Tonight we come to the 5th Commandment
The first four deal with our relationship with God and the next six deal with our relationship with others.
Tonight we are dealing with the family relationship.
It not only deals with the command to “honor” our fathers and mothers, but it teaches us the principle of honor and God’s blessing when we “honor.”
The fifth commandment is reflected in the principles of almost every culture in all places at all times.
It is a universally recognized principle that children should honor and respect their parents.
The parent gave the child life; therefore the child owes everything he has to the parent.
This is naturally recognized.
It is built into the fabric of life.
Ancient Greece, the Orient, Africa, South America – wherever you go children are expected to honor their parents.
The Bible tells us that disobedience to parents will be one of the signs of the end times:

“This is not a popular doctrine in our modern world, where youth is worshipped, and old age dreaded or despised.
The result is the folly by which men or women strive to remain eternally youthful, only to find it an impossible task.”
(Cole)
There is value in all stages of life, so we should honor our parents through the 3 stages of life!

One boy said—“I’ve figured out a SYSTEM for getting along with my MOM.... It’s very simple--- She tells me what to do....AND I DO IT!!!”
Young Adulthood
Mark Twain once said, “When I was 14 years old, my father was so ignorant I hated to have the old man around.
But when I was 21 years old, I was astonished to see how much my father had learned in only 7 years.”
Elderly Parents
“In the Jewish tradition to “honor” meant to “serve food and drink, provide clothing and shelter and lead them “in and out” as long as the parent is alive.”
Pastor John Hagee shares what he told his children, he said, “I am going to move in with you when I cannot take care of myself!
I am going to use the phone all day, turn up the TV real loud, invite all my old friends over to eat you out of house and home and I am NEVER going to clean my room!
John says his children pray for his good health.”
The best exegesis of this verse:
Parents:
Instruct them in God’s Way
