7. “To Doctrine” is used 1 time in the NKJV.

The fact that the phrase “Sound doctrine” is repeated 4 times should tell us that it is important.

Sound doctrine is rightly divided doctrine!
Sound doctrine is obtained by having our senses exercised to discern both good and evil.
Those that cannot teach them first principles or sound doctrine.
Sound doctrine belongs to those who are of full age, that is, those who by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern both good and evil.
A. What is Paul telling Timothy about “sound doctrine” in ?
If we figure out what he is instructing Timothy here it will help us understand how we need to conduct ourselves in the Church.

In order for the law to be “good” God’s Word must be used lawfully or properly.
When God’s word is used lawfully or properly it produces “sound doctrine”.
If the speed limit is 65 mph on the highway how does one lawfully or properly drive?
By going 65 mph
This would be a sound usage of the speed limit law.
2. The law was not made for a righteous person, but for the lawless and insubordinate.
1 Timothy 1:9
This is why we must have and teach “sound doctrine”.
“Sound doctrine” is the only thing that will help the people that have strayed to come back to sincere faith.
1 Timothy 1:5-
There are too many people that desire to be teachers that do not understand “sound doctrine”.
1 Timothy 17

There are things that are taught that are contrary to “sound doctrine”.
We need to be careful about everything that we are taught and are teaching.

B. What is Paul telling Timothy about “sound doctrine” in ?
If we figure out what he is instructing Timothy here it will help us understand how we need to conduct ourselves in the Church.
1.
We will be judged according to God’s Word.
2 Timothy 4:1-
He told them they would be judged by Christ and then told them that the time would come when they would not endure what he taught (sound doctrine).
John 12.48
If we do not know and practice “sound doctrine” how will we make it to heaven because we will be judged by Jesus’ Words which are “sound doctrine”?
2. We are to be ready to preach “sound doctrine”.
We need to be ready to convince, rebuke and exhort with “sound doctrine” because they will not endure it.
2 Timothy 4
A. Do you remember why Jonah was sent to Nineveh?
Jon 1.
They would not endure “sound doctrine” so God sent them Jonah to preach to them and give them the opportunity to repent.
Jon 3.4-
Jon 1.4-
Jonah was to proclaim “sound doctrine” because it was the only thing that would save Nineveh.
Jon 3
The “sound doctrine” Jonah preached to them was...
Because of this message Nineveh repented.
Jon 3:
Nineveh produced the fruit of repentance because of sound doctrine.

They turned from their evil way so they would not perish.
Conclusion:
We learned a lot about doctrine today and the importance Paul placed on teaching Timothy about doctrine.
