2. Expectations of the characters in the story

Each character plays a role in how they view Jesus

A. The crowd coming out of the city

i. Coming from all over to celebrate the Passover

ii. They hear about Jesus and want to see all the commotion.

B. The disciples struggle to understand the fulfillment of

i. The disciple’s expectations were one of conquering Rome

ii. They lacked understanding though to see the big picture

iii. They believed but didn’t fully understand the mission

C. The crowd who saw Lazarus raised from the dead.

i. They saw him as a conquering king

ii. They bore witness to his raising of Lazarus

D. The Pharisees failing to stop Jesus.

i. Exaggerated statements but…

ii. They are prophetic due to the next part of the story.

3. What are our expectations of jesus

-Jesus more often than not, is not what we expect.
A. Are we like the crowds coming out to see a spectacle?
i. Do we see him as a shiny object that loses its charm?
ii. Example: iPhone, cars, etc.

B. Are we like the witnesses of Lazarus who want a conquering king?

i. Do we see Jesus as a means to get stuff?

ii. Example: Job, bigger house, car, great college.

C. Are we like the disciples who believe but struggle?

i. Do we see Jesus as the suffering servant and the conquering king to come?

ii. Example:

-God has His expectations and we must align ourselves with them.

A. Are my desires, His desires?

B. Do I pick up my ball when God doesn’t give me what I want?
