A. H.S. Baptism empowers us to witness,
Acts 1:8 ESV
8 But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.”
1. but what r we empowered w/?
a. but what r we empowered w/?
B. H. S. Baptism empowers us with Gifts to witness
1 Corinthians 12:4 ESV
4 Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit;
III. DIGGING-IN
A. The One spirit gives lots o diff gifts
1 Corinthians 12:4–6 ESV
4 Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit; 5 and there are varieties of service, but the same Lord; 6 and there are varieties of activities, but it is the same God who empowers them all in everyone.
1 Corinthians 12:4 ESV
4 Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit;
1 cor 12:4-
these gifts are supernatural in nature!
meaning, knowledge given by the spirit, not by experiences, training, etc.
healing, not through medicine, but the laying on o hands, etc.
not that these natural ways of healing & knowledge don’t have value, but that supernatural gifts r what’s being discussed
1 Corinthians 12:5 ESV
5 and there are varieties of service, but the same Lord;
these supernatural gifts r for the purpose o serving our 1 lord Jesus
Christ dwelling in us by his spirit enables & calls his people to service
these gifts allow us to serve Jesus better
1 Corinthians: An Introduction and Commentary 1. The Variety of Gifts (12:1–11)

that the indwelling Christ enables his people to render service, or perhaps calls them to service

supernatural gifts to serve in natural ways & meeting natural needs
1 Corinthians 12:6 ESV
6 and there are varieties of activities, but it is the same God who empowers them all in everyone.
these gifts r activities which God empowers us all to do
These gifts aren’t for the one operating the gift
1 Corinthians 12:7 ESV
7 To each is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good.
that is to say, the 1 who is prophesying isn’t getting the gift 4 their self, but for the one receiving the prophecy
healing isn’t for the healer, but for the sick
the gifts help us function better within the community
in ro. Paul illust. this w/a metaphor
Ro 12:4
Romans 12:4–5 ESV
4 For as in one body we have many members, and the members do not all have the same function, 5 so we, though many, are one body in Christ, and individually members one of another.
Paul is calling the community of Jesus followers a body
bodies r intricately connected to 1another & though r diff in nature & function, they r all apart o a bigger network
so it is w/us
we r all unique and distinct from ea. other designed to fit & function together as 1
Jesus isn’t saving individual followers, He’s building a community of followers
the gifts, then help us function w/in the community
Romans 12:6 ESV
6 Having gifts that differ according to the grace given to us, let us use them: if prophecy, in proportion to our faith;
Ro
like the people who differ, the serve differently, & there4 need diff. gifts according to those services
this means that ea. person baptized in the spirit have been given gifts, but not every believer has every gift
every believer has a gift o the spirit activated by baptism in the H.S.
Romans 12:4–6 ESV
4 For as in one body we have many members, and the members do not all have the same function, 5 so we, though many, are one body in Christ, and individually members one of another. 6 Having gifts that differ according to the grace given to us, let us use them: if prophecy, in proportion to our faith;
This doesn’t mean that the gifts r only for building up the body & so only function in church services!
Ro 12:4-
remember…
Acts 1:8 ESV
8 But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.”
Acts 1:8
Here the community o believers operate together to witness
food pantry as an ex.
some are serving some o the poor in our community by handing out food, checking folks in, etc.
still others might get a word o knowledge while in conversation w/some o the individuals there
another, might step in and supernaturally heal one who’s sick
Is this how our food pantry functions?
well, not yet!
some o us who God wants to operate w/gift o knowledge isn’t serving their
Food pantry could use some help!
if ur serving in other areas, I’m not talking to u
if ur coming to church regularly on sunday, but not serving anywhere, I am talking to u!
The gifts promote oneness
they help us function better together
Romans 12:5 ESV
5 so we, though many, are one body in Christ, and individually members one of another.
Ro 12:5
they help us function better together
the gifts promote equality
1 Cor 12:
1 Corinthians 12:13 ESV
13 For in one Spirit we were all baptized into one body—Jews or Greeks, slaves or free—and all were made to drink of one Spirit.
if gifts begin to divide rather than unite the flesh is getting involved & this is sin!
if we begin to determine value o individuals based on the gifts the flesh is getting involved & this 2 is sin
