The Promises of God
God’s promise to fight for us
13 Moses answered the people, “Do not be afraid. Stand firm and you will see the deliverance the Lord will bring you today. The Egyptians you see today you will never see again. 14 The Lord will fight for you; you need only to be still.”
God’s promise of strength
29 He gives strength to the weary and increases the power of the weak. 30 Even youths grow tired and weary, and young men stumble and fall; 31 but those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint.
God’s promise of protection
1 But now, this is what the Lord says— he who created you, Jacob, he who formed you, Israel: “Do not fear, for I have redeemed you; I have summoned you by name; you are mine. 2 When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and when you pass through the rivers, they will not sweep over you. When you walk through the fire, you will not be burned; the flames will not set you ablaze.
God’s promise of revival
14 if my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and I will forgive their sin and will heal their land.

The promise of salvation
16 For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.

10 Bring the whole tithe into the storehouse, that there may be food in my house. Test me in this,” says the Lord Almighty, “and see if I will not throw open the floodgates of heaven and pour out so much blessing that there will not be room enough to store it.

5 Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; 6 in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.
The promise of healing
14 Is anyone among you sick? Let them call the elders of the church to pray over them and anoint them with oil in the name of the Lord. 15 And the prayer offered in faith will make the sick person well; the Lord will raise them up. If they have sinned, they will be forgiven.
Tonight we come to the 5th Commandment
12 “Honor your father and your mother, so that you may live long in the land the Lord your God is giving you.
The first four deal with our relationship with God and the next six deal with our relationship with others. Tonight we are dealing with the family relationship. It not only deals with the command to “honor” our fathers and mothers, but it teaches us the principle of honor and God’s blessing when we “honor.”
The fifth commandment is reflected in the principles of almost every culture in all places at all times. It is a universally recognized principle that children should honor and respect their parents.
The parent gave the child life; therefore the child owes everything he has to the parent. This is naturally recognized. It is built into the fabric of life. Ancient Greece, the Orient, Africa, South America – wherever you go children are expected to honor their parents.
The Bible tells us that disobedience to parents will be one of the signs of the end times:
1 But mark this: There will be terrible times in the last days. 2 People will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boastful, proud, abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy,
1 Here is a trustworthy saying: Whoever aspires to be an overseer desires a noble task. 2 Now the overseer is to be above reproach, faithful to his wife, temperate, self-controlled, respectable, hospitable, able to teach, 3 not given to drunkenness, not violent but gentle, not quarrelsome, not a lover of money.

The Hebrew word translated "honor" here means to "make heavy" or "weighty". The opposite of “honor” is to “take someone lightly”.

To honor one’s parents includes to prize them, to care for them, and to show respect or reverence to them. This command is given to children but it applies in all stages of life.

“This is not a popular doctrine in our modern world, where youth is worshipped, and old age dreaded or despised. The result is the folly by which men or women strive to remain eternally youthful, only to find it an impossible task.” (Cole)
There is value in all stages of life, so we should honor our parents through the 3 stages of life!
Honoring our parents through the 3 stages of life
Childhood
John Maxwell tells a story about 2 boys on their way to school...and –talking about their families. One boy said—“I’ve figured out a SYSTEM for getting along with my MOM.... It’s very simple--- She tells me what to do....AND I DO IT!!!”
Young Adulthood
Mark Twain once said, “When I was 14 years old, my father was so ignorant I hated to have the old man around. But when I was 21 years old, I was astonished to see how much my father had learned in only 7 years.”
Elderly Parents
“In the Jewish tradition to “honor” meant to “serve food and drink, provide clothing and shelter and lead them “in and out” as long as the parent is alive.”
Pastor John Hagee shares what he told his children, he said, “I am going to move in with you when I cannot take care of myself! I am going to use the phone all day, turn up the TV real loud, invite all my old friends over to eat you out of house and home and I am NEVER going to clean my room! John says his children pray for his good health.”
The best exegesis of this verse:

Parents:
Instruct them in God’s Way
7 Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up.
Discipline your child
6 Train up a child in the way he should go, And when he is old he will not depart from it.
15 Foolishness is bound up in the heart of a child; The rod of correction will drive it far from him.
Provide for our children’s needs
14 Now I am ready to visit you for the third time, and I will not be a burden to you, because what I want is not your possessions but you. After all, children should not have to save up for their parents, but parents for their children.
Do not exasperate your children
21 Fathers, do not aggravate your children, or they will become discouraged.

Why is this command so important?
It’s the right thing to do

Teaches respect for authority
1 Let everyone be subject to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except that which God has established. The authorities that exist have been established by God. 2 Consequently, whoever rebels against the authority is rebelling against what God has instituted, and those who do so will bring judgment on themselves.

It brings joy to our parents
24 The father of a righteous child has great joy; a man who fathers a wise son rejoices in him. 25 May your father and mother rejoice; may she who gave you birth be joyful!

Honor your father and your mother: This command is wise and good, because honor for parents is an essential building block for the stability and health of all society. If the younger generations are constantly at war with older generations, the foundations of society will be destroyed.
What about those who have come from difficult pasts?
Strength to forgive. Oscar Wilde once said, “Children begin by loving their parents; as they grow older they judge them; sometimes they forgive them.” Since God wants us to honor our parents, he also can give us grace and strength to forgive—even when we see our parents’ faults.
