Does baptism save?
Baptism, which corresponds to this (Flood [i.e. OT]) now saves you.
How does baptism save? I want... , which is a Tabernacle text.
Israel could… furniture… sola scriptura. I want to look at the last piece of furniture this morning which is the bronze basin. It was basically a sink, a place to wash your hands and feet.
Israel would enter the enclosed curtains… Behind this altar, between the Tent of Meeting was this sink . What was the purpose of this washing? Life . It was an important washing.
Now lets enter the Tent of Meeting.
“Bread of Presence.”
“Table of Incense.”
Menorah Tree, a lamp of life.
They could not worship without washing. They were saved by water, “so they may not die” to worship God.
Physical death
Not just here, but throughout the OT we see the necessity of water for life. The earthcleansed the earth of sin… iGod redeemed Israel… gained the Promised Land… began his ministry… Nicodemus… born of water and the Spirit.
Why is there so much water in the Bible?
Because God is holy! Let me ask you this, “Who likes a dirty house?” The Tabernacle was God’s house. God wanted a clean house . Dirt ruins and so God demanded holiness, purity so dirty priests could not enter his house. So, God gave them a sink and joined to it this promise that they were washed from all their sins as certainly… You might be thinking, “How were they immersed in this little bowel?”
Study immersion
What about the NT? Passover with the Disciples.
Fenced: Tincture is the sign of unbelief. Immersed in the wine, like Pharaoh in the Red Sea, he was cut off from the Table of the Lord.
Through water however they were saved.
Baptism saves us from God’s wrath. Notice here, we profane ourselves. We are polluters. Sinners! Who does the cleansing? God. Only the Lord can remove the threat of death. It is God who cleanses his people from their sins. How does he clean: water. This Water removes sin and makes you new.
This washing of water is God’s action toward us. It removes our sin and makes us new.
The power of baptism is the Resurrection of Jesus Christ. The Fathers removes our sin and makes us new through his Son, by the power of the Holy Spirit. God has joined this promise to water that you may not die. Baptism saves!
Saves from what? Through baptism, we are no longer guilty, no longer condemned. The answer is God… The water makes you clean that you may… Through baptism you and your children can now learnpray… Christian… separated…
Curse to pray
There is here in baptism a blessing and a curse. The blessing is salvation and worship . We worship God by means of baptism. That is the blessing. The curse, is here too for without washing... without…
There is here in baptism a blessing and a curse. The blessing is salvation and worship “or when they come near the altar to minister, to burn a food offering, to the Lord… they shall wash with water.” We worship God by means of baptism. That is the blessing. The curse, is here too for without washing there was no worship, no God, not atonement, to be left without hope in this world.
I asked earlier who was immersed in Scripture?
Left out (NT)
Jesus Christ was baptized into death that we might pass through on dry ground to the Promised Land. Christ was washed away, that we might be sprinkled clean in his blood from all our sin. The curse has been paid for us who believe, we are no longer in our sin. We are in Christ.
Do we need further washing? At birth a nurse… we daily become disgusting, uncomfortable, and unacceptable. The same holds true spiritually. We have been born again, yet continue to sin. No longer condemned by the dirt in our baptism, we are still corrupted by sin daily. So we need a weekly cleansing.
Jesus taught his disciples this in . Here he tied the servants towel around his waste and began to wash the disciples’ feet and to wipe them with the towel. When he came to Peter, Peter responded:
“Lord, do you wash my feet… You shall never wash my feet.” Jesus answered him, “If I do not wash you, you have no share with me.” 9 Simon Peter said to him, “Lord, not my feet only but also my hands and my head!” 10 Jesus said to him, “The one who has bathed does not need to wash, except for his feet, but is completely clean. And you are clean.”
By Peter’s profession of faith he was clean—justified. Yet, with dirty feet he was unclean in his sanctification. Justified he was no longer condemned, yet as a sinner he was corrupt. How was he cleansed? By Christ incarnate who serves his people. Christ incarnate continues this service. We call it the gospel. By it preached and revealed in the sacraments God the Holy Spirit lifts us to heaven to be cleansed by our risen Lord himself.
Here is the necessity of faith. So why do we baptize our children? Because they need Jesus. Our children should not be excluded from baptism because of their inability to understand it. Without their knowledge they are share in Adam’s guilt. So without their knowledge they are received into the grace of Christ that they might be separated to God. They must now believe and we will demand it as a church.
God works through means and we trust his promise For as many of you as were baptized into Christ have put on Christ (). Through the water we are made the priesthood of believers. We have put on Christ righteousness. We have put on his newness of life. This is the picture of the bronze basin a baptism to be sanctified by its waters to be members of Christ, so that we may more and more die unto sin and lead holy and unblamebale lives.
Your baptism always.
Know that through its waters we have passed onto dry ground and our forever clean and let us find its cleansing waters every Lord’s Day for the pilgrimage ahead. Amen!
