Scholarly Interpretations
Scholarly Interpretations
Several events in Israel’s history have been interpreted as the fulfillment of some of the prophecies made in . We should consider these carefully to determine if this is faithful to the text.
It’s time to be Bereans!
These people were more willing to listen than the people in Thessalonica. The Bereans were eager to hear what Paul and Silas said and studied the Scriptures every day to find out if these things were true.
Temple Events in History
Temple Events in History
General Titus (later Emperor Titus) of Rome destroyed the city and the sanctuary in 70 AD. Supposedly by accident.
And after the sixty-two weeks, an anointed one shall be cut off and shall have nothing. And the people of the prince who is to come shall destroy the city and the sanctuary. Its end shall come with a flood, and to the end there shall be war. Desolations are decreed.
Antiochus Epiphanes was a Greek-Syrian king from 175 BC to 164 BC, which controlled Jerusalem at that time.
Antiochus Epiphanes was a Greek-Syrian king from 175 BC to 164 BC, which controlled Jerusalem at that time.
Around 168 BC in response to rebellions in Israel, he outlawed Judaism. Placed the statue of Zeus i the temple and sacrificed pigs on the altar. He also stole silver, gold, and several vessels from the temple.
Daniel
And he shall make a strong covenant with many for one week, and for half of the week he shall put an end to sacrifice and offering. And on the wing of abominations shall come one who makes desolate, until the decreed end is poured out on the desolator.”
What is this Abomination?
What is this Abomination?
And he shall make a strong covenant with many for one week, and for half of the week he shall put an end to sacrifice and offering. And on the wing of abominations shall come one who makes desolate, until the decreed end is poured out on the desolator.”
Dan
Forces from him shall appear and profane the temple and fortress, and shall take away the regular burnt offering. And they shall set up the abomination that makes desolate.
Daniel 11:31
And from the time that the regular burnt offering is taken away and the abomination that makes desolate is set up, there shall be 1,290 days.
Through these things appear to have happened in 168 BC, these are the words of Jesus around 30 AD
“So when you see the abomination of desolation spoken of by the prophet Daniel, standing in the holy place (let the reader understand), then let those who are in Judea flee to the mountains.
Jesus describes the abomination from Daniel's prophecy as a future event. So the abominable things done by Antiochus Epiphanes make him a prefigure of the one who will fulfill Daniel’s prophesy. Antiochus becomes a picture of the future antichrist, but is not the fulfillment of the prophecy
Timing wrong for Antiochus
Timing wrong for Antiochus
has a temple and the city destroyed. The events of 9:27 take place afterwards, with the 7 year covenant, the ending of sacrifices, and the abomination
The timing of that would be backwards if 9:26-27 were fulfilled by Titus and Anticochus
Titus destroying the temple fulfills Jesus’ words about not one stone being left on another . and would fulfill . However, Antiochus does not fulfill
Other things that Antiochus did NOT Fulfill
Other things that Antiochus did NOT Fulfill
His armed forces will rise up to desecrate the temple fortress and will abolish the daily sacrifice. Then they will set up the abomination that causes desolation. ( Could be said that Antiochus accomplished this)
The King will do as he pleases. He will exalt and magnify himself above every god and will say unheard of things against the God of gods. He will be successful until the time of wrath is completed for what has been determined must take place. (historically, Antiochus did not “do as he pleases” Rome prevented his second attack on Egypt.)
He will extend his power over many countries; Egypt will not escape. (Antiochus did not invade Egypt, but it didn’t stick)
A Still future Event
A Still future Event
Jesus points to this prophecy as a still-future event. These are the words Jesus used to describe the period marked by the abomination that causes desolation.
What will that time be like?
What will that time be like?
Let the one who is on the housetop not go down to take what is in his house, and let the one who is in the field not turn back to take his cloak. And alas for women who are pregnant and for those who are nursing infants in those days! Pray that your flight may not be in winter or on a Sabbath.
For then there will be great tribulation, such as has not been from the beginning of the world until now, no, and never will be. And if those days had not been cut short, no human being would be saved. But for the sake of the elect those days will be cut short.
Back to the 70’th 7!
Back to the 70’th 7!
And he shall make a strong covenant with many for one week, and for half of the week he shall put an end to sacrifice and offering. And on the wing of abominations shall come one who makes desolate, until the decreed end is poured out on the desolator.”
Mark of the End of the Age
A great distress never to be equaled again is marked by the abomination that causes desolation. According to this sign takes place halfway though the final “seven”. That marks the beginning of a period that is worse than any event in history! According to Jesus this will occur in the “holy place”
“So when you see the abomination of desolation spoken of by the prophet Daniel, standing in the holy place (let the reader understand), then let those who are in Judea flee to the mountains.
What are we looking for?
What are we looking for?
The abomination takes place in the holy place, which is in the temple
And you shall hang the veil from the clasps, and bring the ark of the testimony in there within the veil. And the veil shall separate for you the Holy Place from the Most Holy.
And when the priests came out of the Holy Place, a cloud filled the house of the Lord,
Jesus, who in said that the temple would be destroyed, said in that the abomination would take place on the temple. This points very strongly to the creation of yet a third temple, where Jews will once again offer sacrifices to God
It is in that context that some ruler will make a 7 year contract with “many” which appears to include Israel, but 3.5 years into it he will stop the sacrifices in this new temple and set up the true abomination that causes desolation.
That even marks the beginning of the most distressing event in human history, one that Christians may very well be present to experience.
Christians IN the tribulation?
Christians IN the tribulation?
Here is our food for thought on that topic?
Matthew 24:22
And if those days had not been cut short, no human being would be saved. But for the sake of the elect those days will be cut short.
