Intro: We’re continuing our journey through 2nd Samuel…and the life of David
"It is better to fail in a cause that will ultimately succeed than to succeed in a cause that will ultimately fail."
In this life you will have trial’s and tribulations…but always remember the victory has already been won in Jesus
(Prop) We’re continuing in our walk through the life and the reign of King David…and today we’re gonna see a catalog of David’s victories…and in that we will have a chance to talk about the victories that our anointed king Jesus has won for us
He wanted to bring the Ark (A representing of the presence and glory of God) to his new city of operations Jerusalem…now he didn’t get it all right, but his heart was right
Before we start…I to remind you that last week I made mention of the fact that some scholars believe that chapter 8 actually comes before chapter 7, because chapter 7:1 says “and God gave David rest form all of his enemies” but there are other scholars who believe that the victories mentioned in chapter 8 flow out of the promises that God made in chapter 7…and thats where I stand as well…chapter 8 flows out of chapter 7...
He wanted to bring the Ark (A representing of the presence and glory of God) to his new city of operations Jerusalem…now he didn’t get it all right, but his heart was right
The layout
Then last week He wanted to build the Lord’s house…thats a good heart again
David’s victories v.1-5
David’s decisions v.6-18
David’s victories
So David lunches out to do God’s work propelled by God’s grace and faithfulness…and let’s look at the victories that came about…and first it starts with Israel’s greatest enemy
Notice the first 2 words “After this” - We have to ask the question “After what?…After God had made a promise to David...
Here’s God’s promise to David
Now read v.1 with me again....
Now this would be perfectly fulfilled in the fact that the greatest king of all would come from the line of David…Jesus
But notice a promise for victory against his enemies as well...
After God made his promise to David...This is very important and we’ll talk about this at the end as well…but here’s the picture…God makes the promise…and David steps out
This is very important and we’ll talk about this at the end as well…but here’s the picture…God makes the promise…and David steps out

After God made his promise to David...This is very important and we’ll talk about this at the end as well…but here’s the picture…God makes the promise…and David steps out
God promises Victory…David believed it and steps in faith to claim it
And twice in this chapter v.6 and 14 we read “And the Lord gave david victory where he went”
Here’s what this chapter declares - God’s faithfulness
App: God wants to take the natural and immerse it in the sudApp: Do you believe the promises of God?
App: Do you believe the promises of God?
GodApp: Do you believe the promises of God?
Do you believe that God will talk care of you if you seek him?
Do you believe that God has taken away your shame?
Do you believe that He’s the ultimate Authority?
Are you walking in that?
So God promised victory and David steps out to claim it…and here we start to see the victorious...
David’s defeats his greatest enemy
Now even-though God would say no to that request, He would say yes to something better
He told David “Though you won’t build my house, I’m gonna build yours”
Here’s God’s promise to David
2 sam 7:9
So God was so pleased with David’s heart, that He makes an oath with David saying “I will give you victory over your enemies and I will build a dynasty from you family that would remain forever...

But notice a promise for victory against his enemies as well...
Let’s recall David’s response...
2 sam 7:18
David is simply overwhelmed by the Grace of God, He didn’t deserve it, But God in his love and faithfulness makes this covenant with David
Now last week I made mention of the fact that some scholars believe that chapter 8 actually comes before chapter 7, because chapter 7:1 says “and God gave David rest form all of his enemies” but there are other scholars who believe that the victories mentioned in chapter 8 flow out of the promises that God made in chapter 7…and thats where I stand as well
That would make the theme of this chapter - “God’s faithfulness to fulfill his promises and God’s grace” and David responding to God’s faithfulness and God’s grace
Insight: There is no greater motivation to do God’s work then His faithfulness and grace
David defeats his greatest enemy
David’s Victories

First David defeats his greatest enemy - The Philistines
So the enemy David defeats is greatest nemeses of the people of Israel...the philistines...Now if you remember that under the rule of Saul, the philistines were never fully defeated and they would in fact be Saul’s demise…They were strong, they were well armed, Israel had tried to defeat them in the past to no Avail…But here we see David defeated his age old enemy

You know why it happened?
Because God said it would...
Now if you remember that under the rule of Saul, the philistines were never fully defeated
You know why it happened?
Because God said it would...
David believed and acted
David didn’t let the fact the they had lost before stop him
David defeated the Philistines and subdued them - which means to put down by force
David took Metheg-ammah out of the hand of the Philistines - Theres a lot of debate over what this is:
Some think it’s Gath which is one of the 5 cities of the Philistines
Others think it speaks of the Government of the Philistines
Other think it’s the out-lands around gath
One thing is for sure - It was important…and under Saul, The philistines were taking territory from God’s people, but Now that God’s anointed king in own the throne…God’s people are getting what the enemy stole from them...
