Intro: We’re continuing our journey through 2nd Samuel…and the life of David
"It is better to fail in a cause that will ultimately succeed than to succeed in a cause that will ultimately fail."
In this life you will have trial’s and tribulations…but always remember the victory has already been won in Jesus
(Prop) We’re continuing in our walk through the life and the reign of King David…and today we’re gonna see a catalog of David’s victories…and in that we will have a chance to talk about the victories that our anointed king Jesus has won for us
He wanted to bring the Ark (A representing of the presence and glory of God) to his new city of operations Jerusalem…now he didn’t get it all right, but his heart was right
Before we start…I to remind you that last week I made mention of the fact that some scholars believe that chapter 8 actually comes before chapter 7, because chapter 7:1 says “and God gave David rest form all of his enemies” but there are other scholars who believe that the victories mentioned in chapter 8 flow out of the promises that God made in chapter 7…and thats where I stand as well…chapter 8 flows out of chapter 7...
He wanted to bring the Ark (A representing of the presence and glory of God) to his new city of operations Jerusalem…now he didn’t get it all right, but his heart was right
The layout
Then last week He wanted to build the Lord’s house…thats a good heart again
David’s victories v.1-5
David’s decisions v.6-18
David’s victories
David’s victories
So David lunches out to do God’s work propelled by God’s grace and faithfulness…and let’s look at the victories that came about…and first it starts with Israel’s greatest enemy
1 After this David defeated the Philistines and subdued them, and David took Metheg-ammah out of the hand of the Philistines.
Notice the first 2 words “After this” - We have to ask the question “After what?…After God had made a promise to David...
Here’s God’s promise to David
9 And I have been with you wherever you went and have cut off all your enemies from before you. And I will make for you a great name, like the name of the great ones of the earth.
10 And I will appoint a place for my people Israel and will plant them, so that they may dwell in their own place and be disturbed no more. And violent men shall afflict them no more, as formerly,
11 from the time that I appointed judges over my people Israel. And I will give you rest from all your enemies. Moreover, the Lord declares to you that the Lord will make you a house.
16 And your house and your kingdom shall be made sure forever before me. Your throne shall be established forever.’ ”
Now read v.1 with me again....
Now this would be perfectly fulfilled in the fact that the greatest king of all would come from the line of David…Jesus
But notice a promise for victory against his enemies as well...
1 After this David defeated the Philistines and subdued them, and David took Metheg-ammah out of the hand of the Philistines.
After God made his promise to David...This is very important and we’ll talk about this at the end as well…but here’s the picture…God makes the promise…and David steps out
This is very important and we’ll talk about this at the end as well…but here’s the picture…God makes the promise…and David steps out

After God made his promise to David...This is very important and we’ll talk about this at the end as well…but here’s the picture…God makes the promise…and David steps out
God promises Victory…David believed it and steps in faith to claim it
And twice in this chapter v.6 and 14 we read “And the Lord gave david victory where he went”
Here’s what this chapter declares - God’s faithfulness
App: God wants to take the natural and immerse it in the sudApp: Do you believe the promises of God?
App: Do you believe the promises of God?
GodApp: Do you believe the promises of God?
Do you believe that God will talk care of you if you seek him?
Do you believe that God has taken away your shame?
Do you believe that He’s the ultimate Authority?
Are you walking in that?
So God promised victory and David steps out to claim it…and here we start to see the victorious...
David’s defeats his greatest enemy
David’s defeats his greatest enemy
Now even-though God would say no to that request, He would say yes to something better
He told David “Though you won’t build my house, I’m gonna build yours”
2 sam 7:9
So God was so pleased with David’s heart, that He makes an oath with David saying “I will give you victory over your enemies and I will build a dynasty from you family that would remain forever...
So God was so pleased with David’s heart, that He makes an oath with David saying “I will give you victory over your enemies and I will build a dynasty from you family that would remain forever...

Now this would be perfectly fulfilled in the fact that the greatest king of all would come from the line of David…Jesus
But notice a promise for victory against his enemies as well...
Let’s recall David’s response...
18 Then King David went in and sat before the Lord and said, “Who am I, O Lord God, and what is my house, that you have brought me thus far?
19 And yet this was a small thing in your eyes, O Lord God. You have spoken also of your servant’s house for a great while to come, and this is instruction for mankind, O Lord God!
20 And what more can David say to you? For you know your servant, O Lord God!
21 Because of your promise, and according to your own heart, you have brought about all this greatness, to make your servant know it.
22 Therefore you are great, O Lord God. For there is none like you, and there is no God besides you, according to all that we have heard with our ears.
2 sam 7:18
David is simply overwhelmed by the Grace of God, He didn’t deserve it, But God in his love and faithfulness makes this covenant with David
Now last week I made mention of the fact that some scholars believe that chapter 8 actually comes before chapter 7, because chapter 7:1 says “and God gave David rest form all of his enemies” but there are other scholars who believe that the victories mentioned in chapter 8 flow out of the promises that God made in chapter 7…and thats where I stand as well
That would make the theme of this chapter - “God’s faithfulness to fulfill his promises and God’s grace” and David responding to God’s faithfulness and God’s grace
Insight: There is no greater motivation to do God’s work then His faithfulness and grace
David defeats his greatest enemy
David defeats his greatest enemy
David’s Victories
David’s Victories
So David lunches out to do God’s work propelled by God’s grace and faithfulness…and let’s look at the victories that came about…and first it starts with Israel’s greatest enemy
David defeats his greatest enemy
David defeats his greatest enemy
1 After this David defeated the Philistines and subdued them, and David took Metheg-ammah out of the hand of the Philistines.
2 sam 8:

App: Do you believe the promises of God?
Do you believe that God will talk care of you if you seek him?
Do you believe that God has taken away your shame?
Do you believe that He’s the ultimate Authority?
Are you walking in that?
So God promised victory and David steps out to claim it…and here we start to see the victorious...
First David defeats his greatest enemy - The Philistines
So the enemy David defeats is greatest nemeses of the people of Israel...the philistines...Now if you remember that under the rule of Saul, the philistines were never fully defeated and they would in fact be Saul’s demise…They were strong, they were well armed, Israel had tried to defeat them in the past to no Avail…But here we see David defeated his age old enemy

You know why it happened? Because God said it would...
Now if you remember that under the rule of Saul, the philistines were never fully defeated
You know why it happened? Because God said it would...
David believed and acted
David didn’t let the fact the they had lost before stop him
David defeated the Philistines and subdued them - which means to put down by force
David took Metheg-ammah out of the hand of the Philistines - Theres a lot of debate over what this is:
Some think it’s Gath which is one of the 5 cities of the Philistines
Others think it speaks of the Government of the Philistines
Other think it’s the out-lands around gath
One thing is for sure - It was important…and under Saul, The philistines were taking territory from God’s people, but Now that God’s anointed king in own the throne…God’s people are getting what the enemy stole from them...
App: Do you know that when Jesus the true king is anointed king of your life, Our greatest enemy is defeated...
This world has a great enemy, that claims almost everyone…you out run it, you can’t out buy it, and you can’t wish it away…that enemy is death
Against age old enemies, that could never fall…King Jesus can give you victory…Because he’s strong faithful
But Jesus defeats death for us…Here’s Paul at the end of his life speaking to his spiritual son timothy about this victory
6 For this reason I remind you to fan into flame the gift of God, which is in you through the laying on of my hands, 7 for God gave us a spirit not of fear but of power and love and self-control. 8 Therefore do not be ashamed of the testimony about our Lord, nor of me his prisoner, but share in suffering for the gospel by the power of God, 9 who saved us and called us to a holy calling, not because of our works but because of his own purpose and grace, which he gave us in Christ Jesus before the ages began, 10 and which now has been manifested through the appearing of our Savior Christ Jesus, who abolished death and brought life and immortality to light through the gospel,
8 Therefore do not be ashamed of the testimony about our Lord, nor of me his prisoner, but share in suffering for the gospel by the power of God,
9 who saved us and called us to a holy calling, not because of our works but because of his own purpose and grace, which he gave us in Christ Jesus before the ages began,
10 and which now has been manifested through the appearing of our Savior Christ Jesus, who abolished death and brought life and immortality to light through the gospel,
1
2 tim 1:
The same way David defeated Israel’s greatest enemy, Jesus has defeated our greatest enemy…death
And the same way David took the Metheg-ammah from Philistines…Jesus took the Metheg-ammah from the Devil
So God didn’t just give David over Isreal greatest enemy, but he also gave David victory over one of their oldest enemies
So God didn’t just give David over Isreal greatest enemies, but he also gave David victory over some of their oldest enemies
2 sam
The Cross was Satan’s Metheg-ammah, Satan’s pride…Yet it was the cross that Became Jesus’ glory
So God didn’t just give David over Isreal greatest enemy, but he also gave David victory over one of their oldest enemies
So God didn’t just give David over Isreal greatest enemy, but he also gave David victory over one of their oldest enemies
David defeats a familiar enemy
David defeats a familiar enemy
2 And he defeated Moab and he measured them with a line, making them lie down on the ground. Two lines he measured to be put to death, and one full line to be spared. And the Moabites became servants to David and brought tribute.
So that seems a little brutal, but thats talk about the moabites for a minute. they were what we would call “age old enemies of God’s people”
The Moabites had opposed Israel since the days of Moses ()
And we also know that David was related to the Moabites through his Grand mother Ruth, and he even asks for the moabites to watch over his parents while he was on the run,
Now, it seems like some has happened in his relationship with the moabites perhaps they mistreated or even killed his parents…but whatever the case, The anointed king defeats his age old enemy
App: In that same Way when Jesus is king of your life, not only has “Death” ( your greatest enemy) been defeated, but those age old enemies, that have been with you forever can be defeated
That temper
That addiction
That pride
I think of the word’s of Allen redpath
“I want to say to you in the name of the Lord Jesus that there is no habit that has gone so deep that the power of the blood of Jesus can’t loose, and there is no entrenchment of sin that has gone so far that the power of the risen Lord can’t uproot”
“I want to say to you in the name of the Lord Jesus that there is no habit that has gone so deep that the power of the blood of Jesus can’t loose, and there is no entrenchment of sin that has gone so far that the power of the risen Lord can’t uproot”
“In our lives, the first mark of the sovereignty of Christ is that the habits of years, which have baffled all our efforts and mocked all our struggles, the things which have brought us in shame and confession of failure time and time again to the Lord in contrition and repentance—their power is broken when Jesus is upon the throne.”
There is power to have victory over those old enemies…and the more you Jesus reigns in your life, the more victory you will experience
So David has had victory over his greatest enemy, He’s had victory over his familiar enemies, and Now God give him victory over combined enemies
allied enemies
David defeats his combined enemies
David defeats his combined enemies
2 And he defeated Moab and he measured them with a line, making them lie down on the ground. Two lines he measured to be put to death, and one full line to be spared. And the Moabites became servants to David and brought tribute.
3 David also defeated Hadadezer the son of Rehob, king of Zobah, as he went to restore his power at the river Euphrates.
4 And David took from him 1,700 horsemen, and 20,000 foot soldiers. And David hamstrung all the chariot horses but left enough for 100 chariots.
5 And when the Syrians of Damascus came to help Hadadezer king of Zobah, David struck down 22,000 men of the Syrians.
2 And he defeated Moab and he measured them with a line, making them lie down on the ground. Two lines he measured to be put to death, and one full line to be spared. And the Moabites became servants to David and brought tribute.

2 Sam 8:
2 sam
2 SAM
So theres two things here...
V.4 - David hamstrung all the chariot horses but left enough for 100 chariots - Why did he do this? Because God said in his law “If there ever was a king leading my people, he shall own many horses”
Think about how meticulous David was to obey God’s law, yet the bible would record this man, stealing another man’s wife, getting her pregnant, and killing him off to cover it up
App: You are never to spiritual to be immune to sin…take heed lest you fall
Back to David’s enemies
v.3 David also defeated Hadadezer the son of Rehob, king of Zobah, as he went to restore his power at the river Euphrates - So David heads toward the river Euphrates to claim that territory, why Because God promised that land to God’s people
18 On that day the Lord made a covenant with Abram, saying, “To your offspring I give this land, from the river of Egypt to the great river, the river Euphrates,
So David is heading out taking what God had promised him…and of course he’s met with opposition…There were two Syrian armies, the one stationed at the river Euphrates and the ones stationed in Damascus…and we read that these enemies here combine forces to keep David from claiming that which God promised his people…and the king still wins
Here David heads out to confront a man named Hadadezer…while fight
Insight: The same way David the anointed king defeated the host of enemies…Jesus our anointed king is greater then the host of enemies who oppose us
Do you know that their is a very real spiritual battle taking place on earth?…a host of satan’s forces plotting the demise of God’s people
12 For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places.
Don’t be surprised If spiritual attack gets worse...
Don’t be surprised If spiritual attack gets worse...
But though it’s important to be aware of the demonic realm, we must never be afraid of it
Because knee will bow to Jesus - Even the allied forces of demons who do Satan’s work
Because every knee will bow to Jesus - Even the allied forces of demons who do Satan’s work
I love what Colossians says About Jesus’ finished work on cross, and the victory that was claimed by him that day
13 And you, who were dead in your trespasses and the uncircumcision of your flesh, God made alive together with him, having forgiven us all our trespasses,
14 by canceling the record of debt that stood against us with its legal demands. This he set aside, nailing it to the cross.
15 He disarmed the rulers and authorities and put them to open shame, by triumphing over them in him.
14 by canceling the record of debt that stood against us with its legal demands. This he set aside, nailing it to the cross.
15 He disarmed the rulers and authorities and put them to open shame, by triumphing over them in him.
col 2:13
col 2:
I love this picture -15 He disarmed the rulers and authorities and put them to open shame, by triumphing over them in him - This verse carries the idea of a victorious procession of a conquering general bringing his prisoners of war back to his city and before everyone he brings up the conquered General and puts his foot on the back of his head…humiliating them
Great example: The Gaedarine demoniac: Matt and
Great example: The Gaedarine demoniac: Matt and
Great example: The Gaedarine demoniac: Matt and
App: The same way David was greater then host of enemy armies, Jesus is greater then the host of demonic forces against us
Then look what David does...
David’s decisions
David’s decisions
Here we’re gonna see 3 pretty important things David does in reaction to these victories God has given
6 Then David put garrisons in Aram of Damascus, and the Syrians became servants to David and brought tribute. And the Lord gave victory to David wherever he went.
7 And David took the shields of gold that were carried by the servants of Hadadezer and brought them to Jerusalem.
8 And from Betah and from Berothai, cities of Hadadezer, King David took very much bronze.
9 When Toi king of Hamath heard that David had defeated the whole army of Hadadezer,
10 Toi sent his son Joram to King David, to ask about his health and to bless him because he had fought against Hadadezer and defeated him, for Hadadezer had often been at war with Toi. And Joram brought with him articles of silver, of gold, and of bronze.
11 These also King David dedicated to the Lord, together with the silver and gold that he dedicated from all the nations he subdued,
12 from Edom, Moab, the Ammonites, the Philistines, Amalek, and from the spoil of Hadadezer the son of Rehob, king of Zobah.
6 And when they came to the threshing floor of Nacon, Uzzah put out his hand to the ark of God and took hold of it, for the oxen stumbled.
6 Then David put garrisons in Aram of Damascus, and the Syrians became servants to David and brought tribute. And the Lord gave victory to David wherever he went.
Three really important things here…and we’ll from the bottom to the top
2 sam 6:
2 Sam 8:6
2 SAM 8:6-
Three really important things here
David dedicates the spoils to the house of the Lord
David dedicates the spoils to the house of the Lord
Notice that David takes all the spoils of his victory and dedicates it to the Lord for the construction of the house of God - I find this beautiful because God had just told David “You will not be the one to build my house”
Illustrate - It’s been going to play basketball with your ball in hand and they say “you can’t play, but we need your ball”
App: David though he had been told no by God, still said ”I wanna help, if i can’t build the temple, so be it…but I can fight the battles that bring the resources…that build the temple…I’ll do that”
Can we be like that?
There’s another thing, but lets read the next verse that helps us see it...
2 sam 8
13 And David made a name for himself when he returned from striking down 18,000 Edomites in the Valley of Salt.
13 And David made a name for himself when he returned from striking down 18,000 Edomites in the Valley of Salt.
14 Then he put garrisons in Edom; throughout all Edom he put garrisons, and all the Edomites became David’s servants. And the Lord gave victory to David wherever he went.
2 sam 8:13
Here’s the another one
David sets up garrisons
David sets up garrisons
6 Then David put garrisons in Aram of Damascus…and 14 Then he put garrisons in Edom; throughout all Edom he put garrisons - So David wasn’t just content to procure the procure the victories…he wanted to secure those victories as well…so he fixed Garrisons in those places
14 Then he put garrisons in Edom; throughout all Edom he put garrisons - So David wasn’t just content to procure the procure the victories…he wanted to secure those victories as well…so he fixed Garrisons in those places
14 Then he put garrisons in Edom; throughout all Edom he put garrisons - So David wasn’t just content to procure the procure the victories…he wanted to secure those victories as well…so he fixed Garrisons in those places
A Garrison is something “stationary” like a military post…something fixed in that position to defend it
Illustrated: Have you ever come to church or gone on a retreat and that day was your day, the Lord spoke, and by the power of the Spirit, the Lord granted victory over a certain area of Life, but a few weeks pass, and what you notice is that the victory you once procured is now a thing of the past…why? perhaps it was because you didn’t place garrison in that area of your life, You thought that one time victory was gonna be enough to keep your full time enemy at bay
App: If you want prolonged victory in you need to fix a garrison their to secure it
The victories often happen at - The retreats...The conferences...The deep spiritual highs
Home runs: The retreats...The conferences...The deep spiritual highs
But they are secured though - Reading and Obeying God’s word, Commitment to God’s people …these are tried and true methods to securing victory
9 How can a young man keep his way pure? By guarding it according to your word.
I was reminded of this verse when
9 How can a young man keep his way pure? By guarding it according to your word.
Have you fixed the garrison?
14 And the Lord gave victory to David wherever he went - Now this is the 2nd time the author has said this in this chapter, here and v.6…he wants us communicate an important point...Though David was skilled and made good discussions…David won because the Lord was faithful to keep his promise
App: God wants to take the natural and immerse it in the super natural
God wants to use your abilities..and immerse them in his power and purpose and thats how victory happens...
15 So David reigned over all Israel. And David administered justice and equity to all his people.
You whats so sad about this, this is exactly what God wanted to do for Saul…but Saul was unwilling to fully surrender to the Lord…and the opportunity that was his was given to another...
David organizes his team
David organizes his team
16 Joab the son of Zeruiah was over the army, and Jehoshaphat the son of Ahilud was recorder,
17 and Zadok the son of Ahitub and Ahimelech the son of Abiathar were priests, and Seraiah was secretary,
18 and Benaiah the son of Jehoiada was over the Cherethites and the Pelethites, and David’s sons were priests.
2 sam 8:1
Here’s a few things in closing...
Notice that David didn’t succeed by himself - He had a great team of skilled and dedicated people around him…In order for David to handle the victories God was winning for him, a team needed to be put in place
In
Illustrate: Thats the same with any church…every Sunday it takes a team of dedicated people to accomplish
App: It’s important to understand that as the ministry increases, so must the team…
Notice that David Organizes his Government - It’s important to understand that, that by the very fact the God mentions this…God is in to order and organization
Illustrate: Too often I’ve witnessed phrases like “We’ll just let the Lord lead” as an escape hatch for disorganization and lack of thought
App: If the Lord has given you an opportunity to lead a ministry, give it your best, because thats what God’s grace deserves
Conclusion...
You can take God’s promises
You can take God’s promises
You can take God’s promises seriously and begin to walk in them today
