Intro: Today, we’re gonna continue through our journey of 2 Samuel, and this day has been a long day coming for David, after many years and lots of valleys, David is about to become the King of all of Israel
(Prop) And today we’re gonna walk though this passage, and then we’re gonna look at it from a spiritual sense and answer the question “What does it look like when Jesus becomes the king of our heart”
We’re gonna read the story about David taking the throne
We’re gonna talk about what a life looks like when Jesus takes the throne
2 Corinthians 5:17 ESV
17 Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come.
2 Corinthians 5:17
“When that revolutionary change takes place, surely there ought to be some evidences of it.
(Prop) And today we’re gonna walk though this passage, and then we’re gonna look at it from a spiritual sense and answer the question “What does it look like when Jesus becomes the true king of your heart”
So there’s gonna be a duel purpose in this passage...
People who are followers of Jesus - This will be a reminder of what our lives should be producing
For people who don’t know Jesus - This is an invitation of what you could experience if you made Jesus your personal king
We’re gonna read the story about David taking the throne
We’re gonna talk about what a life looks like when Jesus takes the throne
2 Samuel 5:1–3 ESV
1 Then all the tribes of Israel came to David at Hebron and said, “Behold, we are your bone and flesh. 2 In times past, when Saul was king over us, it was you who led out and brought in Israel. And the Lord said to you, ‘You shall be shepherd of my people Israel, and you shall be prince over Israel.’ ” 3 So all the elders of Israel came to the king at Hebron, and King David made a covenant with them at Hebron before the Lord, and they anointed David king over Israel.
2 Samuel 5:1–3 ESV

Wow It’s been a long time coming, but it’s finally here! Now some of you might say “wait, I thought he was already anointed king…well kinda…up to this point David, wasn’t the king of the of all the tribes of Israel, He was only the king of one of the tribes of Israel...the tribe of Judah...and the rest of the tribes had all been following the counter-fit king who lost his life Ishbosheth, but now their ready to crown David their king
So remember…up to this point David, wasn’t the king of the of all the tribes of Israel, He was only the king of one of the tribes that tribe of Judah...Now up to this point they had all been following the counter-fit king who lost his life Ishbosheth, but now their ready to crown David their king
So remember…up to this point David, wasn’t the king of the of all the tribes of Israel, He was only the king of one of the tribes that tribe of Judah...Now up to this point they had all been following the counter-fit king who lost his life Ishbosheth, but now their ready to crown David their king
Now up to this point they had all been following the counter-fit king who lost his life Ishbosheth
Insight: Sometimes in order for you to experience the reign of the true king, God will first remove the other king
App: Do you know that God will allow that to happen in our lives as well…he will allow your Fake king to die, and your world to crumble…because sometimes the only way you’re gonna that He’s the one you need
Here’s a question why are these guys choosing David?
There are 4 factors the bible gives to David being the clear choice for King
He was God’s choice
Do you remember when Saul crashed and burned and Samuel was moping and God said, “Stop grieving, fill your horn with oil and go to Jesse’s house…I provided for myself a king among his sons…Samuel went and searched among his sons, could’t find one…and then found out their was one more…the youngest, probably no older then 13…and we read this
1 Samuel 16:1 ESV
1 The Lord said to Samuel, “How long will you grieve over Saul, since I have rejected him from being king over Israel? Fill your horn with oil, and go. I will send you to Jesse the Bethlehemite, for I have provided for myself a king among his sons.”
1
1 Samuel 16:12 ESV
12 And he sent and brought him in. Now he was ruddy and had beautiful eyes and was handsome. And the Lord said, “Arise, anoint him, for this is he.”
1 SAM 16:1
1 Samuel 16:12 ESV
12 And he sent and brought him in. Now he was ruddy and had beautiful eyes and was handsome. And the Lord said, “Arise, anoint him, for this is he.”
Even though David’s own father didn’t think much of him the truth is God chose him, and when God choses someone man can’t un-chose them
He was Family
Notice they said in verse 1 that David was” flesh and bone” in other words not only was he an Israelite but through his marriage to Saul’s daughter Michal, he’s become connected to the royal family
Here’s the 3rd factor
He was a proven leader
They said to David in verse 2 “Though Saul was the king, You were the leader”
Remember when Saul promoted David to be his general…do you remember what it said…look
1 Samuel 18:13 ESV
13 So Saul removed him from his presence and made him a commander of a thousand. And he went out and came in before the people.
1 sam
1 Samuel 18:30 ESV
30 Then the commanders of the Philistines came out to battle, and as often as they came out David had more success than all the servants of Saul, so that his name was highly esteemed.
1 sam 18
So their was a clearly seen gifting in David’s life to lead…and fyi this will always be growing and developing as someone responds to God’s call
App: This is always an important thing to remember, If God calls you to something…He will also provide a clearly seen gifting…without the gifting, you might not have the calling
Let others determine if you have the gifting - not you’re mom, not you, not you’re closest friends…I think about the fact that even David’s enemies - Saul and Abner were like “Dude, your the real deal”
He was a man marked by mercy
We saw it with Saul, we saw it with Abner, We saw it with Ishbosheth…David was a merciful Man, and merciful men make great leaders...
App: there have been many people that I had pegged for ministry, they had the look, and the gifts, but they didn’t have the mercy…people who lack mercy don’t uselessly last in mystery... and if they do they become obstacles
So David becomes the new king, and the author here gives us a time stamp…look
2 Samuel 5:4–5 ESV
4 David was thirty years old when he began to reign, and he reigned forty years. 5 At Hebron he reigned over Judah seven years and six months, and at Jerusalem he reigned over all Israel and Judah thirty-three years.
2 Samuel 5:4 ESV
4 David was thirty years old when he began to reign, and he reigned forty years.
2 sam 4
2 sam 5:4-
Alright so think about this...most scholars believe that Samuel anointed David to be the king of Israel when he was around 13 years old...and now that he’s almost 40 (37 and some change) he’s finally sitting on the throne…It only took about 25 years
App: This is a reminder for us that God is always faithful to keep his promises, but his timing might not be the same as ours
…you better Ask the Lord to give you patients
I always think about this in terms of Jesus’ coming - If you were to time it out from God’s first promise of the messiah to the arrival of Jesus it comes in at around 4000 yrs…with the final 400 yrs being a time when no prophet spoke at all…and just when all hope was lost…He came
Here’s the point - If God wanted too, he would have totally speed the whole process up…but he didn’t, so there must have been something valuable about the wait...
We live in a day and age where we don’t have to wait for anything…reports have shown the since 2000 our attention spans have shrunk by a quarter from around 12 seconds to about 8 seconds…and then reckon a goldfish has an attention span of about 9 seconds…all of that speaks to an issue with waiting
Isaiah 40:31 ESV
31 but they who wait for the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings like eagles; they shall run and not be weary; they shall walk and not faint.
Ish 40:31
Ish 40:31
You know what happens when you submit to the Lords process…You grow up…theirs a reason kids arn’t given drivers licenses
Now David’s been anointed and crown king…and now we get to read about a couple of his conquests
2 Samuel 5:6–10 ESV
6 And the king and his men went to Jerusalem against the Jebusites, the inhabitants of the land, who said to David, “You will not come in here, but the blind and the lame will ward you off”—thinking, “David cannot come in here.” 7 Nevertheless, David took the stronghold of Zion, that is, the city of David. 8 And David said on that day, “Whoever would strike the Jebusites, let him get up the water shaft to attack ‘the lame and the blind,’ who are hated by David’s soul.” Therefore it is said, “The blind and the lame shall not come into the house.” 9 And David lived in the stronghold and called it the city of David. And David built the city all around from the Millo inward. 10 And David became greater and greater, for the Lord, the God of hosts, was with him.
2 sam 5:6-10
So the first order of business for David is he go and take Jerusalem which at this time was a stronghold occupied by the Jebusites...
Now perhaps there are some people who say “See this is I don’t believe in God, because what kind of God would go around stealing occupied land and killing other nations” - Well I’ll give you 3 reasons why God allows land to be occupied by Israel
The Jebusites were wicked people, they were a tribe of the Canaanites…and they were guilty of terrible sins. They were burning their children as sacrifices to the god Molech. They were having sexual relations with animals (). They hated the Hebrew people and would have destroyed them. This would have prohibited the Messiah, the future Savior for all mankind, from being born into the world, for God promised that He would be a descendant of Abraham
The Jebusites were wicked people, they were a tribe of the Cainnanites who
“guilty of terrible sins. They were burning their children as sacrifices to the god Molech. They were having sexual relations with animals (). They hated the Hebrew people and would have destroyed them. This would have prohibited the Messiah, the future Savior for all mankind, from being born into the world, for God promised that He would be a descendant of Abraham.”
God had told Promised this land to God’s people…and because he created it, he gets to say who it goes too - “If you panted some plants in your back yard...You can pluck those plants up whenever you want. Your neighbor does not have that right because those plants do not belong to him. The same is true with God. People belong to God, and He can end a life (or lives) whenever and however He thinks best.”
Third, keep in mind that God patiently allowed the people of Canaan more than 400 years to repent (). Had they repented like the people of Nineveh did (), God would have spared them
“Third, keep in mind that God patiently allowed the people of Canaan more than 400 years to repent (). Had they repented like the people of Nineveh did (), God would have spared them ().
Jeremiah 18:7–8 ESV
7 If at any time I declare concerning a nation or a kingdom, that I will pluck up and break down and destroy it, 8 and if that nation, concerning which I have spoken, turns from its evil, I will relent of the disaster that I intended to do to it.
Now obveously they thought Jerusalem was impenetrable, and they began to mock David and his men, see Jerusalem was a walled city on a hill, and was a spring around the backside of the city that made it a nightmare for attackers…so they said “David’s so weak our lame and blind could beat him”…in other words “let that fool try and come in our city is so well protected that we solders could take the day off” but what they didn’t take into account was that there was a water shaft that David somehow knew about…and this would be the way David made it into the city…and it’s been said that this water has actually been discovered and it’s called the warren shaft named after a guy who’s last name was warren
But the secret to David’s success wasn’t military strategy, It wasn’t that he wasn’t the best fighter - David’s plans succeeded because as v. 10 says “The Lord of Host was with him”
App: Do you know who else the Lord of host is with? His people
In the good times…but also in the hard time
I remember this same man saying this..
Psalm 23:4 ESV
4 Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me.
I Pray that we as believers would always remember that God is with his people…And he’s with us…There’s always a reason to be hopeful and confident
2 Samuel 5:11–12 ESV
11 And Hiram king of Tyre sent messengers to David, and cedar trees, also carpenters and masons who built David a house. 12 And David knew that the Lord had established him king over Israel, and that he had exalted his kingdom for the sake of his people Israel.
So this speaks of David’s influence and importance…that Kings of other nations wanted to honor him…it speaks of the fact that not only was David good at war, but he was also good at diplomacy
And then it says “And David knew”…in other word’s there were some things that were settled in his heart
He knew he was called by God
He knew that the kingdom belonged to God
He knew God wanted to use him as a channel to bless His people. It was not for David’s sake that he was lifted up, but for the sake of His people Israel.
App: I remember some of the best advice someone ever gave me in ministry was “Joe, Know who called you, know who it belongs too, and know whats it’s all about…and if you keep the main things the main things…you’ll be just fine”
And just as we think “can this man of God do no wrong!” we read this...
2 Samuel 5:13–15 ESV
13 And David took more concubines and wives from Jerusalem, after he came from Hebron, and more sons and daughters were born to David. 14 And these are the names of those who were born to him in Jerusalem: Shammua, Shobab, Nathan, Solomon, 15 Ibhar, Elishua, Nepheg, Japhia,
13-15
And it goes on to mention 3 more names...Elishama, Eliada, Eliphelet.
Now, understand that this was sin…this was in direct disobedience to Duet 17:17 Neither shall he multiply wives for himself, lest his heart turn away.
Certainly David (and everyone else) saw these many children as God’s sign of blessing upon David and his many marriages. Yet most of the trouble to come in David’s life came from his relationships with women and problems with his children.
b. More sons and daughters were born to David: Certainly David (and everyone else) saw these many children as God’s sign of blessing upon David and his many marriages. Yet most of the trouble to come in David’s life came from his relationships with women and problems with his children.
Notice it’s in the quite and successful time that David slipped up
David Guzik says “It is often true that the seeds to our future trouble are sown in times of great success and prosperity. In some ways, David handled trials better than success”
David Guzik says “It is often true that the seeds to our future trouble are sown in times of great success and prosperity. In some ways, David handled trials better than success”
i. It is often true that the seeds to our future trouble are sown in times of great success and prosperity. In some ways, David handled trials better than success.
App: Your future will be dramatically on 2 things...Who you marry…and how you handle success…those are times you have your guard up the most
Yoke yourself with the wrong person…your asking for a life time of difficulty
Who you marry
Situational Christians arn’t strong Christians
Now we see another one of David’s conquests...
2 Samuel 5:17–19 ESV
17 When the Philistines heard that David had been anointed king over Israel, all the Philistines went up to search for David. But David heard of it and went down to the stronghold. 18 Now the Philistines had come and spread out in the Valley of Rephaim. 19 And David inquired of the Lord, “Shall I go up against the Philistines? Will you give them into my hand?” And the Lord said to David, “Go up, for I will certainly give the Philistines into your hand.”
2 sam 5:17-19
So here comes a familiar enemy, the philistines, but notice that David didn’t go seeking them, they heard of David’s accession to the throne and they realize that this man who for the last 7 and a half years was and Ally of sorts has now become the uncontested king of their greatest enemy…and so they attack...
17-19
What Does David do? He prays - And would you notice, that before he even begins to engage the enemy…He’s asking God if he should.
App: There are many who just do what they want to do, and then when things get tough later, the start asking for God’s advice...
Saul did that - Remember in when Saul made his take this rash vow in their pursuit of the philistines
1 Samuel 14:24 ESV
24 And the men of Israel had been hard pressed that day, so Saul had laid an oath on the people, saying, “Cursed be the man who eats food until it is evening and I am avenged on my enemies.” So none of the people had tasted food.
1 sam 14:24
But the battle didn’t go well so he inquired of God...
1 Samuel 14:37 ESV
37 And Saul inquired of God, “Shall I go down after the Philistines? Will you give them into the hand of Israel?” But he did not answer him that day.
1 sam 14:
Why did God not answer? Because God speaks to people that are willing to listen…If you don’t listen don’t be surprised if your not hearing him...
Now we see David defeat the Philistines...
2 Samuel 5:20–21 ESV
20 And David came to Baal-perazim, and David defeated them there. And he said, “The Lord has broken through my enemies before me like a breaking flood.” Therefore the name of that place is called Baal-perazim. 21 And the Philistines left their idols there, and David and his men carried them away.
Wow, what a contrast here...Here we see David (informed and directed by the Lord) defeats the philistines with such overwhelming Force that the place becomes defined by that event…Baal Perazim literally mean “The Lord broke forth”…and then you have the Philistines who had to carry their God’s to the fight and prop them up…when the battle really broke out, things got really real and those philistines fled leaving behind those Idols to be disposed of by David
Insight: You know, we make God’s out of a lot of things, Our bank account, Our status, Our bodies, but when stuff really goes down…when you soul is required of you, those things will be left behind, like these Idols were…don’t worship things that can’t save you
So it was a blowout…but the enemy is obviously relentless, and here they come again...
2 Samuel 5:22–25 ESV
22 And the Philistines came up yet again and spread out in the Valley of Rephaim. 23 And when David inquired of the Lord, he said, “You shall not go up; go around to their rear, and come against them opposite the balsam trees. 24 And when you hear the sound of marching in the tops of the balsam trees, then rouse yourself, for then the Lord has gone out before you to strike down the army of the Philistines.” 25 And David did as the Lord commanded him, and struck down the Philistines from Geba to Gezer.
2 Samuel 5:22 ESV
22 And the Philistines came up yet again and spread out in the Valley of Rephaim.
This is how much the enemy hated David…they didn’t care about the fact that they had just been defeated…they were relentless
Insight: Thats a good discription of Satan - Don’t think that just because you defeated him yesterday he’s not gonna try and attack today…Don’t ever live off of the victories of yesterday…you need a fresh equipping today…
So what did David do?
2 Samuel 5:23 ESV
23 And when David inquired of the Lord, he said, “You shall not go up; go around to their rear, and come against them opposite the balsam trees.
2 Samuel 5:23–25 ESV
23 And when David inquired of the Lord, he said, “You shall not go up; go around to their rear, and come against them opposite the balsam trees. 24 And when you hear the sound of marching in the tops of the balsam trees, then rouse yourself, for then the Lord has gone out before you to strike down the army of the Philistines.” 25 And David did as the Lord commanded him, and struck down the Philistines from Geba to Gezer.
2 Samuel 5:23–24 ESV
23 And when David inquired of the Lord, he said, “You shall not go up; go around to their rear, and come against them opposite the balsam trees. 24 And when you hear the sound of marching in the tops of the balsam trees, then rouse yourself, for then the Lord has gone out before you to strike down the army of the Philistines.”
2 sam 5:23-
2 sam 5:
I love this, because what we see about David is he wasn’t relying on past experience to win this battle, he knew that his enemy was smart enough to know and adapt, and so He inquires of the Lord again…and we see that was a good thing that he did because God had a completely different plan
I love this, because what we see about David is he wasn’t relying on past experience to win this battle, he knew that his enemy was smart enough to know and adapt, and so He inquires of the Lord again…and we see that was a good thing that he did because God had a completely different plan
App: Bad things can happen when we trust in our previous experience more then the Lord…We need daily encounters with the Lord…thats why daily disciplines are so important…Read your bible daily, Seek God’s will Daily, Repent of Sin Daily
Look what the Lord says…I love it
2 Samuel 5:24 ESV
24 And when you hear the sound of marching in the tops of the balsam trees, then rouse yourself, for then the Lord has gone out before you to strike down the army of the Philistines.”

2 sam 5
He says “When you hear the of heaven marching…don’t hesitate, don’t over think it, advance quickly because that gonna be how the Lord gives you victory”
2 SAM 5
He says “When you hear the of heaven marching…don’t hesitate, don’t over think it, advance quickly because that gonna be how the Lord gives you victory”
Insight: I am convinced that those holy moments still happen, but we have become so accustomed to “steady as she goes Christianity” that comfortable and safe, where theres no risk that by the time we’re ready to act, the Lord has moved on...
App: If the Lord is doing something in your life…Advance upon that thing quickly, don’t wait, don’t over think it…Just do it
Love this...
2 Samuel 5:25 ESV
25 And David did as the Lord commanded him, and struck down the Philistines from Geba to Gezer.
2 Sam 5:
You know whats great…in many of the great accomplishments of the hero’s of faith theres a verse like this
Genesis 7:9 ESV
9 two and two, male and female, went into the ark with Noah, as God had commanded Noah.
Gen 7
Genesis 21:4 ESV
4 And Abraham circumcised his son Isaac when he was eight days old, as God had commanded him.
Gen
Exodus 7:6 ESV
6 Moses and Aaron did so; they did just as the Lord commanded them.
Exodus
We talk about men like this and we say “Lord make us like then! Lord we need your church to have men and women with that same power!” look at the end of the Day, the Lord Spoke and They didn’t over think it, they took God’s word as truth…and they obeyed it
Insight: Understand that simple obedience could yelled some spectacular results…they struck down their greatest nemesis the Philistines from Geba to Gezer…thats About 20 miles worth of victory
So thats the chapter, we’ve seen David crowned as undisputed king of Israel, and the fruit of that but now let’s talk how this is a great picture of what a life should look like when Jesus is crowned undisputed king of your life...
When Jesus is king…Strong holds will fall
When Became king, that stronghold that seemed unbreakable was and that city that was once a stain on the people of God, became the city of David - In that same way when Jesus becomes the true uncontested king of our lives, those things that habits that you thought you could never break are breaking, those addictions that you thought you could never shake are being shaken, and things that you thought might be your shame forever can become a crown of God’s grace
If you look at the gospels, and you see Jesus healing the blind and the lame and the demon possessed you have walk away with a clear understanding that Jesus is a stronghold breaker...
When Jesus is king…His territory will expand
Look at verse 10 again..It said that David kingdom became greater and greater - And thats the truth about a person who give Jesus the throne in their lives…that will be evidenced by an increase of his kingdom in all facets of that persons life
App: What that means is that if Jesus truly is the king of your heart…You will not play “keep away” with any part of your life
He’s lord of your relationships
He’s Lord of speech
He’s Lord of your money
He’s Lord of your time
He’s Lord of your Body
Question: Is Jesus your king? Is his territory increasing?
When Jesus is king…opposition will come
Think about this...Philistines had been fine to let Jerusalem exist when Ishbosheth was king, But when David came to the throne they attacked and the attacks were widespread and continuous - Thats the same with us, don’t be surprised if when you fully surrender to God’s kingdom, the attacks don’t become more viscous, more consistent, and from ever area
They attacks could be coming because the king is on his rightful throne
And remember the attack was continuous…they kept coming back
“if you have crowned Jesus Christ as Lord, you are in for a life of constant warfare. The devil didn’t have to bother too much about you before, but if you become determined never to accept a peaceful co-existence with the enemy on any point, if you become concerned that the Lord might create in you a clean heart, that He might give you a blessed experience of deliverance by the power of the indwelling Christ, then I say to you that such holy living is a menace to the powers of darkness” A.R.
This lends itself to the next point...
In this twentieth century the church desperately needs men like that, those who have so submitted to the Lord Jesus that they have a testimony of deliverance from sin.
In this twentieth century the church desperately needs men like that, those who have so submitted to the Lord Jesus that they have a testimony of deliverance from sin.
The sovereignty of Christ in the believer’s life is counterattacked at every point, persistently and relentlessly. But the sovereignty of Christ is also communicated to the Christian by the Lord Himself.
This lends itself to the next point...
Warfare is a real thing, and don’t be surprised if as you really start putting points up on the board for the king of God
What am I to do in the midst of the battle? How am I to face an enemy who is too powerful for me? How am I to deal with all the devil’s besetting temptations that spread themselves around my life? Now I hope you[…]”
So what should that produce in us?
So what should that produce in us?
When Jesus is king…We will seek his guidence
Think about this, David was attacked, though he was very accomplished and could have gone out in the power of his flesh, but no, he inquired of the Lord v.19…and then when the enemy attacked again, he didn’t just rely upon what happened last time…he sought the Lord again v.23 - And in that same way, you and I are called to have the same moment by moment dependence upon the Lord and his leading
App: Here’s the truth, Life is very complicated....it’s kinda unpredictable
When I was young, I really wanted to be a “mr. fix it kinda guy”…and then I realized something…I really hate fixing things…I’ve spent too many late nights under a facet with a dissembled garbage disposal looking back at me essentially saying “see I told you didn’t have tools (both physically and Emotionally) to fix me…so as I’ve gotten older, I’ve learned to defer to someone else
App: How much do we want to do that with guiding our lives...There’s no one more capable of guiding your life then Jesus
There’s no one more capable of guidine
Through out all of the different stages of life, the bible makes it simple for us…Take it too the Lord in Prayer
When Jesus is king…We will obey him
Read that last verse with me again...
2 Samuel 5:25 ESV
25 And David did as the Lord commanded him, and struck down the Philistines from Geba to Gezer.
You know whats great…in many of the great accomplishments of the hero’s of faith theres a verse like this

Genesis 21:4 ESV

Insight: Understand that simple obedience could yelled some spectacular results…they struck down their greatest nemesis the Philistines from Geba to Gezer…thats About 20 miles worth of victory
In conclusion
Is Jesus your king?
Are the strong holds falling?
Is his kingdom expanding
Is his kingdom expanding?
Are you seen as a threat by the enemy?
How’s your prayer life?
Are you seen as a threat by the enemy?
Are you obedient?
Now For believers - It’s important to remember not about perfection as much as it is about direction…
Now for anyone else here…do you what this?
Prayer - “God I know that I have sinned against you and deserve punishment, but i believe Jesus christ took the punishment that I deserve…so that through faith in him I could be forgiven, I receive your offer of forgiveness and put my trust in for salvation…I accept as my personal savior…thank you for your wonderful grace and forgiveness and the gift of eternal life…amen”
