when love is not Love
john 21:
john 21:6
john 21:
john 21:
Last week we looked at the disciples first encounter with Jesus after his resurection
we saw how Jesus had revieled himself to all of the disciples but thomas.
Then at the end of john 20 we see how jesus comes againn and reviels himself a second time to the disciples with thomas this time
i dont know what had happened to his disciples faith but it is after the second appearence of Jesus that peter utters them emortal words i go a fishing.
what had happenend to the faith of these disciples one minute they are on top form then the next there on the floor.
Hear we can see that even though we might see the messiah, the son of God Jesus we can still have douwpts
even the disciples had days when there faith was to say the least a little shakie.
in our reading this morning we see how peter and four other disciples discided to go fishing
I dont think it was some new age bonding adventure but it was proberly 5 disciples who’s faith had taken another knocking joining togeather in there dispear and doing something together for there was saftey in numbers.
Peter James and John, Nathaniel and Thomas
peter the stone or rock
james greek for jacob supplanter
john johovah has been gracious
thomas a twin
nathaniel gift of God
what a band of brothers and friends.
why Peter should feel that he needed to go fishing we can only guess at.
It seems from the dialog in the Bible that Jesus kept coming and going
They had been a customed of Jesus being with them at all times and this new life that they were living in was a bit frieghtning.
maybe there faith was not as strong as they thought
Peter of course had seen in his own life that he had let Jesus down at a point when he felt he shouldn’t.
we dont know what was really going through their minds so they thought they would go back to those familuar things.
may be you can see a simular trate in your life
Ive failed God so i’ll do what im good at.
this following God is to hard i’ll do what i know i can do.
WHAT does this mean ?
simply the gifts and callings that God has given you he wont change his mind about.
God has given you the gift of faith he wont take it back
God has given you the gift of healing he wont take it back
God has called you to be a worship leader he wont take it back
God has called you to be a missionary he wont take it back.
but friends if you are faithfull in that which God has called you to do he will also add to your giftings
1 cor 14:
your gifts your calling are for the edifiying or building up of the church
our Gift and calling are not so we can go around saying ive got this gift or that calling
it so the church the body of Christ can be built up.
Please tell me how going fishing was going to build up the church.
please tell me how going fishing will edify the chucrch
How can running back to our former life help the church when we have seeen the risen Christ
Jesus christ mean jesus the messiah the anointed one
Befor his death he was just Jesus but in his resurected body the disciples new something was different he was the anointed one.
a
Alone on a sea of Tiberias they were fishing without christ in the boat try to do what they had been taught to do and were good at
But after a night of not catching anything they were tierd and fed up when a call came out from the shore
children have you any meat?
This word children can be translated as lads also
Both of these terms would indicate that the one on the shore had seniority but at this point they new not who the person was.
Yes Jesus had senioroty for he was a past master at fishing maybe not with the skill of the fish but with a more difficult pray that of man.
mark
mark 1:
Jesus new all the ways of man for he had created him
and Jesus knew just what they had in the boat , nothing.
thier answer to the man was a swift sharp NO
They didnt want to admit that they had nothing
they had gone back to what they were good at and had failed
xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
Jesus the anointed one
simply gave them a command with a promise
a command with a prophercy
cast your nets on the right side of the boat and ye shall find.
Have you ever been doing something that you have been able to do for years and for some reason your were having no joy, and to add insult to injury someone is telling you to do the opposite of what you know to be the right way
if so you’ll know how these five men feel
on a ship as you look out in the direction of the boat the lefthand side is the port and the right is the starboard
as most people are right handed the sailboard which is the board to which you would sail or steer the boat with would be in your right hand
for you to pull up a net easy you would pull it up with your strong hand which would be your right hand so you would hold the net in your left hand and pull with your right hand .
what jesus was asking them to do was to do opposite to that which is easy
keggy handed if you like.
doing things agaist the norm.
Jesus was wanting them to rely not upon there own strength but upon the promise of his word
on trusting upon the word of the man on the beach they recieved a great bounty of natural fish.
Jesus wanted his five disciples to learn another great leasson that day
that if they trusted in his word he could not only supply their needs but of them that are around them.
but the lessons hadnt finished there.
Peter realised that this miracle could only be have been brought about by Jesus christ the anointed one the messiah.
Once again Jesus had revealed himself to peter not through his eyes, for at this moment he didn’t know who this man on the beach was, but in what he had spoken and done for them.
We may not see jesus, but he can, will, and does reveal himselves to us as we listern to his voice.
His voice that is always clear and with authority.
Because Peter had heard and responded to the voice of Jesus they had seen a great miracle.
John the disciple that Jesus Loved said
john 21:
sometimes we can hear the voice of Jesus but we don’t recognise it
have you ever heard a voice of someone and can’t put a name to it or you see someone you know from somewhere else but you know you know them but can’t place them
Here peter was in the wrong place (doing something from his old life) and the voice was from his new life and he didn’t recognise him
sometimes it takes someone eles to tell you who that person is.
remember eli and samuel
eli should have known the voice of God but maybe he had forgotten
samuel had never heard the voice of God so didn’t know who’s the voice was
lets not forget what the voice of the master sounds like.
Keep in constant contact with him
keep the lines of communication open and we want have to have someone eles to remind us of what the masters voice sounds like.
Peter knowing his nakedness clothed himself with his fishermans coat.
Jesus had found him naked and back into his old life
How could he so easliy forget the master
but this is the ficulness of man
The master is not here to lead us maybe we should go back to the things we know so well.
