Jesus has just promised the Spirit to His reeling disciples.
They are reeling because they know.
Jesus is leaving.
Jesus has told them that they will suffer.
All of this is rooted in a alack of trust in Jesus.
Jesus is aware of their doubt. He is aware of everything. He’s omniscient.
And Jesus, knowing these disciples, and knowing us, knows that we need reassurance.
Furthermore, Jesus knows that they need him.
Think of the Scripture you have read where Jesus has to rebuke the disciples. They need his presence.
Think of the times in your life where the Words of Christ have rebuked you. Maybe right in this building.
What Jesus is promising in this passage is that there will be no gap in this.
Jesus’s desire for his disciples obedience isn’t left hanging in the balance.
He isn’t abandoning them.
Philippians 1:6 NASB95
For I am confident of this very thing, that He who began a good work in you will perfect it until the day of Christ Jesus.
But he also isn’t abandoning us.
His desire for my holiness and your holiness as his disciples doesn not change, and he know that we will need help.
This is why He sends the Spirit.
Look in verse 8
John 16:8 NASB95
“And He, when He comes, will convict the world concerning sin and righteousness and judgment;
First, we must define the pronoun here.
“he” is the Holy Spirit.
But who is the Holy Spirit.
The Baptist Faith and Message defines the Holy Spirit this way:
“The Holy Spirit is the Spirit of God, fully divine. He inspired holy men of old to write the Scriptures. Through illumination He enables men to understand truth. He exalts Christ. He convicts men of sin, of righteousness, and of judgment. He calls men to the Saviour, and effects regeneration. At the moment of regeneration He baptizes every believer into the Body of Christ. He cultivates Christian character, comforts believers, and bestows the spiritual gifts by which they serve God through His church. He seals the believer unto the day of final redemption. His presence in the Christian is the guarantee that God will bring the believer into the fullness of the stature of Christ. He enlightens and empowers the believer and the church in worship, evangelism, and service.”
This is the help that Jesus is sending.
But specifically Jesus is going to deal with three way in which the Holy Spirit helps us in verse 8-11.
In verse 8, Jesus speaks of His coming. This coming will take place on the Day of pentecost. This is recorded in if you want to go and read it earlier, but bear in mind the Day of Pentecost was a special day. It was a one time event.
We celebrate Pentecost. We’re thankful for Pentecost, but we must not try and reduplicate Pentecost by human emotion and irreverence.
Sadly, this is what happens in lots of churches today.
Pastors will try and reduplicate this experience because they want the people to have an experience.
But bear this in your mind:
Verse 8 does not say that when the holy Spirit comes, he will give you an awesome experience filled with dancing and shouting babble. Church, It doesn’t say that. And too many times, the works and theatre of men are passed off as the work of the holy Spirit.
Well, if he doesn’t work that way, how does he work.
Just go to the Scriptures to find this out. In fact, go to this one, where Jesus, the Lord of All creation tells you what the Spirit will come and do.
Again
John 16:8 NASB95
“And He, when He comes, will convict the world concerning sin and righteousness and judgment;
and he goes on.
John 16:9 NASB95
concerning sin, because they do not believe in Me;
The first act thing the Holy Spirit does is he convicts concerning sin.
what does convict mean?
What is a convict?
to convict means to declare someone guilty.
A convict is a person who is being punished why? because they have been declared guilty.
one of the Holy Spirit’s jobs is to convict people of their sin.
To show them their depravity.
To show them their lostness.
To bring us to a reality that we are guilty.
That we are guilty of:
placing anything before God - making graven images Idolatry - idolaters
of dishonoring the name of God- blasphemers
of treating the Lord’s Day as any other day- Sabbath Breakers
of dishonoring our parents- rebellious children
of killing and hating in our heart- murderers
of lust and adultery which makes us adulterers at heart
of theft - thieves.
bearing false witness- we are liars.
Coveting- coveter
the Holy Spirt comes to show you that you, because of you are disqualified.
He stacks the evidence against you so that you will no without question, that you are unworthy.
Personal Testimony
In order for you to believe in Christ in a way that leads to salvation, the Holy Spirit must first break down your sense of your own righteousness.
And He does this in love.
He does this to highlight your unbelief.
He convicts because they do not believe in me.
The goal is that one would recognize their conviction, lay down their effort of trying to work themselves saved, and come running to the cross, but people still don’t believe.
The height of sinfulness is knowing your sinfulness and refusing to believe.
John Macarthur says “The sin of constant unbelief is the sin that finally damns people, since all other are forgiven when a person believes savingly in him.”
John 3:18 NASB95
“He who believes in Him is not judged; he who does not believe has been judged already, because he has not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.
In , rebukes those who were unwilling to believe in him.
John 5:40 NASB95
and you are unwilling to come to Me so that you may have life.
In , He issues a warning.
John 8:24 NASB95
“Therefore I said to you that you will die in your sins; for unless you believe that I am He, you will die in your sins.”
Jesus is sending the Holy Spirit to convict concerning sin.
But not only that.
John
John 16:9 NASB95
concerning sin, because they do not believe in Me;

He will convict concerning righteousness.

John 16:10 NASB95
and concerning righteousness, because I go to the Father and you no longer see Me;
He will convict the world concerning righteousness.
keep in mind this is the standard.
Righteousness- the state of being righteous.
Righteous- means perfect.
So not only will the Holy Spirit convict and convince one of their sin, but He will also convict them concerning the standard.
While Jesus has been present with them in the earth, he has been the picture of righteousness.
He has perfectly obeyed every Law.
Jesus Christ succeeded in every way that we failed.
Now that Christ is returning to the Father, the holy Spirit will convict the world concerning righteousness.
And he does so through a living Savior who was crucified.
This part of the Holy Spirit’s work is to reveal to the world the supremacy of Christ because of His resurrection.
By His resurrection, it vindicates Jesus as the Righteous Servant.
In salvation, the Holy Spirit convinces the person:
That they are a sinner.
That Jesus was not and that Jesus lives, and thats what makes Him worthy of our trust.
But not only that.
John 16:11 NASB95
and concerning judgment, because the ruler of this world has been judged.
The third job he list in as far as conviction of the Holy Spirit, is the conviction concerning judgment, because Satan has been judged.
One of the Holy Spirit’s jobs is to show us that Satan has been defeated.
The ruler of the world is a defeated foe.
Essentially, what is happening with this is a warning to the person lost in sin by the Holy Spirit.
The warning is this:
Christ has defeated Satan through His death on the cross and the judgment he took in our place. Trust in Christ now, or face the judgment that will come on Satan and all those with him who choose to oppose Christ.
All of this:
Conviction of:
Sin
Righteousness
Judgment
Is to lead the sinner to turn from their sin and to repent.
The Holy Spirit has been sent for this.
This is the Message that the Holy Spirit specializes in
“You are a sinner. Christ has met God’s requirement of righteousness. Repent or be judged with Satan.”
Acts 17:30–31 NASB95
“Therefore having overlooked the times of ignorance, God is now declaring to men that all people everywhere should repent, because He has fixed a day in which He will judge the world in righteousness through a Man whom He has appointed, having furnished proof to all men by raising Him from the dead.”
John 16:12 NASB95
“I have many more things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now.
The disciples are overwhelmed.
Imagine what they are feeling right now.
Jesus has more to say, but Jesus is sufficed to allow the Holy Spirit to teach them when the time comes.
John 16:13 NASB95
“But when He, the Spirit of truth, comes, He will guide you into all the truth; for He will not speak on His own initiative, but whatever He hears, He will speak; and He will disclose to you what is to come.
Essentially, he is telling them, trust me, one day you will know.
The helper is coming and he is coming from me. He is coming to disclose the truth to you.
He is coming to be my communication to you.
He is coming to lead them in all truth, and disclose what is to come.
Jesus said he was done, but what he just said means a great deal.
Bear in mind the book that I am preaching from right now is a result of this.
The New Testament is a result of the Holy Spirit doing what Jesus said he would do here.
The fact is, Jesus was right, as always.
They would know. They would follow the Holy Spirit. The Spirit would lead them in all truth, and He is continuing to do this even this morning through the preaching of the inspired word and he does this all to the glory of Christ.
Look in verse 14
John 16:14 NASB95
“He will glorify Me, for He will take of Mine and will disclose it to you.
One of the last things Jesus says regarding the SPirit in this passage is that the Spirit will glorify Christ.
He will glorify me.
How by taking what is Christ’s and disclosing it to the disciples.
The Spirit still does this today.
The Spirit will take the message of Christ, the Word of Christ, and he delivers it to the ears of those who are his. Through this work, Christ is glorified because it is through the word of Christ, delivered by the Spirit, that people are saved.
Romans 10:17 NASB95
So faith comes from hearing, and hearing by the word of Christ.
John 16:15 NASB95
“All things that the Father has are Mine; therefore I said that He takes of Mine and will disclose it to you.
Triune work of communication.
The Father has communicated through the Son, The Son will communicate through the Spirit.
This is what the Holy Spirit does:
He convicts of sin.
He convicts of righteousness.
He convicts of judgment.
He illuminates and guides in truth.
He delivers the message of Christ.
He glorifies Christ.
These are the things that the Holy Spirit does.
Pastors and some people say the Holy Spirit does a whole lot of things that the Holy Spirit just does not do.
These are the things He does.
Is he working these things in your own heart?
