when love is not Love

John 21:1–5 AV
After these things Jesus shewed himself again to the disciples at the sea of Tiberias; and on this wise shewed he himself. There were together Simon Peter, and Thomas called Didymus, and Nathanael of Cana in Galilee, and the sons of Zebedee, and two other of his disciples. Simon Peter saith unto them, I go a fishing. They say unto him, We also go with thee. They went forth, and entered into a ship immediately; and that night they caught nothing. But when the morning was now come, Jesus stood on the shore: but the disciples knew not that it was Jesus. Then Jesus saith unto them, Children, have ye any meat? They answered him, No.
john 21:
john 21:6
John 21:6–10 AV
And he said unto them, Cast the net on the right side of the ship, and ye shall find. They cast therefore, and now they were not able to draw it for the multitude of fishes. Therefore that disciple whom Jesus loved saith unto Peter, It is the Lord. Now when Simon Peter heard that it was the Lord, he girt his fisher’s coat unto him, (for he was naked,) and did cast himself into the sea. And the other disciples came in a little ship; (for they were not far from land, but as it were two hundred cubits,) dragging the net with fishes. As soon then as they were come to land, they saw a fire of coals there, and fish laid thereon, and bread. Jesus saith unto them, Bring of the fish which ye have now caught.
John 21:11–15 AV
Simon Peter went up, and drew the net to land full of great fishes, an hundred and fifty and three: and for all there were so many, yet was not the net broken. Jesus saith unto them, Come and dine. And none of the disciples durst ask him, Who art thou? knowing that it was the Lord. Jesus then cometh, and taketh bread, and giveth them, and fish likewise. This is now the third time that Jesus shewed himself to his disciples, after that he was risen from the dead. So when they had dined, Jesus saith to Simon Peter, Simon, son of Jonas, lovest thou me more than these? He saith unto him, Yea, Lord; thou knowest that I love thee. He saith unto him, Feed my lambs.
john 21:
John 21:16–19 AV
He saith to him again the second time, Simon, son of Jonas, lovest thou me? He saith unto him, Yea, Lord; thou knowest that I love thee. He saith unto him, Feed my sheep. He saith unto him the third time, Simon, son of Jonas, lovest thou me? Peter was grieved because he said unto him the third time, Lovest thou me? And he said unto him, Lord, thou knowest all things; thou knowest that I love thee. Jesus saith unto him, Feed my sheep. Verily, verily, I say unto thee, When thou wast young, thou girdedst thyself, and walkedst whither thou wouldest: but when thou shalt be old, thou shalt stretch forth thy hands, and another shall gird thee, and carry thee whither thou wouldest not. This spake he, signifying by what death he should glorify God. And when he had spoken this, he saith unto him, Follow me.
john 21:
Last week we looked at the disciples first encounter with Jesus after his resurection
we saw how Jesus had revieled himself to all of the disciples but thomas.
Then at the end of john 20 we see how jesus comes againn and reviels himself a second time to the disciples with thomas this time
i dont know what had happened to his disciples faith but it is after the second appearence of Jesus that peter utters them emortal words i go a fishing.
what had happenend to the faith of these disciples one minute they are on top form then the next there on the floor.
Hear we can see that even though we might see the messiah, the son of God Jesus we can still have douwpts
even the disciples had days when there faith was to say the least a little shakie.
in our reading this morning we see how peter and four other disciples discided to go fishing
I dont think it was some new age bonding adventure but it was proberly 5 disciples who’s faith had taken another knocking joining togeather in there dispear and doing something together for there was saftey in numbers.
Peter James and John, Nathaniel and Thomas
peter the stone or rock
james greek for jacob supplanter
john johovah has been gracious
thomas a twin
nathaniel gift of God
what a band of brothers and friends.
why Peter should feel that he needed to go fishing we can only guess at.
It seems from the dialog in the Bible that Jesus kept coming and going
They had been a customed of Jesus being with them at all times and this new life that they were living in was a bit frieghtning.
maybe there faith was not as strong as they thought
Peter of course had seen in his own life that he had let Jesus down at a point when he felt he shouldn’t.
we dont know what was really going through their minds so they thought they would go back to those familuar things.
may be you can see a simular trate in your life
Ive failed God so i’ll do what im good at.
this following God is to hard i’ll do what i know i can do.
Romans 11:29 AV
For the gifts and calling of God are without repentance.
WHAT does this mean ?
simply the gifts and callings that God has given you he wont change his mind about.
God has given you the gift of faith he wont take it back
God has given you the gift of healing he wont take it back
God has called you to be a worship leader he wont take it back
God has called you to be a missionary he wont take it back.
but friends if you are faithfull in that which God has called you to do he will also add to your giftings
1 Corinthians 14:12 AV
Even so ye, forasmuch as ye are zealous of spiritual gifts, seek that ye may excel to the edifying of the church.
1 cor 14:
your gifts your calling are for the edifiying or building up of the church
our Gift and calling are not so we can go around saying ive got this gift or that calling
it so the church the body of Christ can be built up.
Please tell me how going fishing was going to build up the church.
please tell me how going fishing will edify the chucrch
How can running back to our former life help the church when we have seeen the risen Christ
Jesus christ mean jesus the messiah the anointed one
Befor his death he was just Jesus but in his resurected body the disciples new something was different he was the anointed one.
a
Alone on a sea of Tiberias they were fishing without christ in the boat try to do what they had been taught to do and were good at
But after a night of not catching anything they were tierd and fed up when a call came out from the shore
children have you any meat?
This word children can be translated as lads also
Both of these terms would indicate that the one on the shore had seniority but at this point they new not who the person was.
Yes Jesus had senioroty for he was a past master at fishing maybe not with the skill of the fish but with a more difficult pray that of man.
mark
Mark 4:19 AV
And the cares of this world, and the deceitfulness of riches, and the lusts of other things entering in, choke the word, and it becometh unfruitful.
Mark 1:17 AV
And Jesus said unto them, Come ye after me, and I will make you to become fishers of men.
mark 1:
Jesus new all the ways of man for he had created him
and Jesus knew just what they had in the boat , nothing.
thier answer to the man was a swift sharp NO
They didnt want to admit that they had nothing
they had gone back to what they were good at and had failed
xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
Jesus the anointed one
simply gave them a command with a promise
a command with a prophercy
cast your nets on the right side of the boat and ye shall find.
Have you ever been doing something that you have been able to do for years and for some reason your were having no joy, and to add insult to injury someone is telling you to do the opposite of what you know to be the right way
if so you’ll know how these five men feel
on a ship as you look out in the direction of the boat the lefthand side is the port and the right is the starboard
as most people are right handed the sailboard which is the board to which you would sail or steer the boat with would be in your right hand
for you to pull up a net easy you would pull it up with your strong hand which would be your right hand so you would hold the net in your left hand and pull with your right hand .
what jesus was asking them to do was to do opposite to that which is easy
keggy handed if you like. doing things agaist the norm.
Jesus was wanting them to rely not upon there own strength but upon the promise of his word
on trusting upon the word of the man on the beach they recieved a great bounty of natural fish.
Jesus wanted his five disciples to learn another great leasson that day
that if they trusted in his word he could not only supply their needs but of them that are around them.
but the lessons hadnt finished there.
Peter realised that this miracle could only be have been brought about by Jesus christ the anointed one the messiah.
Once again Jesus had revealed himself to peter not through his eyes, for at this moment he didn’t know who this man on the beach was, but in what he had spoken and done for them.
We may not see jesus, but he can, will, and does reveal himselves to us as we listern to his voice.
His voice that is always clear and with authority.
Because Peter had heard and responded to the voice of Jesus they had seen a great miracle.
John the disciple that Jesus Loved said
John 21:7 AV
Therefore that disciple whom Jesus loved saith unto Peter, It is the Lord. Now when Simon Peter heard that it was the Lord, he girt his fisher’s coat unto him, (for he was naked,) and did cast himself into the sea.
john 21:
sometimes we can hear the voice of Jesus but we don’t recognise it
have you ever heard a voice of someone and can’t put a name to it or you see someone you know from somewhere else but you know you know them but can’t place them
Here peter was in the wrong place (doing something from his old life) and the voice was from his new life and he didn’t recognise him
sometimes it takes someone eles to tell you who that person is.
remember eli and samuel
eli should have known the voice of God but maybe he had forgotten
samuel had never heard the voice of God so didn’t know who’s the voice was
lets not forget what the voice of the master sounds like. Keep in constant contact with him
keep the lines of communication open and we want have to have someone eles to remind us of what the masters voice sounds like.
Peter knowing his nakedness clothed himself with his fishermans coat.
Jesus had found him naked and back into his old life
How could he so easliy forget the master
but this is the ficulness of man
The master is not here to lead us maybe we should go back to the things we know so well.
peter was trying to cover his nakedness
here was an attempt to cover himself with the trappings of his old life and come to jesus.
cover himself with his own righiousness
Isaiah 64:6 AV
But we are all as an unclean thing, and all our righteousnesses are as filthy rags; and we all do fade as a leaf; and our iniquities, like the wind, have taken us away.
is 64:
once recieved the holy spirit why would you want to cover yourself with anything else
last week we saw that jesus had said
john 20
John 20:22 AV
And when he had said this, he breathed on them, and saith unto them, Receive ye the Holy Ghost:
we could only come to a conclusion that a time of backsliding had taken place
we are clothed with the righteousness of God when we accecpt Jesus as Lord and Saviour
ROM 3:
ROMod
Romans 3:22 AV
Even the righteousness of God which is by faith of Jesus Christ unto all and upon all them that believe: for there is no difference:
But because of this falling away jesus had to restore and so he did
Peter came ashore and saw the fire
the fire that Jesus had prepaired
the fish that jesus had prepaired
the bread that Jesus had prepaired
esus who was the bread of life
Jesus who was the bread of life
born in the house of bread
grew up in the guarded one
die outside the habitation of peace
This Jesus
then said
John 21:10 AV
Jesus saith unto them, Bring of the fish which ye have now caught.
john 21:
jesus Said bring the fish
not the fish of his bringing
but the fish of the word of the son of God
The fish that were caught because of the word of God.
the prophecy that jesus gave
John 21:6 AV
And he said unto them, Cast the net on the right side of the ship, and ye shall find. They cast therefore, and now they were not able to draw it for the multitude of fishes.
John 20:6 AV
Then cometh Simon Peter following him, and went into the sepulchre, and seeth the linen clothes lie,
john 20:
The son od Gods word with the creative power of the Holy spirit brings the miracle.
the number of the catch was 153 and yet the net was not broken
why 153 i don’t know
is it just a random number
Jesus dosen’’t do random every thing he does and says is important
i ve heard it say that this was the amount of people that came and was ministered to by Jesus but i dont know.
what i do know is that 153 is the some of the letters added up in the Hebrew that says
I AM THE LORD THY GOD.
But what i do know is what jesus said to peter and his reply.
Peter had denied that he new Jesus on the night that Jesus was arrested 3 times so it was significant that Jesus asked peter 3 times Lovest thou me.
John 21:15 AV
So when they had dined, Jesus saith to Simon Peter, Simon, son of Jonas, lovest thou me more than these? He saith unto him, Yea, Lord; thou knowest that I love thee. He saith unto him, Feed my lambs.
john 21:15
i want to look at the two words here for love
jesus love agopah to perfect practical love

ἀγαπάω agapaō, ag-ap-ah´-o; perh. from ἄγαν agan (much) [or comp. 5689]; to love (in a social or moral sense):— (be-) love (-ed). comp. 5368

peters reply philio to be a friend
5368. φιλέω philĕō, fil-eh´-o; from 5384; to be a friend to (fond of [an indiv. or an obj.]), i.e. have affection for (denoting personal attachment, as a matter of sentiment or feeling; while 25 is wider, embracing espec. the judgment and the deliberate assent of the will as a matter of principle, duty and propriety: the two thus stand related very much as 2309 and 1014, or as 2372 and 3563 respectively; the former being chiefly of the heart and the latter of the head; spec. to kiss (as a mark of tenderness):— kiss, love.
indiv. indiv. = individual, individually
obj. obj. = object, objective, objectively
i.e. i.e. = that is
espec. espec. = especially
spec. spec. = specific, specifically
jesus say feed my lambs
jesus love agapah
peters love phileo
feed my sheep those domesticated sheep not wild ones
jesus final ask phileo
peter phileo
jesus saw that peters love was not a perfect practical love
But Jesus who had been denied three times need to hear for peters how much he loved him three times
his restoration from his old life was to work with the lambs and the sheep
Jesus who was the good shepheard new what it would take to bring the sheep and lambs to a place where they could love with that agopah love
what kind of love do we love the lord Jesus Christ with today
is it a perfect practical love that will do anything needed to do for God
or Do we have that love for the Lord Jesus that is of the phileo type just a friend
Jesus want you to be more than a friend this morning he wants you to be close that your love is just as practical as his was when he died on the cross
Jesus Gave his all for us and as he restores us he wants us to be more than just friends
lets Pray.
