16 Take heed to yourself and to the doctrine. Continue in them, for in doing this you will save both yourself and those who hear you.
3 If anyone teaches otherwise and does not consent to wholesome words, even the words of our Lord Jesus Christ, and to the doctrine which accords with godliness,
10 not pilfering, but showing all good fidelity, that they may adorn the doctrine of God our Savior in all things.

14 These things I write to you, though I hope to come to you shortly; 15 but if I am delayed, I write so that you may know how you ought to conduct yourself in the house of God, which is the church of the living God, the pillar and ground of the truth.

1. “Sound Doctrine” is used 4 times.
1. “Sound Doctrine” is used 4 times.
The fact that the phrase “Sound doctrine” is repeated 4 times should tell us that it is important.
Twice to Timothy and twice to Titus.
Sound doctrine is rightly divided doctrine!
15 Be diligent to present yourself approved to God, a worker who does not need to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.
Sound doctrine is obtained by having our senses exercised to discern both good and evil.
12 For though by this time you ought to be teachers, you need someone to teach you again the first principles of the oracles of God; and you have come to need milk and not solid food. 13 For everyone who partakes only of milk is unskilled in the word of righteousness, for he is a babe. 14 But solid food belongs to those who are of full age, that is, those who by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern both good and evil.
Those that cannot teach them first principles or sound doctrine.
Sound doctrine belongs to those who are of full age, that is, those who by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern both good and evil.

A. What is Paul telling Timothy about “sound doctrine” in ?
If we figure out what he is instructing Timothy here it will help us understand how we need to conduct ourselves in the Church.
8 But we know that the law is good if one uses it lawfully, 9 knowing this: that the law is not made for a righteous person, but for the lawless and insubordinate, for the ungodly and for sinners, for the unholy and profane, for murderers of fathers and murderers of mothers, for manslayers, 10 for fornicators, for sodomites, for kidnappers, for liars, for perjurers, and if there is any other thing that is contrary to sound doctrine, 11 according to the glorious gospel of the blessed God which was committed to my trust.
1. In order for the law to be “good” God’s Word must be used lawfully or properly.
1. In order for the law to be “good” God’s Word must be used lawfully or properly.
8 But we know that the law is good if one uses it lawfully,
When God’s word is used lawfully or properly it produces “sound doctrine”.
If the speed limit is 65 mph on the highway how does one lawfully or properly drive?
By going 65 mph
This would be a sound usage of the speed limit law.
2. The law was not made for a righteous person, but for the lawless and insubordinate.
2. The law was not made for a righteous person, but for the lawless and insubordinate.
1 Timothy 1:9
9 knowing this: that the law is not made for a righteous person, but for the lawless and insubordinate, for the ungodly and for sinners, for the unholy and profane, for murderers of fathers and murderers of mothers, for manslayers,
9 knowing this: that the law is not made for a righteous person, but for the lawless and insubordinate, for the ungodly and for sinners, for the unholy and profane, for murderers of fathers and murderers of mothers, for manslayers, 10 for fornicators, for sodomites, for kidnappers, for liars, for perjurers, and if there is any other thing that is contrary to sound doctrine,
This is why we must have and teach “sound doctrine”.
“Sound doctrine” is the only thing that will help the people that have strayed to come back to sincere faith.
5 Now the purpose of the commandment is love from a pure heart, from a good conscience, and from sincere faith, 6 from which some, having strayed, have turned aside to idle talk,
1 Timothy 1:5-
There are too many people that desire to be teachers that do not understand “sound doctrine”.
7 desiring to be teachers of the law, understanding neither what they say nor the things which they affirm.
1 Timothy 17
1 My brethren, let not many of you become teachers, knowing that we shall receive a stricter judgment.
3. There are things that are taught that are contrary to “sound doctrine”.
3. There are things that are taught that are contrary to “sound doctrine”.
10 for fornicators, for sodomites, for kidnappers, for liars, for perjurers, and if there is any other thing that is contrary to sound doctrine,
We need to be careful about everything that we are taught and are teaching.
9 Whoever transgresses and does not abide in the doctrine of Christ does not have God. He who abides in the doctrine of Christ has both the Father and the Son. 10 If anyone comes to you and does not bring this doctrine, do not receive him into your house nor greet him; 11 for he who greets him shares in his evil deeds.

B. What is Paul telling Timothy about “sound doctrine” in ?
If we figure out what he is instructing Timothy here it will help us understand how we need to conduct ourselves in the Church.
1 I charge you therefore before God and the Lord Jesus Christ, who will judge the living and the dead at His appearing and His kingdom: 2 Preach the word! Be ready in season and out of season. Convince, rebuke, exhort, with all longsuffering and teaching. 3 For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine, but according to their own desires, because they have itching ears, they will heap up for themselves teachers; 4 and they will turn their ears away from the truth, and be turned aside to fables. 5 But you be watchful in all things, endure afflictions, do the work of an evangelist, fulfill your ministry.
1. We will be judged according to God’s Word.
1. We will be judged according to God’s Word.

2 Timothy 4:1-
He told them they would be judged by Christ and then told them that the time would come when they would not endure what he taught (sound doctrine).
48 He who rejects Me, and does not receive My words, has that which judges him—the word that I have spoken will judge him in the last day. 49 For I have not spoken on My own authority; but the Father who sent Me gave Me a command, what I should say and what I should speak. 50 And I know that His command is everlasting life. Therefore, whatever I speak, just as the Father has told Me, so I speak.”
John 12.48
If we do not know and practice “sound doctrine” how will we make it to heaven because we will be judged by Jesus’ Words which are “sound doctrine”?
2. We are to be ready to preach “sound doctrine”.
2. We are to be ready to preach “sound doctrine”.
2 Preach the word! Be ready in season and out of season. Convince, rebuke, exhort, with all longsuffering and teaching. 3 For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine, but according to their own desires, because they have itching ears, they will heap up for themselves teachers;
2 Preach the word! Be ready in season and out of season. Convince, rebuke, exhort, with all longsuffering and teaching.
We need to be ready to convince, rebuke and exhort with “sound doctrine” because they will not endure it.
2 Timothy 4
15 But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts, and always be ready to give a defense to everyone who asks you a reason for the hope that is in you, with meekness and fear;
A. Do you remember why Jonah was sent to Nineveh?
A. Do you remember why Jonah was sent to Nineveh?
Jon 1.
1 Now the word of the Lord came to Jonah the son of Amittai, saying, 2 “Arise, go to Nineveh, that great city, and cry out against it; for their wickedness has come up before Me.”
They would not endure “sound doctrine” so God sent them Jonah to preach to them and give them the opportunity to repent.
4 But the Lord sent out a great wind on the sea, and there was a mighty tempest on the sea, so that the ship was about to be broken up. 5 Then the mariners were afraid; and every man cried out to his god, and threw the cargo that was in the ship into the sea, to lighten the load. But Jonah had gone down into the lowest parts of the ship, had lain down, and was fast asleep. 6 So the captain came to him, and said to him, “What do you mean, sleeper? Arise, call on your God; perhaps your God will consider us, so that we may not perish.” 7 And they said to one another, “Come, let us cast lots, that we may know for whose cause this trouble has come upon us.” So they cast lots, and the lot fell on Jonah. 8 Then they said to him, “Please tell us! For whose cause is this trouble upon us? What is your occupation? And where do you come from? What is your country? And of what people are you?” 9 So he said to them, “I am a Hebrew; and I fear the Lord, the God of heaven, who made the sea and the dry land.”
Jon 3.4-
Jon 1.4-
Jonah was to proclaim “sound doctrine” because it was the only thing that would save Nineveh.
4 And Jonah began to enter the city on the first day’s walk. Then he cried out and said, “Yet forty days, and Nineveh shall be overthrown!” 5 So the people of Nineveh believed God, proclaimed a fast, and put on sackcloth, from the greatest to the least of them. 6 Then word came to the king of Nineveh; and he arose from his throne and laid aside his robe, covered himself with sackcloth and sat in ashes. 7 And he caused it to be proclaimed and published throughout Nineveh by the decree of the king and his nobles, saying, Let neither man nor beast, herd nor flock, taste anything; do not let them eat, or drink water. 8 But let man and beast be covered with sackcloth, and cry mightily to God; yes, let every one turn from his evil way and from the violence that is in his hands. 9 Who can tell if God will turn and relent, and turn away from His fierce anger, so that we may not perish?
1 Now the word of the Lord came to Jonah the second time, saying, 2 “Arise, go to Nineveh, that great city, and preach to it the message that I tell you.”
Jon 3
The “sound doctrine” Jonah preached to them was...
4 And Jonah began to enter the city on the first day’s walk. Then he cried out and said, “Yet forty days, and Nineveh shall be overthrown!”
Because of this message Nineveh repented.
5 So the people of Nineveh believed God, proclaimed a fast, and put on sackcloth, from the greatest to the least of them.
Jon 3:
Nineveh produced the fruit of repentance because of sound doctrine.
Matt. 3:
7 But when he saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees coming to his baptism, he said to them, “Brood of vipers! Who warned you to flee from the wrath to come? 8 Therefore bear fruits worthy of repentance,
They turned from their evil way so they would not perish.
10 Then God saw their works, that they turned from their evil way; and God relented from the disaster that He had said He would bring upon them, and He did not do it.
3 I tell you, no; but unless you repent you will all likewise perish.
10 Then God saw their works, that they turned from their evil way; and God relented from the disaster that He had said He would bring upon them, and He did not do it.
3 I tell you, no; but unless you repent you will all likewise perish.
Conclusion:
Conclusion:
We learned a lot about doctrine today and the importance Paul placed on teaching Timothy about doctrine.
1 Timothy 3
14 These things I write to you, though I hope to come to you shortly; 15 but if I am delayed, I write so that you may know how you ought to conduct yourself in the house of God, which is the church of the living God, the pillar and ground of the truth.
Next week we will look at the usage of “sound doctrine as Paul taught Titus.
Remember there are 4 usages of “sound doctrine” in 1st & 2nd Timothy and Titus
The world says doctrine does not matter.
God says doctrine matters and you had better have it right.
What do you say?
