Introduction: Presidential Appointments

Every 4 or 8 years, we elect a new President of the United States
And a new round of presidential appointments get started
These are the people who are suppose to serve the President in serving the citizens of this country
The president appoints cabinet members such as the Attorney General
The president appoints FBI and CIA directors
The president appoint National Homeland Security Directors
The president appoints supreme court nominees as you probably saw in the news this past week and will see this week
The president also appoints ambassadors who are dispatched around the world to represent the interests of the President and hence the citizens of these United States of America.
If you were to read the Constitution of the United States of America Article II section 2 which discusses matter regarding Presidential Appointments you would read
he (and maybe one day will have to be amended to say he or she) shall nominate, and by and with the Advice and Consent of the Senate, shall appoint Ambassadors, other public Ministers and Consuls, Judges of the supreme Court, and all other Officers of the United States, whose Appointments are not herein otherwise provided for,
Presidential appointments with Senate confirmation (PAS): These positions require a congressional hearing and a confirmation vote of the full Senate under the Appointments Clause of the United States Constitution.

Presidential appointments without Senate confirmation (PA): These appointments do not require a Senate hearing or vote. As at 2016, there were 353 PA positions, most of which were in the Executive Office of the President.

Transitions: Jesus’ Presidential Appointment without the confirmation of the religious leaders of the time

Luke 6:12 ESV
In these days he went out to the mountain to pray, and all night he continued in prayer to God.

Disciples Are Appointed (By The Grace Of God)

And he appointed the twelve
not by their merit or reputation
but like we said in part 1 of this series
Jesus selects disciples within a committee of three- God the Father (providing the plan), God the Son (doing the work), and God the Holy Spirit (God in man helping to make man holy)
appointed when read in its original language means “God’s dealings with man”
not by their merit or reputation
but like we said in part 1 of this series last Sunday
Jesus selects disciples within a committee of three- God the Father (providing the plan), God the Son (doing the work on the cross and training he first disciples), and God the Holy Spirit (God in man helping to make man holy)
Ephesians 2:8–10 ESV
For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast. For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.
Ephesians 2:8-10
to cause someone to assume a particular type of function
Jeremiah 29:11–13 ESV
For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans for welfare and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope. Then you will call upon me and come and pray to me, and I will hear you. You will seek me and find me, when you seek me with all your heart.
to cause someone to assume a particular type of function
to assign to a task
to cause people to assume responsibilities for a task
1 Corinthians 15:9–11 ESV
For I am the least of the apostles, unworthy to be called an apostle, because I persecuted the church of God. But by the grace of God I am what I am, and his grace toward me was not in vain. On the contrary, I worked harder than any of them, though it was not I, but the grace of God that is with me. Whether then it was I or they, so we preach and so you believed.
1 Corinthians 15:9-
2 Corinthians 5:14–15 ESV
For the love of Christ controls us, because we have concluded this: that one has died for all, therefore all have died; and he died for all, that those who live might no longer live for themselves but for him who for their sake died and was raised.
2 Corinthians 5:

Disciples Not Only Belong But Do!

Matthew 7:24 ESV
“Everyone then who hears these words of mine and does them will be like a wise man who built his house on the rock.
Matthew 7:26 ESV
And everyone who hears these words of mine and does not do them will be like a foolish man who built his house on the sand.
James 1:22–25 ESV
But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves. For if anyone is a hearer of the word and not a doer, he is like a man who looks intently at his natural face in a mirror. For he looks at himself and goes away and at once forgets what he was like. But the one who looks into the perfect law, the law of liberty, and perseveres, being no hearer who forgets but a doer who acts, he will be blessed in his doing.
Though the disciples have been appointed as a group of 12.
And they belong to something- they are a part of Jesus’ activity in the earth
And they are a part of Jesus’ activity in the earth
But they also are active participants and servants
apostle- an envoy, an ambassador, missionary
Illustration: Appointment without responsibility is irresponsible and dangerous
Making decisions in a vacuum without understanding the weight and gravity of one’s decisions leads to outcomes that hurt those on the margins of society
speak out against governmental policies that disproportionately adversely affect
the poor
single mothers
widows and retirees
fatherless children
women
children- and their education
those with drug and alcohol addiction
the strangers- we call them immigrants today within our society

1 Chronicles 12:32 ESV
Of Issachar, men who had understanding of the times, to know what Israel ought to do, 200 chiefs, and all their kinsmen under their command.
Illustration: African-American Vernacular English of #staywoke
woke became a watch word in parts of the black community for those who were self-aware, questioning the dominant paradigm and striving for something better. But stay woke and woke became part of a wider discussion in 2014, immediately following the shooting of Michael Brown in Ferguson, Missouri. The word woke became entwined with the Black Lives Matter movement; instead of just being a word that signaled awareness of injustice or racial tension, it became a word of action. Activists were woke and called on others to stay woke.
Mark 13:1 ESV
And as he came out of the temple, one of his disciples said to him, “Look, Teacher, what wonderful stones and what wonderful buildings!”
Mark 13:32–36 ESV
“But concerning that day or that hour, no one knows, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father. Be on guard, keep awake. For you do not know when the time will come. It is like a man going on a journey, when he leaves home and puts his servants in charge, each with his work, and commands the doorkeeper to stay awake. Therefore stay awake—for you do not know when the master of the house will come, in the evening, or at midnight, or when the rooster crows, or in the morning— lest he come suddenly and find you asleep.
Luke 12:45 ESV
But if that servant says to himself, ‘My master is delayed in coming,’ and begins to beat the male and female servants, and to eat and drink and get drunk,
Luke 21:34–38 ESV
“But watch yourselves lest your hearts be weighed down with dissipation and drunkenness and cares of this life, and that day come upon you suddenly like a trap. For it will come upon all who dwell on the face of the whole earth. But stay awake at all times, praying that you may have strength to escape all these things that are going to take place, and to stand before the Son of Man.” And every day he was teaching in the temple, but at night he went out and lodged on the mount called Olivet. And early in the morning all the people came to him in the temple to hear him.
Luke 21:340
dissipation is behavior which is completely without moral restraint
Mark 14:37 ESV
And he came and found them sleeping, and he said to Peter, “Simon, are you asleep? Could you not watch one hour?
Disciples are on a mission for Jesus Christ
Disciples have a ministry!
1 Corinthians 12:11 ESV
All these are empowered by one and the same Spirit, who apportions to each one individually as he wills.
Disciples have a ministry of reconciliation
Disciples are on a mission for Jesus Christ
Disciples have a ministry!
2 Corinthians 5:16–20 ESV
From now on, therefore, we regard no one according to the flesh. Even though we once regarded Christ according to the flesh, we regard him thus no longer. Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come. All this is from God, who through Christ reconciled us to himself and gave us the ministry of reconciliation; that is, in Christ God was reconciling the world to himself, not counting their trespasses against them, and entrusting to us the message of reconciliation. Therefore, we are ambassadors for Christ, God making his appeal through us. We implore you on behalf of Christ, be reconciled to God.
2 Corinthians 5:16-

Disciples Are Placed With Jesus

Jesus is teacher & leader
Placed with Jesus in the Head-
disciples learn by listening to Jesus’ WORDs
Mark 4:1–3 ESV
Again he began to teach beside the sea. And a very large crowd gathered about him, so that he got into a boat and sat in it on the sea, and the whole crowd was beside the sea on the land. And he was teaching them many things in parables, and in his teaching he said to them: “Listen! Behold, a sower went out to sow.
Disciples listen and pay attention to Jesus’ WORD
Illustration: Makes so sense to come to church and not pay attention to the preached word and listen to good news without applying within your life
Mark 4:1-3
Why?
Romans 1:14–17 ESV
I am under obligation both to Greeks and to barbarians, both to the wise and to the foolish. So I am eager to preach the gospel to you also who are in Rome. For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes, to the Jew first and also to the Greek. For in it the righteousness of God is revealed from faith for faith, as it is written, “The righteous shall live by faith.”
Romans 1:14
Mark 4:9 ESV
And he said, “He who has ears to hear, let him hear.”
Mark 4:10–12 ESV
And when he was alone, those around him with the twelve asked him about the parables. And he said to them, “To you has been given the secret of the kingdom of God, but for those outside everything is in parables, so that “ ‘they may indeed see but not perceive, and may indeed hear but not understand, lest they should turn and be forgiven.’ ”
Mark 3:10
Disciples are cleaned & taught by the WORD of Jesus
John 1:1–5 ESV
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things were made through him, and without him was not any thing made that was made. In him was life, and the life was the light of men. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.
Come a little closer to me with your eyes, ears, heart!
It is the WORD through the power of the Holy Spirit that helps get our heart right and thus help us be holy as the LORD God is holy
You would have never known to
Philippians 4:4–7 ESV
Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, rejoice. Let your reasonableness be known to everyone. The Lord is at hand; do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.
Philippians 4:4
Philippians 4:4 ESV
Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, rejoice.
Philippians 4:6–7 ESV
do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.
Philippians 4:6-7
You would have known that
Philippians 4:13 ESV
I can do all things through him who strengthens me.
Philippians 4:13
Philippians 4:19 ESV
And my God will supply every need of yours according to his riches in glory in Christ Jesus.
Philippians 4:19
As well as
Philippians 1:6 ESV
And I am sure of this, that he who began a good work in you will bring it to completion at the day of Jesus Christ.
Philippians
Turn to one of your neighbors shout:
“Be patient with me, God is not through with me yet!”
Disciples come and go with Jesus
Heart- disciples love (the LORD and others) i.e. they care
Because the Bible says
Psalm 119:11–12 ESV
I have stored up your word in my heart, that I might not sin against you. Blessed are you, O Lord; teach me your statutes!
Psalm 51:10 ESV
Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me.
Psalm 119:12 ESV
Blessed are you, O Lord; teach me your statutes!
not by their merit or reputation
Jeremiah 29:11–13 ESV
For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans for welfare and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope. Then you will call upon me and come and pray to me, and I will hear you. You will seek me and find me, when you seek me with all your heart.
but like we said in part 1 of this series
Disciples care about the least of these within our society
Jesus selects disciples within a committee of three- God the Father (providing the plan), God the Son (doing the work), and God the Holy Spirit (God in man helping to make man holy)
Matthew 25:34–40 ESV
Then the King will say to those on his right, ‘Come, you who are blessed by my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world. For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me, I was naked and you clothed me, I was sick and you visited me, I was in prison and you came to me.’ Then the righteous will answer him, saying, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you drink? And when did we see you a stranger and welcome you, or naked and clothe you? And when did we see you sick or in prison and visit you?’ And the King will answer them, ‘Truly, I say to you, as you did it to one of the least of these my brothers, you did it to me.’
Matthew 25:34–46 ESV
Then the King will say to those on his right, ‘Come, you who are blessed by my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world. For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me, I was naked and you clothed me, I was sick and you visited me, I was in prison and you came to me.’ Then the righteous will answer him, saying, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you drink? And when did we see you a stranger and welcome you, or naked and clothe you? And when did we see you sick or in prison and visit you?’ And the King will answer them, ‘Truly, I say to you, as you did it to one of the least of these my brothers, you did it to me.’ “Then he will say to those on his left, ‘Depart from me, you cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels. For I was hungry and you gave me no food, I was thirsty and you gave me no drink, I was a stranger and you did not welcome me, naked and you did not clothe me, sick and in prison and you did not visit me.’ Then they also will answer, saying, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry or thirsty or a stranger or naked or sick or in prison, and did not minister to you?’ Then he will answer them, saying, ‘Truly, I say to you, as you did not do it to one of the least of these, you did not do it to me.’ And these will go away into eternal punishment, but the righteous into eternal life.”
Hands- they are fruitful for the kingdom of God
Disciples do not get ahead of Jesus
Jesus is teacher & leader
John 15:1–5 ESV
“I am the true vine, and my Father is the vinedresser. Every branch in me that does not bear fruit he takes away, and every branch that does bear fruit he prunes, that it may bear more fruit. Already you are clean because of the word that I have spoken to you. Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit by itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in me. I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing.

Disciples work together with Jesus
2 Corinthians 6:1 ESV
Working together with him, then, we appeal to you not to receive the grace of God in vain.
1 John 3:1 ESV
See what kind of love the Father has given to us, that we should be called children of God; and so we are. The reason why the world does not know us is that it did not know him.
John 15:1
2 Corinthians 6:1
Can I get a witness!
Romans 8:28–29 ESV
And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose. For those whom he foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son, in order that he might be the firstborn among many brothers.
John 3:16 ESV
“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.

You don't have to worry cause I'm coming Back to where I should have always stayed And now I've heard the maybe to your story And it's enough love for me to stay
Can it be I stayed away too long Did I leave your mind when I was gone Well, it's not my thing trying to get back But this time let me tell you where I'm at
I want to, want to be where you are (ooh aah)
Please don't close the door to our future There's so many things we haven't tried I gonna love you better than I used to And give you all the love I have inside
I was sinking deep in sin, far from the peaceful shore, Very deeply stained within, sinking to rise no more; But the Master of the sea heard my despairing cry, From the waters lifted me, now safe am I.
Refrain: Love lifted me! Love lifted me! When nothing else could help, Love lifted me. Love lifted me! Love lifted me! When nothing else could help, Love lifted me.
2 All my heart to Him I give, ever to Him I'll cling, In his blessed presence live, ever his praises sing. Love so mighty and so true merits my soul's best songs; Faithful loving service, too, to Him belongs. [Refrain]
3 Souls in danger, look above, Jesus completely saves; He will lift you by His love out of the angry waves; He's the master of the sea, billows His will obey; He your Savior wants to be, be saved today.
John 3:16 ESV
“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.
Colossians 3:1–4 ESV
If then you have been raised with Christ, seek the things that are above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. Set your minds on things that are above, not on things that are on earth. For you have died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God. When Christ who is your life appears, then you also will appear with him in glory.
You see, on one Friday up on a hill called Golgotha
Colossians 3:1 ESV

A man named Jesus died on a old rugged cross
He died for you and I!
He died for you and I
But on the third day he got up with all power!
Matthew 28:18–19 ESV
And Jesus came and said to them, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit,
And I my sanctified mind, I can imagine
That Jesus probably showed the disciples His hands!
And then said, now you go be my hands on earth!
That means discipleship is not easy
Luke 9:23 ESV
And he said to all, “If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me.
This man named Jesus now has ascended to heaven
Jesus sits at the right hand of God the Father
Making intercessions for you and I
Ephesians 2:8–10 ESV
For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast. For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.
Ephesians 2:4–10 ESV
But God, being rich in mercy, because of the great love with which he loved us, even when we were dead in our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ—by grace you have been saved— and raised us up with him and seated us with him in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus, so that in the coming ages he might show the immeasurable riches of his grace in kindness toward us in Christ Jesus. For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast. For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.
Ephesians 3:20–21 ESV
Now to him who is able to do far more abundantly than all that we ask or think, according to the power at work within us, to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, forever and ever. Amen.
Ephesians 2:4–9 ESV
But God, being rich in mercy, because of the great love with which he loved us, even when we were dead in our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ—by grace you have been saved— and raised us up with him and seated us with him in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus, so that in the coming ages he might show the immeasurable riches of his grace in kindness toward us in Christ Jesus. For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast.
