All 4 Gospels record this event.
Why were the streets so busy?
Worshipers were gathering and had come in anticipation of the Passover Feast.
People wondered if Jesus was gong to show up and attend.
Historian Josephus describes one passover, somewhere between 66-70 AD, when almost 3 million people were in attendance and took part in the Passover.

If Jesus was going to rule as the people would have wanted, He would have come in pomp and on a chariot.
It was, as mentioned, foretold - Christ made sure it was as it was foretold: Jerusalem
Christ is Zion’s King
Zion’s king does and will look after Zion: the king comes to her, the king leaves her, and the king returns
The king comes slowly - the ride on a donkey is slow expressing humility
Christ comes to His people to silence their fears
Why did they not understand?
mentions after He was raised from the dead, after the resurrection.
describes after He was glorified.
What is the difference?
John
Jesus begins in an unusual way to proceed to His throne.
He disappoints the people in not being a nationalistic leader.
Yet He is king - and no powers of evil in any form can take that away from Him!
His Kingdom:
Drives out fear - King of Peace
His ways are of mercy, gentleness, and forgiveness
His ways will prove to be costly for Him
Lowly to die
Romans

There are two types of people in this crowd: Some will welcome Him with enthusiasm; some will plot His downfall.
Light confronts darkness.
Life encounters death.
The size of the crowd kept increasing.
Testimony is a valid way to share the love of our Lord.
It will always disturb those that oppose the Lord just as it did the Pharisees.
A day of great popular acclaim by little spiritual perception.
The people were comprised of those that witnessed the miracle and those that heard about it.
There is much to admire about how the WORD of God interprets the WORK of God.
What is written will help us understand what is done, and what is done will help us understand what is written.
