The Kind of Religion We Need Today
(NLT)
24 You see yourself, walk away, and forget what you look like. 25 But if you look carefully into the perfect law that sets you free, and if you do what it says and don’t forget what you heard, then God will bless you for doing it. 26 If you claim to be religious but don’t control your tongue, you are fooling yourself, and your religion is worthless. 27 Pure and genuine religion in the sight of God the Father means caring for orphans and widows in their distress and refusing to let the world corrupt you.

Our Personal Religion, or our claim to be Religious.

(NLT) 2 After dark one evening, he came to speak with Jesus. “Rabbi,” he said, “we all know that God has sent you to teach us. Your miraculous signs are evidence that God is with you.” 3 Jesus replied, “I tell you the truth, unless you are born again, you cannot see the Kingdom of God.” 4 “What do you mean?” exclaimed Nicodemus. “How can an old man go back into his mother’s womb and be born again?”

Many in today’s world profess religion but have never experienced a spiritual and personal encounter with Jesus Christ.

We must be “born again” through repentance and faith. When God forgives our sins, He receives us into the family of God, Luke tells us...

2 “Do you think those Galileans were worse sinners than all the other people from Galilee?” Jesus asked. “Is that why they suffered? 3 Not at all! And you will perish, too, unless you repent of your sins and turn to God. 4 And what about the eighteen people who died when the tower in Siloam fell on them? Were they the worst sinners in Jerusalem? 5 No, and I tell you again that unless you repent, you will perish, too.”

Our Purifying Religion, what purify’s us?

“But if we are living in the light, as God is in the light, then we have fellowship with each other, and the blood of Jesus, his Son, cleanses (purify’s, word added) us from all sin.”
7But if we are living in the light, as God is in the light, then we have fellowship with each other, and the blood of Jesus, his Son, cleanses us from all sin.

Many Christians have never totally committed their lives to Jesus Christ. They falter because they persist in having their own way.

We must surrender our will completely to do God’s will. Not 70%, not 80% but 100%, COMPLETELY! Doing so brings cleansing and the presence of the Holy Spirit.

Our Positive Religion, (Opposite of Negative Religion)

13 “So don’t be surprised, dear brothers and sisters, if the world hates you. 14 If we love our brothers and sisters who are believers, it proves that we have passed from death to life. But a person who has no love is still dead. 15 Anyone who hates another brother or sister is really a murderer at heart. And you know that murderers don’t have eternal life within them.”

15 Anyone who hates another brother or sister is really a murderer at heart. And you know that murderers don’t have eternal life within them.”

There is a lack of commitment in today’s religion. Many are vague and uncertain about their spiritual state. They declare, “I guess so,” or “I hope so, or “I have my own church at home.”

We can be positive, for we “know [in whom we] have believed.” No argument can refute the “I know,” or “I have” response. Timothy tells us:

12”That is why I am suffering here in prison. But I am not ashamed of it, for I know the one in whom I trust, and I am sure that he is able to guard what I have entrusted to him until the day of his return.”

12That is why I am suffering here in prison. But I am not ashamed of it, for I know the one in whom I trust, and I am sure that he is able to guard what I have entrusted to him until the day of his return.

Our Powerful Religion

“and we have a priceless inheritance—an inheritance that is kept in heaven for you, pure and undefiled, beyond the reach of change and decay. 5 And through your faith, God is protecting you by his power until you receive this salvation, which is ready to be revealed on the last day for all to see.”

5And through your faith, God is protecting you by his power until you receive this salvation, which is ready to be revealed on the last day for all to see.

Most modern religion’s makes no claims concerning its power to save, sanctify, and sustain. They are powerless religions.

The need is for a religion with power—God’s power. He is able to forgive sins, cleanse hearts, soften hearts and heal the sick. Again Timothy tells us:.....

12 " thank Christ Jesus our Lord, who has given me strength to do his work. He considered me trustworthy and appointed me to serve him,”

12 I thank Christ Jesus our Lord, who has given me strength to do his work. He considered me trustworthy and appointed me to serve him,

Our Productive Religion, the work we are instructed to do.

V. Productive Religion

“I no longer call you slaves, because a master doesn’t confide in his slaves. Now you are my friends, since I have told you everything the Father told me. 16 You didn’t choose me. I chose you. I appointed you to go and produce lasting fruit, so that the Father will give you whatever you ask for, using my name. 17 This is my command: Love each other"

17This is my command: Love each other.

Many Christians fail to work diligently, or at all for God. Some are unconcerned; some are neglectful. Others are spiritually lazy.

What about those who just use “Religion” or “Spiritually” for their own gain or for their own agenda? Know anyone like that? Of course we do. Do you fall into this category?

Our days must be filled with doing God’s business. Jesus is coming soon. We should pray for the needs of others, are we? We must assist the less fortunate, are we? And we must be sharing Christ with the unsaved. Are we?

“But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you. And you will be my witnesses, telling people about me everywhere—in Jerusalem, throughout Judea, in Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.”

AMEN
