V. 1-5 - The Crowning of David as King

David’s kingship started on the best note possible - He enquired of the Lord

Imagine How different the stories would have ended if these Old Testaments saints enquired after the Lord

Lot - Economics
Sampson - Passion - He had so much potential
Solomon - Peace
David
If we do not enquire of the Lord we will share in their failures

There are several experience I want to share by faith with Old Testament saints

I want to experience crossing the Jordan River
Defeat Goliath’s in my life
Standing still as God gives the victory

His servants crowned him king

His servants were a hodgepodge of people
1 Samuel 22:2 KJV 1900
And every one that was in distress, and every one that was in debt, and every one that was discontented, gathered themselves unto him; and he became a captain over them: and there were with him about four hundred men.
There were bleak, helpless, and hopeless and times through the journey
They were relentlessly chased by King Saul
They had to leave their home land
Made an alliance with their arch enemy
Their home was ransacked
Through it all they stayed behind God’s man.
This was as much as their reward as it was David’s

The Competition v.6-11

David found out that Jabesh GIlead buried the bodies of King Saul and his sons who died in battle

He commends them
David wanted them to join his Kingdom
After all, everything was going well

The enemy

There is always an enemy
Satan is not going to stand by while good things happen
Abner - King Saul’s cousin and Commander in Chief
He was disobedient to God’s plan and elevated a surviving son of Saul - Ishbosheth - to king of Israel
Abner failed to protect the King by David
Abner lost a major battle
Ishbosheth was named king by a general but not God

Right motives, wrong choice

Having right motives is not the end all
Right motives must be followed by right action
1 Kings 20:36 KJV 1900
Then said he unto him, Because thou hast not obeyed the voice of the Lord, behold, as soon as thou art departed from me, a lion shall slay thee. And as soon as he was departed from him, a lion found him, and slew him.
We can be sincere but sincerely wrong!
Our motives must be right but also our actions
John 14:15 KJV 1900
If ye love me, keep my commandments.

A Senseless Battle that solved nothing v.12-32

Conclusion

Ishbosheth - Weak people - He got to where he was because of who he knew. He was manipulated by Abner - he would be assassinated in 2 years
Abner - Selfish people - Manipulators - he got what he wanted but lost everything he had in two years
People called of God for their position
