The Bell
The Bell
▾ Start:
Entice: Have I told you about the bell? 2018 has been a challenging year because of my Dad's relocation and subsequent health problems. One of the things that happens in such circumstances is that you reflect of parts of life that are long forgotten, or hidden in the recesses of heart and mind. Hence….the bell. Kids, back in the 1970s we did this thing called "playing outside." Either at a friends house, or at the school playground, nearly every night. Baseball, football, basketball. All of which we played with 2-10 players, no uniforms, unstructured rules.

Engage: When the bell rang…It was time to go home for supper. Sometimes you might be closer-other times a little further off. When the bell rang you went home. We did not have cell phones, no quick text to see if it was convenient to quit. Mom didn't ask if you were ready. The bell rang and you responded to it's invitation.

16 Passing alongside the Sea of Galilee, he saw Simon and Andrew the brother of Simon casting a net into the sea, for they were fishermen.
17 And Jesus said to them, “Follow me, and I will make you become fishers of men.”
18 And immediately they left their nets and followed him.
19 And going on a little farther, he saw James the son of Zebedee and John his brother, who were in their boat mending the nets.
20 And immediately he called them, and they left their father Zebedee in the boat with the hired servants and followed him.
21 And they went into Capernaum, and immediately on the Sabbath he entered the synagogue and was teaching.
22 And they were astonished at his teaching, for he taught them as one who had authority, and not as the scribes.
