Genesis 14:20 NLT
20 And blessed be God Most High, who has defeated your enemies for you.” Then Abram gave Melchizedek a tenth of all the goods he had recovered.
People misunderstand the Principle of tithing and because of this are missing out on blessings in their lives.
This is important because Jesus said
Matthew 6:21 NIV
21 For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.
Tithing and giving, or the lack of it becomes a heart issue.
Abraham -
He had just won a battle where he retrieved Lot and his possessions which had been stolen.
As a way to give thanks to the Lord, Abram gave 1/10 of all he had to Melchizedek.
What is significant is that this precedes the Law of Moses by over 400 years. Tithing is not part of the Mosiac Law… it predates it.
Later, Abraham’s grandson Jacob also pledged a tenth to the Lord.
Genesis 28:22 NLT
22 And this memorial pillar I have set up will become a place for worshiping God, and I will present to God a tenth of everything he gives me.”

God’s laws don’t change. People knew adultery was wrong before Moses codified it. They knew it was wrong to lie and steal. People evidently knew to give 1/10th.
Abraham tithed long before he was circumcised.
Here is a principle along with the tithe..
Genesis 4:4–5 NIV
4 And Abel also brought an offering—fat portions from some of the firstborn of his flock. The Lord looked with favor on Abel and his offering, 5 but on Cain and his offering he did not look with favor. So Cain was very angry, and his face was downcast.
Abel brought God his first and his best. Cain did not. God was pleased with Abel and not with Cain because Abel did his best.
Matthew 6:21 NLT
21 Wherever your treasure is, there the desires of your heart will also be.
