INTRODUCTION:
The “I Need Weed” Lady. I was so flabbergasted that I lied unintentionally. I did not, in my heart, wish her luck in getting weed.
Tongue — who can bridle it
Like riding a horse that doesn’t like you
when you want to stop, it keeps galloping on
when you want it to go, it does nothing
SINFUL SPEECH IN TWO DIRECTIONS:
Sinful speech (Father & Children) — “where there are many words..”
1. SAYING THE WRONG THING
Sinful speech (Father & Children) — “where there are many words..”
Sinful silence (Father & Son) — “like apples in silver…”
2. SAYING NOTHING
We’ve all said stupid things. Probably pretty aware of that. But I wonder how often we think about our speech sins of omission. How often we’ve all failed to say good things, helpful things, important things in the right moment and time.

Just about every Sunday, Victor prays — forgive us for things we did, for things we did not do, for things we did not do with the right heart…
There are sins of commission & sins of omission
And that is an idea I want you to key in on. Godly speech isn’t merely the absence of bad words, hurtful words, etc… Truly godly speech also involves the presence of good timely words.
And like I said a moment ago — the tongue is like an untamed horse — it goes when you don’t go — it doesn’t go when you want it to…
WHEN SILENCE IS SIN
WHEN SILENCE IS SIN
Gratitude —
Praise —
Encourage one another —
Evangelism —
Confess to one another —
Teach & admonish one another —
BUT THERE’S HOPE!
BUT THERE’S HOPE!

Behold, a king will reign in righteousness, and princes will rule in justice.  2  Each will be like a hiding place from the wind, a shelter from the storm, like streams of water in a dry place, like the shade of a great rock in a weary land.  3  Then the eyes of those who see will not be closed, and the ears of those who hear will give attention.  4  The heart of the hasty will understand and know, and the tongue of the stammerers will hasten to speak distinctly.
So on to our text — which shows the most unruly part of us — being tamed by the Spirit of God
Acts 2:1–8 ESV
When the day of Pentecost arrived, they were all together in one place. And suddenly there came from heaven a sound like a mighty rushing wind, and it filled the entire house where they were sitting. And divided tongues as of fire appeared to them and rested on each one of them. And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit gave them utterance. Now there were dwelling in Jerusalem Jews, devout men from every nation under heaven. And at this sound the multitude came together, and they were bewildered, because each one was hearing them speak in his own language. And they were amazed and astonished, saying, “Are not all these who are speaking Galileans? And how is it that we hear, each of us in his own native language?

I. THE POWER OF THE SPIRIT
He tames the untamable
James 3:2 ESV
For we all stumble in many ways. And if anyone does not stumble in what he says, he is a perfect man, able also to bridle his whole body.
James 3:2
James 3:7–8 ESV
For every kind of beast and bird, of reptile and sea creature, can be tamed and has been tamed by mankind, but no human being can tame the tongue. It is a restless evil, full of deadly poison.
“…if anyone does not stumble in what he says, he is a perfect man, able also to bridle his whole body.
“…every kind of beast and bird, of reptile and sea creature, can be tamed and has been tamed by mankind,  8  but no human being can tame the tongue…”
II. THE PERSONALITY OF THE SPIRIT
He talks… a lot!
Are you talkative or not?
Are you talkative or not?
The Holy Spirit is (see , (he will teach you).
— which is good help for introverts and extroverts
The Spirit and boldness (,,, , . 14:3, 18:26, 19:8, 26:26, Ph 1:14, , )
The Holy Spirit is involved in 4 kinds of speech crucial to the Christian…
Speaks on both ends of the bible
Speaks on both ends of prayer
Speaks on both ends of encouragement
Speaks on both ends of evangelism
III. THE PROBLEM
III. THE PROBLEM SOLVED
The power of the spirit to control what cannot be controlled. That comes from his work on our hearts.
Jesus said in
Matthew 12:34–37 ESV
You brood of vipers! How can you speak good, when you are evil? For out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks. The good person out of his good treasure brings forth good, and the evil person out of his evil treasure brings forth evil. I tell you, on the day of judgment people will give account for every careless word they speak, for by your words you will be justified, and by your words you will be condemned.”
You brood of vipers! How can you speak good, when you are evil? For out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks.  35  The good person out of his good treasure brings forth good, and the evil person out of his evil treasure brings forth evil.

And then in — “Worship me w/ their lips but their hearts are far from me.”
Matthew 15:8 ESV
“ ‘This people honors me with their lips, but their heart is far from me;
Boasting
Boasting
Lying
And again — the silence when we ought to speak
CONCLUSION:
The Spirit & Proclamation ()
Moses overwhelmed (11-15)
Moses & 70 elders
17 - take some of the Spirit that is on you and put it on them
Numbers 11:25–30 ESV
Then the Lord came down in the cloud and spoke to him, and took some of the Spirit that was on him and put it on the seventy elders. And as soon as the Spirit rested on them, they prophesied. But they did not continue doing it. Now two men remained in the camp, one named Eldad, and the other named Medad, and the Spirit rested on them. They were among those registered, but they had not gone out to the tent, and so they prophesied in the camp. And a young man ran and told Moses, “Eldad and Medad are prophesying in the camp.” And Joshua the son of Nun, the assistant of Moses from his youth, said, “My lord Moses, stop them.” But Moses said to him, “Are you jealous for my sake? Would that all the Lord’s people were prophets, that the Lord would put his Spirit on them!” And Moses and the elders of Israel returned to the camp.

Similarities:
Fruitfulness
God puts his spirit on people
They prophesy (speak in a godly way)
Differences:
Moses vs. Christ
Limited prophesying vs unlimited
Limited people vs unlimited
26  Now two men remained in the camp, one named Eldad, and the other named Medad, and the Spirit rested on them. They were among those registered, but they had not gone out to the tent, and so they prophesied in the camp.  27  And a young man ran and told Moses, “Eldad and Medad are prophesying in the camp.”  28  And Joshua the son of Nun, the assistant of Moses from his youth, said, “My lord Moses, stop them.”  29  But Moses said to him, “Are you jealous for my sake? Would that all the LORD's people were prophets, that the LORD would put his Spirit on them!”
APPLICATION:
— in Pentecost… they’re speaking in different languages (marriage, generations, etc…) — but they’re hearing each other.
— our world can be different (race, etc… brothers from other countries with whom I have more in common than actual relatives) The tongue divides… All summed up in the Tower of Babel
More to ponder:
How different would your life be if your tongue was freed up to say good things, precious things, etc… in a timely way?
How would your life be different if the love of God controlled your tongue?
The bible often connects deep humiliation with speech… (, Ez 16:63)
When we run against the rocks of our own wretchedness, we should remember two basic principles…
There is no condemnation for those in Christ JesusThe Holy Spirit is going to apply this new reality in the nooks and crannies of my personality, my character — to make a practical difference in my life
How does the Holy Spirit do this with our speech?
Behold, a king will reign in righteousness, and princes will rule in justice.  2  Each will be like a hiding place from the wind, a shelter from the storm, like streams of water in a dry place, like the shade of a great rock in a weary land.  3  Then the eyes of those who see will not be closed, and the ears of those who hear will give attention.  4  The heart of the hasty will understand and know, and the tongue of the stammerers will hasten to speak distinctly.
