I want to ask you, are you really ready for something new?
Are you ready for real change that will truly alter your life?
Though Jesus is the same yesterday, today, and forever, He always seeks to radically and continually change those who follow Him.

I just want to give you a quick background what was going on…before we read the verse..
Jesus had been invited to a party at the home of Levi, otherwise known as Matthew, who had recently joined up with the Lord and His disciples.
At the party was an assortment of people that would have been classified, at least by a devout Jewish person, as the scum of the earth.

The religious leaders couldn’t figure out why someone like Jesus would have anything to do with that sort of crowd.. but Jesus explained that the healthy don’t need a doctor, and that He had come to save that very sort of sinful people.
The religious leaders of that day were bothered by how differently Jesus and His disciples behaved and lived.
To answer them, Jesus gave the parables of the cloth and the wineskins,

—Los discípulos de Juan ayunan y oran con frecuencia, lo mismo que los discípulos de los fariseos, pero los tuyos se la pasan comiendo y bebiendo.
34 Jesús les replicó:
—¿Acaso pueden obligar a los invitados del novio a que ayunen mientras él está con ellos?
35 Llegará el día en que se les quitará el novio; en aquellos días sí ayunarán.
36 Les contó esta parábola:
—Nadie quita un retazo de un vestido nuevo para remendar un vestido viejo.
De hacerlo así, habrá rasgado el vestido nuevo, y el retazo nuevo no hará juego con el vestido viejo.
37 Ni echa nadie vino nuevo en odres viejos.
De hacerlo así, el vino nuevo hará reventar los odres, se derramará el vino y los odres se arruinarán.
38 Más bien, el vino nuevo debe echarse en odres nuevos.
39 Y nadie que haya bebido vino añejo quiere el nuevo, porque dice: “El añejo es mejor”.
After the religious crowd questioned the kind of people that Jesus was hanging out with, they then brought another question regarding His religious practices.

Look at verse 33.
They asked, “…Why do the disciples of John fast often, and make prayers, and likewise the disciples of the Pharisees; but thine eat and drink?”
The religious crowd of that day, and apparently the disciples of John the Baptist, held to a strict regimen of fasting and prayers.
They would pray at specific times each day (usually where everyone could see them), and they would fast at least two days a week.
You see; Pharisees liked the group of people they normally ran around with.
It was a crowd they were comfortable with and made them feel good about themselves.
Yet, Jesus was saying that those old ties and relationships were something He wasn’t interested in.
But here was Jesus and His disciples feasting it up with a bunch of sinners.
His routine was radically different from theirs.
Jesus explained to them that while He was with His disciples, it was something like a wedding feast.
(Pero aquí estaba Jesús y sus discípulos festejando con un montón de pecadores.

He was the bridegroom, and they were celebrating with Him.
There would come a time when His disciples would need to fast, but it was not then.
A wedding in Jesus day was an occasion that brought joy into the lives of poor and simple people.
It was a time of rejoicing, festivity and plenty that might only come once in a lifetime.
The Pharisees were very religious and focused on rules and regulations to the extent that they had NO JOY! Why?
Because legalistic religion does not bring joy.
It brings misery.

Jesus has been calling his disciples and displaying a different lifestyle to them.
He is not behaving in the manner of John and his disciples.
He is not behaving as the Pharisees.
He is being Jesus – sitting with sinners, eating and drinking with them.
He is healing the sick and forgiving sins – all way too radical for the Pharisees.

He is not submitting to the way that things ‘should’ be done.
When he is questioned on this – he shares the above parable about the new garment and the new wineskin.
He is declaring a new way of life.
A new way of living.
Wineskins where created from animal skins that were processed and treated in such a way that they would expand and stretch along with the new wine as it fermented.
Wineskins were bags made of skin or leather, usually a goat hide tied or sown together

As the new wine fermented and expanded, it would stretch the new wineskins.

Putting new (unfermented) wine in old wineskins, which had already been stretched and somewhat dried out, would result in the bursting of the wineskins.

Too often, however, we cling to that which is familiar and comfortable, essentially rejecting the “new wine” of God’s kingdom.

The old practice of sacrificing lambs to atone for people’s sins was no longer adequate, because the faultless Lamb of God arrived who would make the perfect sacrifice of himself.

The priestly system was no longer necessary when the Great High Priest had come.
He Himself would be the ultimate sacrifice for sin, so the sacrificial system would no longer be necessary.
