2 Samuel 7 12-16

TITLE:  Davidic Covenant

TEXT:  2 SAMUEL 7  1 Chronicles 17

Objective:  When God says "no", it is for our very best.  He wants us to be totally submissive to His will and then God will bless us abundantly beyond our imagination.  This is to teach the Davidic Covenant.

1.  Summary of 1 Chronicles

        a.  Explanation:  Remember they days when kids sold newspapers on the streets, shouting “Extra, Read all about it.”  Well, this is the daily chronicle, with an editorial on David.  Since there is one Chronicle, it represents 1 Chronicles. See David’s picture?  You know its David because of the harp and whole heart.  1 Chronicles—Editorial on David.

        b.  Overview:  The two books of Chronicles are divine “editorials” priestly recollections and interpretations of the historical facts surrounding the life of God’s people from the reign of David to the Babylonian exile.  1 Chronicles recounts the righteous reign of David.  Chapters 1-9 catalog David’s ancestry dating back to Adam, and chapters 10-29 focus on the details of David’s administration.  Through out the book, the emphasis is on proper worship of the one true God—worship of David’s life consistently exemplified.

Psalm 89:3-4 ESV 3 You have said, “I have made a covenant with my chosen one; I have sworn to David my servant: 4 ‘I will establish your offspring forever, and build your throne for all generations.’ ” Selah

Psalm 89:34-36 ESV 34 I will not violate my covenant or alter the word that went forth from my lips. 35 Once for all I have sworn by my holiness; I will not lie to David. 36 His offspring shall endure forever, his throne as long as the sun before me.

B.  Qualified to be virgin born

Isaiah 7:14, cf mat 1:23

Isaiah 7:14 ESV 14 Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign. Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel.

Matthew 1:23 ESV 23 “Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and they shall call his name Immanuel” (which means, God with us).

Isaiah 9:6‑7—further details to qualify Jesus

Isaiah 9:6-7 ESV 6 For to us a child is born, to us a son is given; and the government shall be upon his shoulder, and his name shall be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. 7 Of the increase of his government and of peace there will be no end, on the throne of David and over his kingdom, to establish it and to uphold it with justice and with righteousness from this time forth and forevermore. The zeal of the Lord of hosts will do this.

        C.  Luke 1:26‑37

‑‑Christmas commemorates the great administrator of all eternity

G. Zechariah 14:4-9 ESV 4 On that day his feet shall stand on the Mount of Olives that lies before Jerusalem on the east, and the Mount of Olives shall be split in two from east to west by a very wide valley, so that one half of the Mount shall move northward, and the other half southward. 5 And you shall flee to the valley of my mountains, for the valley of the mountains shall reach to Azal. And you shall flee as you fled from the earthquake in the days of Uzziah king of Judah. Then the Lord my God will come, and all the holy ones with him. 6 On that day there shall be no light, cold, or frost. 7 And there shall be a unique day, which is known to the Lord, neither day nor night, but at evening time there shall be light. 8 On that day living waters shall flow out from Jerusalem, half of them to the eastern sea and half of them to the western sea. It shall continue in summer as in winter. 9 And the Lord will be king over all the earth. On that day the Lord will be one and his name one.

H.  David's Throne will be reestablished

Amos 9:11 ESV 11 “In that day I will raise up the booth of David that is fallen and repair its breaches, and raise up its ruins and rebuild it as in the days of old,

Jeremiah 23:5-6 ESV 5 “Behold, the days are coming, declares the Lord, when I will raise up for David a righteous Branch, and he shall reign as king and deal wisely, and shall execute justice and righteousness in the land. 6 In his days Judah will be saved, and Israel will dwell securely. And this is the name by which he will be called: ‘The Lord is our righteousness.’

IV.  His kingdom will be forever

Revelation 22:16-17 ESV 16 “I, Jesus, have sent my angel to testify to you about these things for the churches. I am the root and the descendant of David, the bright morning star.” 17 The Spirit and the Bride say, “Come.” And let the one who hears say, “Come.” And let the one who is thirsty come; let the one who desires take the water of life without price.

Revelation 22:20 ESV 20 He who testifies to these things says, “Surely I am coming soon.” Amen. Come, Lord Jesus!

Conclusion:

1.  Will you submit to the King of Kings

2.  Will you give Jesus 1st place in your life

3.  Every one will bow to Jesus Christ.

4.  When God says NO, it is best.
