John 12:12 NIV84
The next day the great crowd that had come for the Feast heard that Jesus was on his way to Jerusalem.
We shift from a fragrant banquet room to the busy streets of Jerusalem. All 4 Gospels record this event.
Why were the streets so busy?
Worshipers were gathering and had come in anticipation of the Passover Feast.
People wondered if Jesus was gong to show up and attend.
Historian Josephus describes one passover, somewhere between 66-70 AD, when almost 3 million people were in attendance and took part in the Passover.
The assumption in this verse is that Jesus was met on the road from Bethany by these pilgrims who had already reached Jerusalem and went out to meet Him once they heard He was approaching.
John 12:13 NIV84
They took palm branches and went out to meet him, shouting, “Hosanna!” “Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!” “Blessed is the King of Israel!”
What was the significance of the palm branches?
Leviticus 23:40
Leviticus 23:40 NIV84
On the first day you are to take choice fruit from the trees, and palm fronds, leafy branches and poplars, and rejoice before the Lord your God for seven days.
Indicates that the palm branches were used for feasts, which by the way all pointed to Jesus, and as symbols of kingship, victory, and triumph.
Hosanna means “Save us.”
“Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord” is a quote from .
Psalm 118:25–27 NIV84
O Lord, save us; O Lord, grant us success. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. From the house of the Lord we bless you. The Lord is God, and he has made his light shine upon us. With boughs in hand, join in the festal procession up to the horns of the altar.
Using the palms also indicated they were welcoming Jesus as a King. Jesus left the crowd before when they tried to make Him King.
John
John 6:15 NIV84
Jesus, knowing that they intended to come and make him king by force, withdrew again to a mountain by himself.
They were also shouting from .
Notice how these people were acquainted with Scripture and how they pointed it all to Jesus.
They acknowledge Jesus to be King of Israel.
Rightful king
Psalm
Psalm 2:6 NIV84
“I have installed my King on Zion, my holy hill.”
What is Zion?
The promised, long expected king.
Hosanna - Save us is associated with what was said to and about King Solomon.
1 Kings 1:39
1 Kings 1:39 NIV84
Zadok the priest took the horn of oil from the sacred tent and anointed Solomon. Then they sounded the trumpet and all the people shouted, “Long live King Solomon!”
In crying Hosanna, they prayed:
That His kingdom might come
That His kingdom might conquer
Revelation 6
Revelation 6:2 NIV84
I looked, and there before me was a white horse! Its rider held a bow, and he was given a crown, and he rode out as a conqueror bent on conquest.
That His kingdom might continue
Psalm
Psalm 72:17 NIV84
May his name endure forever; may it continue as long as the sun. All nations will be blessed through him, and they will call him blessed.
;
John 12:14 NIV84
Jesus found a young donkey and sat upon it, as it is written,
What is the significance of Jesus riding on a donkey?
It is the fulfillment of scripture:
Zec
Zechariah 9:9 NIV84
Rejoice greatly, O Daughter of Zion! Shout, Daughter of Jerusalem! See, your king comes to you, righteous and having salvation, gentle and riding on a donkey, on a colt, the foal of a donkey.
This was quoted in the next verse:
John 12:15 NIV84
“Do not be afraid, O Daughter of Zion; see, your king is coming, seated on a donkey’s colt.”
Jesus de-militarizes the vision of the people and declares His Messianic rule - peace, gentleness, tolerance.
If Jesus was going to rule as the people would have wanted, He would have come in pomp and on a chariot.
It was, as mentioned, foretold - Christ made sure it was as it was foretold: Jerusalem
Christ is Zion’s King
Zion’s king does and will look after Zion: the king comes to her, the king leaves her, and the king returns
The king comes slowly - the ride on a donkey is slow expressing humility
Christ comes to His people to silence their fears
John 12:16 NIV84
At first his disciples did not understand all this. Only after Jesus was glorified did they realize that these things had been written about him and that they had done these things to him.
Why did they not understand?
Ephesians 1:17–18 NIV84
I keep asking that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the glorious Father, may give you the Spirit of wisdom and revelation, so that you may know him better. I pray also that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened in order that you may know the hope to which he has called you, the riches of his glorious inheritance in the saints,
John 2:22 NIV84
After he was raised from the dead, his disciples recalled what he had said. Then they believed the Scripture and the words that Jesus had spoken.
mentions after He was raised from the dead, after the resurrection.
describes after He was glorified. What is the difference?
John 7:39 NIV84
By this he meant the Spirit, whom those who believed in him were later to receive. Up to that time the Spirit had not been given, since Jesus had not yet been glorified.
John
John 16:7 NIV84
But I tell you the truth: It is for your good that I am going away. Unless I go away, the Counselor will not come to you; but if I go, I will send him to you.
Jesus begins in an unusual way to proceed to His throne. He disappoints the people in not being a nationalistic leader. Yet He is king - and no powers of evil in any form can take that away from Him!
His Kingdom:
Drives out fear - King of Peace
His ways are of mercy, gentleness, and forgiveness
His ways will prove to be costly for Him
Lowly to die
Romans
Romans 14:17 NIV84
For the kingdom of God is not a matter of eating and drinking, but of righteousness, peace and joy in the Holy Spirit,
His kingdom is divisive
Isaiah 45:4 NIV84
For the sake of Jacob my servant, of Israel my chosen, I summon you by name and bestow on you a title of honor, though you do not acknowledge me.
There are two types of people in this crowd: Some will welcome Him with enthusiasm; some will plot His downfall.
Light confronts darkness.
Life encounters death.
John 12:17 NIV84
Now the crowd that was with him when he called Lazarus from the tomb and raised him from the dead continued to spread the word.
The size of the crowd kept increasing. Testimony is a valid way to share the love of our Lord. It will always disturb those that oppose the Lord just as it did the Pharisees.
John 12:18 NIV84
Many people, because they had heard that he had given this miraculous sign, went out to meet him.
A day of great popular acclaim by little spiritual perception.
The people were comprised of those that witnessed the miracle and those that heard about it.
John 12:19 NIV84
So the Pharisees said to one another, “See, this is getting us nowhere. Look how the whole world has gone after him!”
There is much to admire about how the WORD of God interprets the WORK of God.
What is written will help us understand what is done, and what is done will help us understand what is written.
Scripture is fulfilled everyday.
