People are always people.

All would gather and bring what they could
Rich/poor Slave/Free All would come
The rich would bring much and the slave very little.
All would share the meal together.
but not in Corinth —>

—> 1 Corinthians was written prior to the Gospel of Mark.
Making this one of the first written accounts of anything Jesus did.
—> The bread a chance for us to touch Christ.
A chance for us to remember his brokeness and his suffering for us.
—> The juice or wine a reminder that we are no longer under the Old Covenant but a New Covenant.
—> Legalism and animal sacrifice are gone.
The new rule of the day is love.
—> With the shed blood of Christ the relationship has changed from criminal & judge to Child & Father
—> The juice reminds us of that covenant.

1 cor 11:27-
This supper is not to be eaten quickly.
It is not to be scarfed down.
The word for supper is diepnon
This is the last meal of the day, a meal that is meant to be savored and enjoyed.
But it also says we are to come to the table in a worthy manner.
We can enjoy the bread and the wine but we must enjoy it in the correct way.
We enjoy it with the correct heart.
That is why we in the UMC begin the Lord’s Supper by opening the table to all and making time to get our hearts right with the Lord.
