Jesus calls and prepares the 12 for their mission.

Mat 10:1-

Matthew 10:1–4 ESV

And he called to him his twelve disciples and gave them authority over unclean spirits, to cast them out, and to heal every disease and every affliction. The names of the twelve apostles are these: first, Simon, who is called Peter, and Andrew his brother; James the son of Zebedee, and John his brother; Philip and Bartholomew; Thomas and Matthew the tax collector; James the son of Alphaeus, and Thaddaeus; Simon the Zealot, and Judas Iscariot, who betrayed him.

We see this chapter beginning right after the prayer for laborers for the harvest. Jesus gave authority (power) to the disciples

Someone cannot give what they do not have. John the Baptist said in that “a man can receive nothing unless it has been given to him from heaven.” Jesus has been given this authority from God, He has stated this many times, and will show that His authority is from God.

What Do We Learn?

What do we learn about God (Father, Son or Holy Spirit)?

God can give authority or power as He sees fit.

Just as the gifts of the spirit, he gives power. He choses what power to give as He does the gifts of the spirit. We don’t get to say I want this power (or gift). He decides.

God can use anyone.

Judas is given the same power as the other 11. There is no distinction given or made here. Jesus already had shown us in that many will have prophesied, cast out demons, and done many wonders all in His name. But only to hear:

God can use anyone to further the kingdom, even if they are not part of the inheritance.

God is Specific

God will Provide

God is merciful

v12-13

Matthew 10:12–13 ESV

As you enter the house, greet it. And if the house is worthy, let your peace come upon it, but if it is not worthy, let your peace return to you.

God is Just

And if anyone will not receive you or listen to your words, shake off the dust from your feet when you leave that house or town.

Truly, I say to you, it will be more bearable on the day of judgment for the land of Sodom and Gomorrah than for that town.

Man has the ability to choose to believe.
