The Mission of Jesus

The Mission of Jesus was a God-initiated saving mission.

He forgives sins, by his free-grace.

-Not

The ongoing mission of Jesus was not to teach people how to be good and to love one another.

The mission of Jesus was not to help us have a better life, or 10 steps to get to God.

-He came to testify to the truth.

John 18:

His mission was to show us who God is, and to show us what we are.

We are

We were Perishing, condemned, lovers of darkness.

His actions show he was God

His Death Shows His Divinity

That’s why he called on people to believe in himself

So Jesus came to testify to the truth and to reveal himself as God, and to die for our sins so that we would put our faith in him and be saved.

2. Jesus Sends The Church

“even so I send you” GET THE EMPHASIS

They are taking Christ’s place, serving in his stead… Not as savior, but as messenger.

Truth-teller.

Witness.

It is with authority that Jesus sends the Church.

It’s not by human authority that the Church carries out her mission, but with the same authority that Jesus carried out by his mission.

We are called to bear witness of Jesus in his place.

who hath conferred on men so high an honour, as to make them the ambassadors and deputies of God, and of his Son, in declaring the forgiveness of sins.

This is the whole Job of the whole Church.

The Empowering of the Church

We ought to cry out, “Who is sufficient for these things”

-This was a foretaste of what was to come.

The task of bearing witness to Jesus would be impossible for the church without the power of the Holy Spirit (John 15:26–27; cf.

Acts 1:8).

the Spirit was given to the Apostles on this occasion in such a manner, that they were only sprinkled by his grace, but were not filled with full power; for, when the Spirit appeared on them in tongues of fire, (Acts 2:3,) they were entirely renewed.

God empowers his by sending the Spirit to enable her mission.

The Authority and Jurisdiction of the Church

Forgiveness, remitting and retaining.

The Church is commissioned with the authority to forgive or retain sins?

This is her jurisdiction, this is the sphere of her influence.

-Not through confession or penance.

Binding or Loosing.

For the Jews, “binding and loosing” expressed the activity of a judge who declared persons innocent or guilty and thus “bound” or “loosed” them from the charges made against them.

Similarly, the Spirit-filled community has authority to judge people, a function inherited from Jesus (5:27; cf.

Isa 22:22).

-Make judgments, authoritative declarations

This authority was possessed by the apostles, “let all the house of Israel know.”

They were messengers with an authoritative declaration.

This declaration was your sins are forgiven.

So now when the Church preaches the Gospel (The message of the Apostles) that message has the same authority.

When we preach the gospel it is an authoritative declaration of divine pardon.

This is our authority and jurisdiction.

We are sent to proclaim a message.

Application

We don’t seek to win people’s approval, we’re not court jesters there for the approval of the world, we are messengers like Nathan the Prophet standing before David declaring “Thus says the Lord.”
