Introduction

After the overview which showed the main themes and various views on who Jesus is, we skip over the early part of His ministry and go right to the journey to Jerusalem and the cross. We’ll briefly talk about Jesus entry to Jerusalem themes of teaching there, last supper, trial. The service will end with observing communion.
Three times Jesus predicted his suffering, death, and resurrection. Now we will see the realization of His predictions.

Next story shows they still don’t understand.

To the Cross

2 days before Passover

All are sad and ask Am I the one? – or It can’t be me, can it? One by one.

Invites the reader to also reflect and ask.
Jesus responds that it will be one eating with Him. Eating being a form of fellowship, relationship, trust. Betraying that trust of eating together.

After singing a hymn together they go out to the Mt. of Olives
He just predicted betrayal. Then He tells them they will ALL fall away.
Throughout Mark, we see Peter frequently answering up first and forceful. He represents the thoughts and concerns of the disciples, and in a way is representative of all disciples.
I will not fall away. Jesus says, but you will. If I have to die with You I will never deny You.
Still the perspective of a political move by Jesus and Peter/all disciples will be there to cooperate.
Praying in the garden after meal, Jesus now in deep sorrow because He knows full well what is coming. He’s been trying to tell the disciples but they don’t get it yet. Here we see them already falling away.
Then Judas shows up with the mob, chief priests, scribes, elders. Betrayed Jesus in the meal, and now with a friend’s kiss.
As they arrested Him, good old Peter whips out the sword and makes a slash with it. Still thinks it’s political. Give him credit for trying.
Jesus led away to the high priest. Fake trial with so-called witnesses who couldn’t get their stories straight. Kind of like watching all the media outlets.

61 But he kept silent and did not answer. Again the high priest questioned him, “Are you the Messiah, the Son of the Blessed One?”

62 “I am,” said Jesus, “and you will see the Son of Man seated at the right hand of Power and coming with the clouds of heaven.”
Jesus answers with the name of God. I Am. Claiming to be one with God and authority.

Now Jesus gets the treatment He kept predicting – beaten, mocked, condemned.
Condemned by religious leaders to die, but they did not have the power and authority to kill Him.
Throughout this story are the snapshots of Peter’s story of falling away and denying Jesus as predicted.
Sent From the high priest (religious) to Pilate (the government). Just as Jesus said - handed over to the Gentiles
According to Mark, there is no record of a trial before Pilate, but an exchange of life for life. Jesus in place of Barabbas.
Jesus’ life bring Barabbas freedom.
Soldiers called out the whole battalion and mocked Jesus as king. Then led Him to the hill and nailed Him to the cross.
Between two criminals or rebels.
All who were there were insulting, mocking, taunting. Suffering. Alone.
Lonely to be the ransom.

Jesus went to the cross alone. He gave Himself willingly. Even His most faithful followers fell away.

14:22 My body – given in place of sinners. The picture of Jesus being exchanged for Barabbas. Jesus exchanged for you.
14:24 My blood – the covenant. Poured out for many. The ransom for many. (not an exclusive many meaning not all, but an inclusive many as in all) the new covenant between God and man ratified in the blood of Jesus.

What About You?

Am I the one? Will I betray Jesus?
Surely not me, I will not fall away.
How do you see Jesus? The hope of our political future? (Not that Jesus will become president, but “Christian principles and values” will rule the country)
Jesus went willingly to the cross. For you. As the ransom for many. As the ransom for you.
