Introduction

An
In the Kingdom of God, the individual who follows God must be founded in God.
The individual that is rooted in God impacts the family.
My Grandmother was big on “home training.” She understood that your home instruction impacted all other societal entities.
The home and church are interconnected because God emphasizes home training in Deuteronomy 6.
The family rooted in God impacts the Church.
One of the foundations of the individual must be his understanding of the makeup of the Church and the mission of the church.
A misunderstanding of the makeup or nature of the church hurts the individual and halts the mission of the church.
To be a member of the Church, you must be in Christ.
If you are in Christ you are a member of the church.
Unity in the Church is predicated on knowing the Composition (nature) of the Church and the Cause (mission) of the church.
You cannot be united/unified if you are not apart, or possess understanding of that which you are apart.

Makeup of The Church

What is the church?

Church Definition

Matthew 6:13–18 NASB95
13 ‘And do not lead us into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Yours is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen.’ 14 “For if you forgive others for their transgressions, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. 15 “But if you do not forgive others, then your Father will not forgive your transgressions. 16 “Whenever you fast, do not put on a gloomy face as the hypocrites do, for they neglect their appearance so that they will be noticed by men when they are fasting. Truly I say to you, they have their reward in full. 17 “But you, when you fast, anoint your head and wash your face 18 so that your fasting will not be noticed by men, but by your Father who is in secret; and your Father who sees what is done in secret will reward you.
Matthew 6:13-
It is not a building!!
The classical greek definition is an assembly of any kind for any purpose.
Christ took a general definition and made it particular and purposeful.
Matthew 16:13–19 NASB95
13 Now when Jesus came into the district of Caesarea Philippi, He was asking His disciples, “Who do people say that the Son of Man is?” 14 And they said, “Some say John the Baptist; and others, Elijah; but still others, Jeremiah, or one of the prophets.” 15 He said to them, “But who do you say that I am?” 16 Simon Peter answered, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.” 17 And Jesus said to him, “Blessed are you, Simon Barjona, because flesh and blood did not reveal this to you, but My Father who is in heaven. 18 “I also say to you that you are Peter, and upon this rock I will build My church; and the gates of Hades will not overpower it. 19 “I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven; and whatever you bind on earth shall have been bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth shall have been loosed in heaven.”
Matthew 16:13-19
Christ defines the Church
contrary to Catholic belief the Church is founded on Christ alone.
“This Rock” has to do the Peter’s confession of who Christ is.
Don’t ignore the personal pronoun “my” Church in v 18
Peter gives us further definition regarding the makeup of the Church and clarifies misunderstanding of who the Rock is.
Example of Scripture interpreting Scripture
1 Peter 2:4 NASB95
4 And coming to Him as to a living stone which has been rejected by men, but is choice and precious in the sight of God,
1 Peter 2:4-
Christ is the Living stone, the Rock mentioned in
Peter describes the person and importance of this Stone.
Have you ever seen a living rock?
1 Peter 2:5 NASB95
5 you also, as living stones, are being built up as a spiritual house for a holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ.
1 Peter 2:5
He then moves to our relationship to this Stone
We also are alive
We are a Chip off the Old block Living Stones
“Being built up as a Spiritual house”
Christ is the Rock and we are a chip off the old block.
we are organisms in the organization. meaning we are interdependent.
Because a building block is of no use by itself.
Peter says we are built up as a “spiritual house”
Single stones come together to erect a spiritual house.
Which brings about the issue of Church membership
There is the Universal Church (Invisible Church, The Church at Rest) and the Local Church (Visible, Militant Church)
You cant be apart of one and not the other! As the Bible communicates.
The Universal Church is defined as the invisible body of all believers.
You become a member of the Universal Church when you accept Christ as Lord and Savior.
The Universal Church consists of the Saints who have died and the saints who are present on earth.
The Local Church is the physical
He took the generic meaning of church “people who gather for any purpose” and gave it a particular meaning.
Definition of Church is this: A people called by God, gathered around His Son, filled with The Spirit, and sent to proclaim His name among the Nations.
Regularly meeting
Fellowship (edification) () ()
Evangelism (1 Cor 11:26)
Worship (John 4:24)

Mission of the Church

1 Peter 2:5 NASB95
5 you also, as living stones, are being built up as a spiritual house for a holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ.
1 Peter 2:5
What do we as members of the Church do?
“Holy Priesthood”- set aside for His service
The priest were the ones who were to mediate between God and humanity.
We are the militant Church on the move for God for the purpose of reconciling men unto God

Antithesis

The church has buildings but little boldness.

The church has numbers but little nerve.

The church has comfort but little courage.

The church has status but little spirit.

The church has prestige but little power.1

This is antithetical to the call of the Church because we are a priesthood unto God. Where is your service unto God?
1 Peter 2:6–8 NASB95
6 For this is contained in Scripture: Behold, I lay in Zion a choice stone, a precious corner stone, And he who believes in Him will not be disappointed.” 7 This precious value, then, is for you who believe; but for those who disbelieve, The stone which the builders rejected, This became the very corner stone, 8 and, “A stone of stumbling and a rock of offense”; for they stumble because they are disobedient to the word, and to this doom they were also appointed.
1 Peter 2:6 NASB95
6 For this is contained in Scripture: Behold, I lay in Zion a choice stone, a precious corner stone, And he who believes in Him will not be disappointed.”
1 Peter 2:6-
1 Peter 2:6
Remember is that Christ said “upon this rock I will build my Church”
The religious men of His time rejected the foundation of God’s plan. They were trying to establish a Kingdom according to their plans.
The World is trying to build without Christ
Jesus is the Engineer, Architect, and General Contractor of this project called the Church.
“Cornerstone”- what we believe in
Any Christian Church is built on Christ
The Cornerstone of a building gave Symmetry, strength and significance.
1 Peter 2:9 NASB95
9 But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for God’s own possession, so that you may proclaim the excellencies of Him who has called you out of darkness into His marvelous light;
1 Peter 2:9
“Chosen Race” -selected Family
“royal Priesthood”- Priests belonging to God Kingdom
“Holy Nation, a people for God’s own possession”- The same ethnic group sharing the same culture. Your DNA has been changed. No longer Sinner but Saint
All of theses statements communicate the intimacy and oneness of the Church
We are
Built together
Bound together
This is a committment
Can you be a believer and not be a part of the Church?
I believe in Jesus but I don’t go to Church.
You cant say yes to Jesus but no to the Church
A saved man will love what Jesus loved. Jesus loved the Church so much that He gave Himself up for Her.
Don’t confuse the Building with the Church
Just because you attend service or come to the building doesn’t mean you are part of the Church.
Encyclopedia of 7700 Illustrations 4225 The “Tator” Family

4225 The “Tator” Family

The “Tator” family has a reputation for joining as many churches as possible. The following description will help you to recognize them if they start attending your church.

Dick Tator—

He’s the daddy, self-appointed leader of the church, heads all committees, feels very important. He just dictates, never works.

Emmy Tator—

She’s the mother, never has any thoughts of her own. She just imitates. always seconds someone else’s motion. She is active in all phases of church life, imitating her closest friends.

Hezy Tator—

He’s the oldest son, and goes to college. When he’s asked to do something, he just hesitates. He feels he isn’t qualified for any job. Also, he is too busy with other things to work for the Lord.

Carmen Tator—

Carmen is the daughter. She sits in the back row of Sunday school, church and training time, commenting on everything and everybody.

Speck Tator—

He’s in high school. When asked to participate in programs or socials, Speck says no. He says he just spectates.

Agi Tator—

This is the oldest member of the Tator family. She’s been a Christian for forty years, she claims. She doesn’t believe that a church should make any changes, like adding or subtracting a hymn from the morning service. She agitates people; keeps things stirred up.

Sweet Tator—

This is the only cordial and cooperative member of the Tator family. She is an ideal church member, for she takes part in and supports the whole church program, is generous with time and talents, and never dictates, hesitates, commentates or agitates.

Conclusion

The church can be defined as God calling nothing people to Himself, gathered them around his Son, filled him with His Spirit, and sent them out to proclaim his name among the nations.
The Church is to:
Glorify God
Fellowship with one another
Evangelize the World
Sam’ s Club: I went to Sam’s Club to buy some beach chairs. I pick up three beach chairs and head to the register. I was using my cousin’s card because she had the membership. I gave the clerk my cousin’s card and the clerk exclaimed that the card was expired. I asked was there anything she could do and she said no. Another roaming employee overheard my transaction and used his card to allow me to purchase my items. At Sam’s Club you can go in the store, peruse the merchandise, sit on the sofas, click the computers and even buy a hotdog, but you can not buy any other items in their store unless you have a Sam’s Club Membership.
Like the Church you can come every week
Eat at the Potlucks
Enjoy the fellowship
Appreciate the Air conditioning
But this will all come to no end unless you are a member of the Church.
You can’t use your cousin’s membership
With all your good intentions or works you can’t become a member.
Unless someone steps in on your behalf you can’t become a member of the Church
Jesus overhead your situation
He steps in and gives you membership status
