flesh, indulging the desires of the flesh and of the mind, and were by nature children of wrath, even as the rest.
In our story today the man under the power of Satan loses everything.
He lost his home and now lives in the tombs
He lost his decency and now runs around naked in the tombs
He lost his self-control and lived like wild animals
He lost his hope and peace. But Jesus came through the storm to rescue and restore!
The Power (force) of society (Lk8:29)
Luke 8:29 NASB95
29 For He had commanded the unclean spirit to come out of the man. For it had seized him many times; and he was bound with chains and shackles and kept under guard, and yet he would break his bonds and be driven by the demon into the desert.
Society because it was not able to help him, handle him, isolated him and bound him. Does society try to do this today? With all the scientific achievements society still cannot cope with or handle the problems caused by Satan and sin. Society is not able to permanently solve these problems are they? But we know One who is
Power (force) of the Savior (Mk1:25; Mk4:39; Mk5:8; 13)
Jesus came and did what others did not, or could not. Jesus came in love and went through a storm to do it. The storm He went through could have been satanic in nature due to the it is the same phrase used in Mk1:25
Mark 1:25 NASB95
25 And Jesus rebuked him, saying, “Be quiet, and come out of him!”
and look at
Mark 4:39 NASB95
39 And He got up and rebuked the wind and said to the sea, “Hush, be still.” And the wind died down and it became perfectly calm.
Satan wanted to keep Jesus from coming to the one who needed Him here in our story, but Jesus had victory over the storm and has victory over the demons we see in the story!
Still as we look at this story you will those who were afraid of Jesus and one who was not. Having said that let’s look at the passage.
Mark 5:1–2 NASB95
1 They came to the other side of the sea, into the country of the Gerasenes. 2 When He got out of the boat, immediately a man from the tombs with an unclean spirit met Him,
Mark 5:3–4 NASB95
3 and he had his dwelling among the tombs. And no one was able to bind him anymore, even with a chain; 4 because he had often been bound with shackles and chains, and the chains had been torn apart by him and the shackles broken in pieces, and no one was strong enough to subdue him.
Mark 5:5–6 NASB95
5 Constantly, night and day, he was screaming among the tombs and in the mountains, and gashing himself with stones. 6 Seeing Jesus from a distance, he ran up and bowed down before Him;
Mark 5:7–8 NASB95
7 and shouting with a loud voice, he said, “What business do we have with each other, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? I implore You by God, do not torment me!” 8 For He had been saying to him, “Come out of the man, you unclean spirit!”
Mark 5:9–10 NASB95
9 And He was asking him, “What is your name?” And he said to Him, “My name is Legion; for we are many.” 10 And he began to implore Him earnestly not to send them out of the country.
Mark 5:11–12 NASB95
11 Now there was a large herd of swine feeding nearby on the mountain. 12 The demons implored Him, saying, “Send us into the swine so that we may enter them.”
Mark 5:13–14 NASB95
13 Jesus gave them permission. And coming out, the unclean spirits entered the swine; and the herd rushed down the steep bank into the sea, about two thousand of them; and they were drowned in the sea. 14 Their herdsmen ran away and reported it in the city and in the country. And the people came to see what it was that had happened.
Mark 5:15–16 NASB95
15 They came to Jesus and observed the man who had been demon-possessed sitting down, clothed and in his right mind, the very man who had had the “legion”; and they became frightened. 16 Those who had seen it described to them how it had happened to the demon-possessed man, and all about the swine.
Mark 5:17–18 NASB95
17 And they began to implore Him to leave their region. 18 As He was getting into the boat, the man who had been demon-possessed was imploring Him that he might accompany Him.
Mark 5:19–20 NASB95
19 And He did not let him, but He said to him, “Go home to your people and report to them what great things the Lord has done for you, and how He had mercy on you.” 20 And he went away and began to proclaim in Decapolis what great things Jesus had done for him; and everyone was amazed.
What do you see, what do you notice, what sticks out to you?
So I mentioned a minute ago of who was afraid of Jesus, so let’s get into this.

The demons who were Legion, were they afraid?

Jesus invokes fear, or should invoke fear, for the good or for the bad. So, what kind of fear do the demons have in our passage, and should we be afraid?
So, do you think the demons were afraid, if so, why?
The demons were afraid, the begged Jesus (Mk5:7; Mk1:23-24)
We already read Mk5:7; but that is similar to Mk1:23-24 and I want to bring that one in.
Mark 1:23–24 NASB95
23 Just then there was a man in their synagogue with an unclean spirit; and he cried out, 24 saying, “What business do we have with each other, Jesus of Nazareth? Have You come to destroy us? I know who You are—the Holy One of God!”
Jesus came to destroy the work of the devil (1Jn3:8)
Jesus came to destroy the work of the devil (1Jn3:8)
1 John 3:8 NASB95
8 the one who practices sin is of the devil; for the devil has sinned from the beginning. The Son of God appeared for this purpose, to destroy the works of the devil.
The demons knew time was limited and their time was coming (Mt8:29)
The demons knew time was limited and their time was coming (Mt8:29)
Matthew 8:29 NASB95
29 And they cried out, saying, “What business do we have with each other, Son of God? Have You come here to torment us before the time?”
The demons knew what awaited them (Mt25:41; 2Pt2:4) as did the devil (Rev20:10)
The demons knew what awaited them (Mt25:41; 2Pt2:4) as did the devil (Rev20:10)
Oh yes, the demons were afraid, they were terrified and rightly so.
So, should we be afraid? Afraid of Jesus?
Should we be afraid? Yes, if we are not ready for the coming of the Lord (2The1:7-9)
Should we be afraid? Yes, for if not prepared we will experience everlasting fire (Mt25:41, 46)
For those who are not written the lambs book of life cannot escape the lake of fire (Rev20:15, 21:8)
Revelation 20:15 NASB95
15 And if anyone’s name was not found written in the book of life, he was thrown into the lake of fire.
Revelation 21:8 NASB95
8 “But for the cowardly and unbelieving and abominable and murderers and immoral persons and sorcerers and idolaters and all liars, their part will be in the lake that burns with fire and brimstone, which is the second death.”
We should be afraid, should be terrified if we are not prepared.

The Citizens of the region, were they afraid?

Fear, who wants it, who needs it, and is fear always true? As we look at the story and the citizens were they fearful and rightly so?
Were they af
So, do you think the people of the region were afraid?
Yes, but unjustifiably so (Mk5:14-15)
Mark 5:14–15 NASB95
14 Their herdsmen ran away and reported it in the city and in the country. And the people came to see what it was that had happened. 15 They came to Jesus and observed the man who had been demon-possessed sitting down, clothed and in his right mind, the very man who had had the “legion”; and they became frightened.
Yes, to point asked Jesus to leave region (Mk5:17)
Yes, to point asked Jesus to leave region (Mk5:17)
Mark 5:17 NASB95
17 And they began to implore Him to leave their region.
Their fear was of the unknown, and they were unwilling to know
Their fear was of the unknown, and they were unwilling to know
Their fear kept them from great blessings
Do we know people like this?
Now as Christians we should not be afraid
Of learning about Jesus and what He gives us (Mt11:28-30; Eph1:3)
Of learning of the freedom He offers us (Jn8:31-32; 34-36)
John 8:31–32 NASB95
31 So Jesus was saying to those Jews who had believed Him, “If you continue in My word, then you are truly disciples of Mine; 32 and you will know the truth, and the truth will make you free.”
John 8:34–35 NASB95
34 Jesus answered them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, everyone who commits sin is the slave of sin. 35 “The slave does not remain in the house forever; the son does remain forever.
Jn8:36
John 8:36 NASB95
36 “So if the Son makes you free, you will be free indeed.
So, don’t be afraid to learn about Jesus!
Now this brings us to our last one.

The demoniac who was healed, was he afraid?

Look at the actions of the one who was touched by Jesus, what can we learn, what can we apply?
Was the demoniac afraid, or full of fear of Jesus?
No, he begged to be with Jesus (Mk5:18-19)
Mark 5:18–19 NASB95
18 As He was getting into the boat, the man who had been demon-possessed was imploring Him that he might accompany Him. 19 And He did not let him, but He said to him, “Go home to your people and report to them what great things the Lord has done for you, and how He had mercy on you.”
What did the man do (v.18)? (He implored Jesus to go with Him)
Now, subjectively speaking, why do you think the man did that?
Jesus had bigger plans for him, didn’t He (Mk5:19)
What as the bigger plan (v.19)? - go and tell the people!
Because of Jesus words; then coupled with the man’s words it lead to amazement (Mk5:20)
Mark 5:20 NASB95
20 And he went away and began to proclaim in Decapolis what great things Jesus had done for him; and everyone was amazed.
what as the result (v.
No, he was not afraid, not filled with fear, but with faith!
No, he was not afraid, not filled with fear, but with faith!
Again, here comes some application for us, should we be afraid?
No, for Jesus loved us and washed us from our sins (Rev1:5)
Revelation 1:5 NASB95
5 and from Jesus Christ, the faithful witness, the firstborn of the dead, and the ruler of the kings of the earth. To Him who loves us and released us from our sins by His blood—
No, Jesus prepared us by sanctifying us to share the hope that is in us (1Pt3:15)
No, Jesus prepared us by sanctifying us to share the hope that is in us (1Pt3:15)
1 Peter 3:15 NASB95
15 but sanctify Christ as Lord in your hearts, always being ready to make a defense to everyone who asks you to give an account for the hope that is in you, yet with gentleness and reverence;
Who was afraid in this story?
Those who were unwilling to learn about Jesus
Those, who today, are unwilling to learn about Jesus and repent of sins
Who was not afraid in this story?
The demoniac who knew what Jesus did for him
The ones who today know the same and share the same with others!
May we encounter Jesus daily through His Word and empowered by His Spirit that we too may be willing to share Him with others because we understand what we have in Him and through Him!
