Someone to lean on

Who doesn’t like to have someone to lean on? A friend that is closer than a brother (Pro18:24; Jn15:14-15)). Tonight we are going to look at some wise words regarding friendship.
____________________________________________________________
If you were to list people you consider to be a true friend who would that be?

Now let us see what the Bible has to say about true friends.
____________________________________________________________
Proverbs 18:24 NASB95
24 A man of too many friends comes to ruin, But there is a friend who sticks closer than a brother.
Someone once said “A friend is one who comes in when the world has gone out.” or how about a quote from Aristotle:
“What is a friend? A single soul dwelling in two bodies”
How about the words of Jesus?
John 15:14–15 NASB95
14 “You are My friends if you do what I command you. 15 “No longer do I call you slaves, for the slave does not know what his master is doing; but I have called you friends, for all things that I have heard from My Father I have made known to you.
Jn14:1
Friendships develop, friendships grow, and yes some friendships die, or in Jesus case are worth dying for. Friendship’s take effort too, as you can see from the John passage.
Friendship, some are good, and to be honest some can be toxic, so how do we know what friendships are good and what are not truly friendships and are not good for us? I know let’s see what the Bible has to say about it, with our focus being on “true friends”

True Friends are not limited to temporal things.

Friends love at all times (Pro17:17)
Friends are knit together (1Sam18:1-4)
Proverbs 17:17 NASB95
17 A friend loves at all times, And a brother is born for adversity.
True friends love you at all times. Love is a language of the soul. It excites, it inspires, it encourages and yes it entertains. Love is the glue that holds true friendships together, especially in the hard and difficult times.
Friends are not limited by space
Friends are not limited by time
True friends bring the right words at the right time with the right heart and this is the display of love within the friendship.
True friends don’t leave when the going gets tough they look to help, to display their love especially in those times.
Turn in your Bibles to 1Sam18:1-4 and let’s look at passage together
Friends love at all times (Pro17:17)
Friends are knit together (1Sam18:1-4)
1 Samuel 18:1–2 NASB95
1 Now it came about when he had finished speaking to Saul, that the soul of Jonathan was knit to the soul of David, and Jonathan loved him as himself. 2 Saul took him that day and did not let him return to his father’s house.
1 Samuel 18:3–4 NASB95
3 Then Jonathan made a covenant with David because he loved him as himself. 4 Jonathan stripped himself of the robe that was on him and gave it to David, with his armor, including his sword and his bow and his belt.
What do you see, what do you notice, what sticks out to you in those verses?
Friends love at all times (Pro17:17)
Friends are knit together (1Sam18:1-4)
Friends are not limited by time
Friends are not limited by space
In our age of technology we do not need to be in the same place, in the same space with a true friend to be a friend, do we? In the days of Skype, Facetime, Facebook Messenger, E-mails, Texts we can stay connected
Friends love at all times (Pro17:17)
Friends are knit together (1Sam18:1-4)
Friends are not limited by space
Friends are not limited by time
A true friend you can go months without seeing and when you do see them pick up like it were yesterday and like you were never apart.

True Friends Respect You

Respect; does respect mean agree or does it mean respecting you as a person and valuing your thoughts and opinions? Does respect mean you are honest even when it is hard?
__________________________________________________
They show respect by valuing you (Php2:3)
They show respect by being honest and being willing to correct you (Gal6:1; Pro27:6; Pro17:9-10; Pro27:17)
_________________________________________________
They show respect by valuing you (Php2:3)
Philippians 2:3 NASB95
3 Do nothing from selfishness or empty conceit, but with humility of mind regard one another as more important than yourselves;
True friends do not disregard your feelings or treat them as if they do not matter. Respect is one of the true building blocks of a true friendship.
True friends think of the friend more than themselves.
They show respect by valuing you (Php2:3)
They show respect by being honest and being willing to correct you (Gal6:1; Pro27:6; Pro17:9-10; Pro27:17)
True friends are willing to correct you, help you if you have fallen

Proverbs 27:6 NASB95
6 Faithful are the wounds of a friend, But deceitful are the kisses of an enemy.
True friends, true words may hurt, but when they come from the right heart for the right reason the wounds are not to hurt but to help.
One more before moving on
Proverbs 17:9–10 NASB95
9 He who conceals a transgression seeks love, But he who repeats a matter separates intimate friends. 10 A rebuke goes deeper into one who has understanding Than a hundred blows into a fool.
OK, really, just one more
Proverbs 27:17 NASB95
17 Iron sharpens iron, So one man sharpens another.
Proverbs 17:17 NASB95
17 A friend loves at all times, And a brother is born for adversity.

True Friends don’t abandon in adversity

True Friends don’t abandon in adversity

Think about this, do you think like Pro17:17 that a friend is born for adversity or do friends become true friends, brothers as a result of adversity or trouble?
Proverbs 17:17 NASB95
17 A friend loves at all times, And a brother is born for adversity.

Ecclesiastes 4:9–10 NASB95
9 Two are better than one because they have a good return for their labor. 10 For if either of them falls, the one will lift up his companion. But woe to the one who falls when there is not another to lift him up.
True friends bring and help us walk in wisdom (Pro13:20)
Ecclesiastes 4:11–12 NASB95
11 Furthermore, if two lie down together they keep warm, but how can one be warm alone? 12 And if one can overpower him who is alone, two can resist him. A cord of three strands is not quickly torn apart.
Who does not want this? This is what we have when we have a true friend
True friends try to protect us from bad company (1Cor15:33)
We have a good return for our labor, our effort that we put in to develop a friendship that makes someone closer than a brother.
One who will lit us up when we fall
One who will help us keep warm in the cold storms of life
One who, together, we resist the temptations of life
One in which we share the common cord, Christ that is the third cord around the friendship.
True friends are there when you fall (Ecc4:9-12)
True friends bring and help us walk in wisdom (Pro13:20)
Proverbs 13:20 NASB95
20 He who walks with wise men will be wise, But the companion of fools will suffer harm.

Proverbs 17:9 NASB95

Gossip is a friendship killer!
James 4:11 NIV
11 Brothers and sisters, do not slander one another. Anyone who speaks against a brother or sister or judges them speaks against the law and judges it. When you judge the law, you are not keeping it, but sitting in judgment on it.
Do not slander, or speak evil of one another; for remember a true friend over looks a transgression and forgives. So don’t be judgmental either.
True friends do not gossip or slander (Pro17:9; Jam4:11)
True friends forgive (Col3:13)
True friends look out for one another, even when they do not agree
Colossians 3:13 NASB95
13 bearing with one another, and forgiving each other, whoever has a complaint against anyone; just as the Lord forgave you, so also should you.
True friends allow each other to be who they are, including shortcomings and faults.
True friends do not gossip or slander (Pro17:9; Jam4:11)
True friends forgive (Col3:13)
True friend in Jesus words (Jn15:12-17)
True friends look out for one another, even when they do not agree
To be true friend we do not have to see eye to eye, we do not need to agree on everything.
Heaven help the man who speaks evil against a friend for we will always look out for one another.
True friends allow each other to be who they are, including shortcomings and faults.
No perfect people which means no perfect friends. We need to allow our friends to be who they are and accept them with their own nuances, as they accept us for ours.
Again, this is a no judgment zone.
If sinful behavior, that reverts back to Gal6:1 and about gently restoring.
Just one more for tonight
True friends forgive (Col3:13)
True friends look out for one another, even when they do not agree
