When they crossed over

A quick look back before we look forward.
Jesus walked on water (Mk6:45-52)
Jesus see’s the apostles straining at the oars of life and takes a walk out to them, but not to them until they cry out to Him. Immediately He brings calm to the storm and they get to the other side, just as Jesus had promised.
Jesus fed the 5000 (Mk6:33-44)
In time Jesus wanted to get away to a secluded place with his disciples, Jesus see’s the crowd and has compassion for them and meets the physical need and a lesson to the disciples (though in our story today you will see they did not learn from it)
Sinful History shown (Mk6:14-32)
Reflecting back on history of a sinful man who was haunted by his sinful choices. We learned we no longer have to be a prisoner to our past and we have to step out of the past through repentance and embrace what the Lord has done and will continue to do in our lives.
Limited commission/mission (MK6:7-13)
Their limited commission with direction on where to go, what to do, instructions on what they were going to need in the future. We looked at trying to find the right balance in ministering before knocking the dust off our sandals and moving on.
Unwelcome homecoming (Mk6:1-6)
It had been a year or so and Jesus was heading home again, this time hopefully to a better reception, but that was not the case. It ended up with the people in his hometown wanting to kill Him and he left there not to return again. Jesus wondered at the peoples unbelief. But as we notice in the rest of the stories there is some unbelief too, see if you see the tread.
What was the unbelief in the limited commission (Mk6:7-13)?
What is the unbelief in the sinful history (Mk6:14-32)?
What is the unbelief in the feeding of 5000 (Mk6:33-44)?
What is the unbelief in the Walking on water (Mk6:45-52)?
So we have seen some miracles performed after His homecoming and today we are looking at the healings in Gennesaret and they will clearly show:
The success of Jesus healing ministry
The purpose of Jesus healing ministry
The significance of the healing ministry
We will interweave the healing ministry of Peter and Paul too as we go. So now, let’s look at the passage together and then will get into the healing ministry.
Mk6:
Mark 6:53–54 NASB95
53 When they had crossed over they came to land at Gennesaret, and moored to the shore. 54 When they got out of the boat, immediately the people recognized Him,
Mark 6:55–56 NASB95
55 and ran about that whole country and began to carry here and there on their pallets those who were sick, to the place they heard He was. 56 Wherever He entered villages, or cities, or countryside, they were laying the sick in the market places, and imploring Him that they might just touch the fringe of His cloak; and as many as touched it were being cured.
What do you see, what do you notice, what sticks out to you?

The Setting

`Do you remember the reception that the people had in Gennesaret that last time Jesus was there (Mk5:1-20)? Today we have a different reception, but beyond that, let’s look at a little about this area too.
Mark 5:15 NASB95
15 They came to Jesus and observed the man who had been demon-possessed sitting down, clothed and in his right mind, the very man who had had the “legion”; and they became frightened.
Mk5:15
Mark 5:16–17 NASB95
16 Those who had seen it described to them how it had happened to the demon-possessed man, and all about the swine. 17 And they began to implore Him to leave their region.
Before they wanted Him to go, what is the reception now (MK6:54-56)?
Now, we need to notice something else, where were the Apostles sent to go to when they got on the boat (MK6:45)?
What happened in the interim on why they did not reach their destination (Mk6:47-48)
They were heading to Bethsaida (6:45); but ended up in Gennesaret (6:53) after passing through a storm. But why there? Because they did not learn from the miracle of the loaves (6:52). They needed another lesson in faith.
(Insert picture sea of Galilee - already saved on computer)
Gennesaret is a little south of Capernaum, Jesus ministry hub, and it is a densely populated area on the northwest side of the Sea of Galilee. Beyond being densely populated it had a fertile plain and included the city of Taricheae. Josephus describes it as a being a beautiful area, producing abundant varieties of fruit and trees.
So if it be because of the lesson they needed to learn or the wind, Again, Jesus makes the most of every situation.
Setting for other healing ministries
Peter in Jerusalem (Act5:14-16)
Peter during the early days of the church, when it was a local church still.
Acts 5:14–15 NASB95
14 And all the more believers in the Lord, multitudes of men and women, were constantly added to their number, 15 to such an extent that they even carried the sick out into the streets and laid them on cots and pallets, so that when Peter came by at least his shadow might fall on any one of them.
Acts 5:16 NASB95
16 Also the people from the cities in the vicinity of Jerusalem were coming together, bringing people who were sick or afflicted with unclean spirits, and they were all being healed.
Paul in Ephesus (Act19:11-12)
Paul in Ephesus (Act19:11-12)
Paul in his extended stay in Ephesus during the 3rd missionary trip
Acts 19:11–12 NASB95
11 God was performing extraordinary miracles by the hands of Paul, 12 so that handkerchiefs or aprons were even carried from his body to the sick, and the diseases left them and the evil spirits went out.
So in the populated areas, deserted areas, no matter the setting you can see the work of God in the miracles of Jesus, Peter and Paul. Each had success.

Success of the healings

Faith comes by hearing, hearing the words of Christ, right? Well in the healing ministries they started here with hearing, believing, receiving. It was all inclusive, watch as we develop on this.
Gennesaret
When people heard Jesus was there, they came and saw (Mk6:54-56)
What else did they do (Mk6:54-56)?
They ran about the whole country
They brought people who were sick
They laid them in the marketplaces, or anywhere else
They believed that if they could just touch the fringe of His cloak the would be healed.
Where did this happen (Mk5:56)?
Villages, cities or countryside, wherever Jesus was they brought Him
Who was healed (Mk5:56)?
All who touched Him were being healed (cured)
Success of healing in other places
Peter in Jerusalem (Act5:14-16)
Similar to Gennesaret the brought the sick out into the streets (marketplaces) on beds, couches (pallets)
Not just people in Jerusalem but fro the surrounding ares (entire country).
And they were all healed.
Paul in Ephesus (Act19:11-12)
God worked miracles by hands of Paul (with Jesus just touching His cloak)
Even handkerchiefs brought from his body (Paul’s) the sick would be healed.
You can see it implied that all were healed
If there were healing ministries that had the power that Jesus, Peter and Paul had, with the success they had, we would see it, hear about it, everyday wouldn’t we? But there is reasons behind the healings and lets look at that too.

Significance of the healings

God does not do things without purpose. God always had a purpose, a plan, a scheme, with foreknowledge these healing happen with a purpose, both had their significance.

In Gennesaret
In Gennesaret
The purpose of the healings was to confirm, prove, Jesus claim (JN5:36; Jn10:25; Jn10:37-38)
The witnesses to the signs had faith sparked and made a connection (Jn3:2; Jn9:30-33)
Oh, wait, Jesus did not perform miracles at one time due to lack of faith (Mt13:58)

John 5:36 NASB95
36 “But the testimony which I have is greater than the testimony of John; for the works which the Father has given Me to accomplish—the very works that I do—testify about Me, that the Father has sent Me.
Jn
The works, the miracles testify who Jesus is! And if that is not enough:
John 10:25 NASB95
25 Jesus answered them, “I told you, and you do not believe; the works that I do in My Father’s name, these testify of Me.
and then
John 10:37–38 NASB95
37 “If I do not do the works of My Father, do not believe Me; 38 but if I do them, though you do not believe Me, believe the works, so that you may know and understand that the Father is in Me, and I in the Father.”
The purpose of the healings was to confirm, prove, Jesus claim (JN5:36; Jn10:25; Jn10:37-38)
The witnesses to the signs had faith sparked and made a connection (Jn3:2; Jn9:30-33)
Even some religious leaders had a new kind of faith that was sparked
John 3:2 NASB95
2 this man came to Jesus by night and said to Him, “Rabbi, we know that You have come from God as a teacher; for no one can do these signs that You do unless God is with him.”
Faith that is sparked and bold!
John 9:30–31 NASB95
30 The man answered and said to them, “Well, here is an amazing thing, that you do not know where He is from, and yet He opened my eyes. 31 “We know that God does not hear sinners; but if anyone is God-fearing and does His will, He hears him.
John 9:32–33 NASB95
32 “Since the beginning of time it has never been heard that anyone opened the eyes of a person born blind. 33 “If this man were not from God, He could do nothing.”
Matthew 13:58 NASB95
58 And He did not do many miracles there because of their unbelief.
this is a parallel to a passage we have looked at (Mk6:5; just referenced)

In other places, other occasions
The purpose of the apostolic miracles was to confirm their message was true (Mk16:17-20)

In other places, other occasions

Mark 16:17–18 NASB95
17 “These signs will accompany those who have believed: in My name they will cast out demons, they will speak with new tongues; 18 they will pick up serpents, and if they drink any deadly poison, it will not hurt them; they will lay hands on the sick, and they will recover.”
Mark 16:19 NASB95
19 So then, when the Lord Jesus had spoken to them, He was received up into heaven and sat down at the right hand of God.
Mark 16:19 NASB95
19 So then, when the Lord Jesus had spoken to them, He was received up into heaven and sat down at the right hand of God.
Mark 16:19–20 NASB95
19 So then, when the Lord Jesus had spoken to them, He was received up into heaven and sat down at the right hand of God. 20 And they went out and preached everywhere, while the Lord worked with them, and confirmed the word by the signs that followed. And they promptly reported all these instructions to Peter and his companions. And after that, Jesus Himself sent out through them from east to west the sacred and imperishable proclamation of eternal salvation.
Mark 6:20 NASB95
20 for Herod was afraid of John, knowing that he was a righteous and holy man, and he kept him safe. And when he heard him, he was very perplexed; but he used to enjoy listening to him.
Mark 16:20 NASB95
20 And they went out and preached everywhere, while the Lord worked with them, and confirmed the word by the signs that followed. And they promptly reported all these instructions to Peter and his companions. And after that, Jesus Himself sent out through them from east to west the sacred and imperishable proclamation of eternal salvation.
Mk16:
The purpose of the apostolic miracles was to confirm their message was true (Mk16:17-20)
They bore witness to His Word and the gifts of the Holy Spirit (Heb2:3-4)
Hebrews 2:3–4 NASB95
3 how will we escape if we neglect so great a salvation? After it was at the first spoken through the Lord, it was confirmed to us by those who heard, 4 God also testifying with them, both by signs and wonders and by various miracles and by gifts of the Holy Spirit according to His own will.
So, with Jesus to confirm who He was, the Son of God, the long awaited Messiah. And with the Apostolic ministry miracles to confirm the word they spoke was true regarding the messiah. It confirmed the message and the messenger.
So, just thus far, what can you say about application for today from these examples of healing ministry?
Some closing thoughts and bringing this into today.
Today there are what people claim are healing ministries that draw huge crowds and they claim God is working through them.
But not everyone who hears, comes, touches, is touched is healed are they?
In the Biblical examples “all” were healed.
The purpose of the miracles them were to confirm they were servants of God (Jesus the Son of God) the apostles the messengers of God and from God. There was no doubt left how it was done.
Jesus said it was by the Father
Paul, Peter said it was by the name of (authority) of Jesus
Healing ministries were for a purpose and a time. They confirmed the message, the messenger were from God. When the Word was completed they were no longer needed for everything needed was already revealed and confirmed.
1 Corinthians 13:8–9 NASB95
8 Love never fails; but if there are gifts of prophecy, they will be done away; if there are tongues, they will cease; if there is knowledge, it will be done away. 9 For we know in part and we prophesy in part;
1 Corinthians 13:10 NASB95
10 but when the perfect comes, the partial will be done away.
God has not changed His ability, His character but has changed the method. Today it is by faith not signs that bring about faith. God is still the God of miracles and healing is available to all, for by His stripes we are healed. Miracles can still be done, they just are not bible miracles done with a purpose.
There are too many people, too many ministries that are leading people away from biblical truth. So may we always be simply Christians studying God’s Word together and may we believe what the Bible says.
Oh, wait, Jesus did not perform miracles at one time due to lack of faith (Mt13:58)
