Prayer for Moms
Pray for the Meraz’s
Intro: Today, we’re gonna continue through our journey of 2 Samuel, and this day has been a long day coming for David, after many years and lots of valleys, David is about to become the King of all of Israel
Intro: Today, we’re gonna continue through our journey of 2 Samuel, and this day has been a long day coming for David, after many years and lots of valleys, David is about to become the King of all of Israel
(Prop) And today we’re gonna walk though this passage, and then we’re gonna look at it from a spiritual sense and answer the question “What does it look like when Jesus becomes the king of our heart”
We’re gonna read the story about David taking the throne
We’re gonna talk about what a life looks like when Jesus takes the throne
2 Corinthians 5:17
“When that revolutionary change takes place, surely there ought to be some evidences of it.
(Prop) And today we’re gonna walk though this passage, and then we’re gonna look at it from a spiritual sense and answer the question “What does it look like when Jesus becomes the true king of your heart”
So there’s gonna be a duel purpose in this passage...
People who are followers of Jesus - This will be a reminder of what our lives should be producing
For people who don’t know Jesus - This is an invitation of what you could experience if you made Jesus your personal king
We’re gonna read the story about David taking the throne
We’re gonna talk about what a life looks like when Jesus takes the throne
Wow It’s been a long time coming, but it’s finally here!
Now some of you might say “wait, I thought he was already anointed king…well kinda…up to this point David, wasn’t the king of the of all the tribes of Israel, He was only the king of one of the tribes of Israel...the tribe of Judah...and the rest of the tribes had all been following the counter-fit king who lost his life Ishbosheth, but now their ready to crown David their king
So remember…up to this point David, wasn’t the king of the of all the tribes of Israel, He was only the king of one of the tribes that tribe of Judah...Now up to this point they had all been following the counter-fit king who lost his life Ishbosheth, but now their ready to crown David their king
So remember…up to this point David, wasn’t the king of the of all the tribes of Israel, He was only the king of one of the tribes that tribe of Judah...Now up to this point they had all been following the counter-fit king who lost his life Ishbosheth, but now their ready to crown David their king
Now up to this point they had all been following the counter-fit king who lost his life Ishbosheth
Insight: Sometimes in order for you to experience the reign of the true king, God will first remove the other king
App: Do you know that God will allow that to happen in our lives as well…he will allow your Fake king to die, and your world to crumble…because sometimes the only way you’re gonna that He’s the one you need
Here’s a question why are these guys choosing David?
There are 4 factors the bible gives to David being the clear choice for King
He was God’s choice
Do you remember when Saul crashed and burned and Samuel was moping and God said, “Stop grieving, fill your horn with oil and go to Jesse’s house…I provided for myself a king among his sons…Samuel went and searched among his sons, could’t find one…and then found out their was one more…the youngest, probably no older then 13…and we read this
1
1 SAM 16:1
Even though David’s own father didn’t think much of him the truth is God chose him, and when God choses someone man can’t un-chose them
He was Family
Notice they said in verse 1 that David was” flesh and bone” in other words not only was he an Israelite but through his marriage to Saul’s daughter Michal, he’s become connected to the royal family
Here’s the 3rd factor
He was a proven leader
They said to David in verse 2 “Though Saul was the king, You were the leader”
Remember when Saul promoted David to be his general…do you remember what it said…look
1 sam
1 sam 18
So their was a clearly seen gifting in David’s life to lead…and fyi this will always be growing and developing as someone responds to God’s call
App: This is always an important thing to remember, If God calls you to something…He will also provide a clearly seen gifting…without the gifting, you might not have the calling
Let others determine if you have the gifting - not you’re mom, not you, not you’re closest friends…I think about the fact that even David’s enemies - Saul and Abner were like “Dude, your the real deal”
He was a man marked by mercy
We saw it with Saul, we saw it with Abner, We saw it with Ishbosheth…David was a merciful Man, and merciful men make great leaders...
App: there have been many people that I had pegged for ministry, they had the look, and the gifts, but they didn’t have the mercy…people who lack mercy don’t uselessly last in mystery... and if they do they become obstacles
So David becomes the new king, and the author here gives us a time stamp…look
2 sam 4
2 sam 5:4-
Alright so think about this...most scholars believe that Samuel anointed David to be the king of Israel when he was around 13 years old...and now that he’s almost 40 (37 and some change) he’s finally sitting on the throne…It only took about 25 years
App: This is a reminder for us that God is always faithful to keep his promises, but his timing might not be the same as ours
…you better Ask the Lord to give you patients
I always think about this in terms of Jesus’ coming - If you were to time it out from God’s first promise of the messiah to the arrival of Jesus it comes in at around 4000 yrs…with the final 400 yrs being a time when no prophet spoke at all…and just when all hope was lost…He came
Here’s the point - If God wanted too, he would have totally speed the whole process up…but he didn’t, so there must have been something valuable about the wait...
We live in a day and age where we don’t have to wait for anything…reports have shown the since 2000 our attention spans have shrunk by a quarter from around 12 seconds to about 8 seconds…and then reckon a goldfish has an attention span of about 9 seconds…all of that speaks to an issue with waiting
Ish 40:31
Ish 40:31
You know what happens when you submit to the Lords process…You grow up…theirs a reason kids arn’t given drivers licenses
Now David’s been anointed and crown king…and now we get to read about a couple of his conquests
2 sam 5:6-10
So the first order of business for David is he go and take Jerusalem which at this time was a stronghold occupied by the Jebusites...
Now perhaps there are some people who say “See this is I don’t believe in God, because what kind of God would go around stealing occupied land and killing other nations” - Well I’ll give you 3 reasons why God allows land to be occupied by Israel
The Jebusites were wicked people, they were a tribe of the Canaanites…and they were guilty of terrible sins.
They were burning their children as sacrifices to the god Molech.
They were having sexual relations with animals ().
They hated the Hebrew people and would have destroyed them.
This would have prohibited the Messiah, the future Savior for all mankind, from being born into the world, for God promised that He would be a descendant of Abraham

God had told Promised this land to God’s people…and because he created it, he gets to say who it goes too - “If you panted some plants in your back yard...You can pluck those plants up whenever you want.
Your neighbor does not have that right because those plants do not belong to him.
The same is true with God.
People belong to God, and He can end a life (or lives) whenever and however He thinks best.”
Third, keep in mind that God patiently allowed the people of Canaan more than 400 years to repent ().
Had they repented like the people of Nineveh did (), God would have spared them
“Third, keep in mind that God patiently allowed the people of Canaan more than 400 years to repent ().

Now obveously they thought Jerusalem was impenetrable, and they began to mock David and his men, see Jerusalem was a walled city on a hill, and was a spring around the backside of the city that made it a nightmare for attackers…so they said “David’s so weak our lame and blind could beat him”…in other words “let that fool try and come in our city is so well protected that we solders could take the day off” but what they didn’t take into account was that there was a water shaft that David somehow knew about…and this would be the way David made it into the city…and it’s been said that this water has actually been discovered and it’s called the warren shaft named after a guy who’s last name was warren
But the secret to David’s success wasn’t military strategy, It wasn’t that he wasn’t the best fighter - David’s plans succeeded because as v. 10 says “The Lord of Host was with him”
App: Do you know who else the Lord of host is with?
His people
In the good times…but also in the hard time
I remember this same man saying this..
I Pray that we as believers would always remember that God is with his people…And he’s with us…There’s always a reason to be hopeful and confident
So this speaks of David’s influence and importance…that Kings of other nations wanted to honor him…it speaks of the fact that not only was David good at war, but he was also good at diplomacy
And then it says “And David knew”…in other word’s there were some things that were settled in his heart
He knew he was called by God
He knew that the kingdom belonged to God
He knew God wanted to use him as a channel to bless His people.
It was not for David’s sake that he was lifted up, but for the sake of His people Israel.
App: I remember some of the best advice someone ever gave me in ministry was “Joe, Know who called you, know who it belongs too, and know whats it’s all about…and if you keep the main things the main things…you’ll be just fine”
And just as we think “can this man of God do no wrong!”
we read this...
13-15
And it goes on to mention 3 more names...Elishama, Eliada, Eliphelet.
Now, understand that this was sin…this was in direct disobedience to Duet 17:17 Neither shall he multiply wives for himself, lest his heart turn away.
Certainly David (and everyone else) saw these many children as God’s sign of blessing upon David and his many marriages.
Yet most of the trouble to come in David’s life came from his relationships with women and problems with his children.
