Jesus has just promised the Spirit to His reeling disciples.
They are reeling because they know.
Jesus is leaving.
Jesus has told them that they will suffer.
All of this is rooted in a alack of trust in Jesus.
Jesus is aware of their doubt.
He is aware of everything.
He’s omniscient.
And Jesus, knowing these disciples, and knowing us, knows that we need reassurance.
Furthermore, Jesus knows that they need him.
Think of the Scripture you have read where Jesus has to rebuke the disciples.
They need his presence.
Think of the times in your life where the Words of Christ have rebuked you.
Maybe right in this building.
What Jesus is promising in this passage is that there will be no gap in this.
Jesus’s desire for his disciples obedience isn’t left hanging in the balance.
He isn’t abandoning them.
But he also isn’t abandoning us.
His desire for my holiness and your holiness as his disciples doesn not change, and he know that we will need help.
This is why He sends the Spirit.
Look in verse 8
First, we must define the pronoun here.
“he” is the Holy Spirit.
But who is the Holy Spirit.
The Baptist Faith and Message defines the Holy Spirit this way:
“The Holy Spirit is the Spirit of God, fully divine.
He inspired holy men of old to write the Scriptures.
Through illumination He enables men to understand truth.
He exalts Christ.
He convicts men of sin, of righteousness, and of judgment.
He calls men to the Saviour, and effects regeneration.
At the moment of regeneration He baptizes every believer into the Body of Christ.
He cultivates Christian character, comforts believers, and bestows the spiritual gifts by which they serve God through His church.
He seals the believer unto the day of final redemption.
His presence in the Christian is the guarantee that God will bring the believer into the fullness of the stature of Christ.
He enlightens and empowers the believer and the church in worship, evangelism, and service.”
This is the help that Jesus is sending.
But specifically Jesus is going to deal with three way in which the Holy Spirit helps us in verse 8-11.
In verse 8, Jesus speaks of His coming.
This coming will take place on the Day of pentecost.
This is recorded in if you want to go and read it earlier, but bear in mind the Day of Pentecost was a special day.
It was a one time event.
We celebrate Pentecost.
We’re thankful for Pentecost, but we must not try and reduplicate Pentecost by human emotion and irreverence.
Sadly, this is what happens in lots of churches today.
Pastors will try and reduplicate this experience because they want the people to have an experience.
But bear this in your mind:
Verse 8 does not say that when the holy Spirit comes, he will give you an awesome experience filled with dancing and shouting babble.
Church, It doesn’t say that.
And too many times, the works and theatre of men are passed off as the work of the holy Spirit.
Well, if he doesn’t work that way, how does he work.
Just go to the Scriptures to find this out.
In fact, go to this one, where Jesus, the Lord of All creation tells you what the Spirit will come and do.
Again
and he goes on.
The first act thing the Holy Spirit does is he convicts concerning sin.
what does convict mean?
What is a convict?
to convict means to declare someone guilty.
A convict is a person who is being punished why? because they have been declared guilty.
one of the Holy Spirit’s jobs is to convict people of their sin.
To show them their depravity.
To show them their lostness.
To bring us to a reality that we are guilty.
That we are guilty of:
placing anything before God -
making graven images Idolatry - idolaters
of dishonoring the name of God- blasphemers
of treating the Lord’s Day as any other day- Sabbath Breakers
of dishonoring our parents- rebellious children

the Holy Spirt comes to show you that you, because of you are disqualified.
He stacks the evidence against you so that you will no without question, that you are unworthy.
Personal Testimony
In order for you to believe in Christ in a way that leads to salvation, the Holy Spirit must first break down your sense of your own righteousness.
And He does this in love.
He does this to highlight your unbelief.
He convicts because they do not believe in me.
The goal is that one would recognize their conviction, lay down their effort of trying to work themselves saved, and come running to the cross, but people still don’t believe.
The height of sinfulness is knowing your sinfulness and refusing to believe.
John Macarthur says “The sin of constant unbelief is the sin that finally damns people, since all other are forgiven when a person believes savingly in him.”
In , rebukes those who were unwilling to believe in him.
In , He issues a warning.
Jesus is sending the Holy Spirit to convict concerning sin.
But not only that.
John
He will convict concerning righteousness.
He will convict the world concerning righteousness.
keep in mind this is the standard.
Righteousness- the state of being righteous.
Righteous- means perfect.
So not only will the Holy Spirit convict and convince one of their sin, but He will also convict them concerning the standard.
While Jesus has been present with them in the earth, he has been the picture of righteousness.
He has perfectly obeyed every Law.
Jesus Christ succeeded in every way that we failed.
Now that Christ is returning to the Father, the holy Spirit will convict the world concerning righteousness.
