Happy Fathers day!
This message is for all of us. Not just for dad’s, it is for everyone no matter who you are or where you are. If you are watching online this is for you and if you are right here. Now maybe this is going to be a hard subject for you.
This subject has been abused, parents have used this word as a way to mistreat their children. Cowardly abusive husbands have used this word to control their wives, but you see that is not what God intends when he uses the title for today’s sermon and the subject we are going to talk about today.
That word is HONOR.
Honor as God intends it is very different than how the world uses it.
Honor is defined as:
Honor: to regard or treat someone with admiration and respect
Honorable?
This is talked about in the OT and the NT. Let’s look together at some writings from the Apostle Paul. Now I love Paul’s writings. He was a man who was not very fired up about Christians. As a matter of Fact, he had them arrested and imprisoned and stood there while disciples were killed.
But, he had an encounter with Jesus while he was riding a horse to go arrest some Christians. And it changed him. Jesus completely changed the trajectory of his life! and it Ephesians he tells us some important things about HONOR.
Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. “Honor your father and mother”—which is the first commandment with a promise—“so that it may go well with you and that you may enjoy long life on the earth.”
He also goes and to advise Fathers about this idea of honor and not overwhelming their kids.
Fathers, do not exasperate your children; instead, bring them up in the training and instruction of the Lord.
There is this idea of training and instructing with out exasperating your kids.
he then he goes on to talk about anyone with authority. Parents, bosses, police, military, political leaders, ministers.
And masters, treat your slaves in the same way. Do not threaten them, since you know that he who is both their Master and yours is in heaven, and there is no favoritism with him.
if you have authority and you want to say, I’m the boss do what I say. just remember you have a master in heaven. So treat others with respect. treat them right.
This idea of showing honor, is universal, we all should show honor to each other, but we also need to see that we need to
Offer these 2 gifts to one another:
Choose to honor and be honorable.
the way I want to talk about this is an amazing story in the old testament.
This week for homework, I’d encourage you to read all of .
Extreme case of 2 people with a major gap in their relationship.
David had a son name absalom, He was know for his good looks.
Absalom had a full sister named Tamar, the had the same father and mother.
Faithlife Study Bible Chapter 13
Tamar was Absalom’s full sister (v. 4); they had the same mother, Maacah (3:2–3).
Amnon Was David’s son, but he had a different mother. so Tamar was Amnon’s half sister.
Faithlife Study Bible Chapter 13
Absalom the son of David had David’s third eldest son, beloved by David and renowned for his good looks (14:25).
Faithlife Study Bible Chapter 13
Absalom the son of David had a beautiful sister Tamar was Absalom’s full sister (v. 4); they had the same mother, Maacah (3:2–3).
Faithlife Study Bible Chapter 13
Amnon the son of David Amnon was Tamar’s half-brother through their father David; Amnon’s mother was Ahinoam of Jezreel (2 Sam 3:2). Amnon was the crown prince—the one who would inherit the throne, according to the rules of kingship based on order of birth.
Now, Amnon had an obsession with his half sister tamar.
So, Amnon was the half-brother of Tamar, as they shared the same father, David. Tamar is described as a virgin and “beautiful,” and Amnon was highly attracted to her (). Amnon did not know what to do about his infatuation, and he soon confided in a friend named Jonadab. Jonadab was “very shrewd” and gave Amnon a plan, saying,
“Go to bed and pretend to be ill. . . . When your father comes to see you, say to him, ‘I would like my sister Tamar to come and give me something to eat. Let her prepare the food in my sight so I may watch her and then eat it from her hand’” (). The idea was to get Amnon and Tamar alone together, and then Amnon could do as he pleased.
Amnon followed this evil plan. He asked for his half-sister to bring him some food, and Tamar, out of obedience to her father and the kindness of her heart, did so. Amnon sent everyone else out of the room and asked Tamar to come closer. Rather than take the food she offered, Amnon grabbed Tamar and tried to wrestle her into the bed. Tamar firmly refused the incestuous relationship, crying out, “No, my brother! . . . Don’t do this wicked thing” (). Amnon then forced himself upon Tamar and raped her ().
Disgusting, for him to use her desire to honor her father to his advantage.
Afterwards, Amnon was said to hate Tamar more than he had “loved” her before the rape occurred—it was never really “love” at all, but disgusting lust. Absalom, Tamar’s full-brother, found out about the abuse, and so did David. David’s response was to become “furious” (), but he took no real action.
So Absalom cared for Tamar in his own home and would not speak to Amnon. Two years later Absalom commanded his servants to murder Amnon in revenge (). Absalom fled the country for a time
Why didn’t David punish Amnon for his sin against Tamar?
Many reasons have been suggested.
One likely reason is that Amnon was David’s son and that David had been guilty of sexual sin himself (in the case of Bathsheba)—therefore, in the case of Amnon and Tamar, he felt inadequate to judge. Dad’s maybe you are in this spot. You might hold back talking to your kids, because you have sinned, you aren’t perfect. Well that’s OK, our kids need our connection, not our perfection.
Another possible reason is that there was no witness to the crime. Amnon’s friend Jonadab had carefully orchestrated the crime to avoid the possibility of witnesses; therefore, there was no way to prove the crime according to Jewish law.
Regardless of the reason, Absalom took matters into his own hands. He avenged Tamar by killing their half-brother Amnon, though it resulted in many problems for himself.
Absalom lived away from his family for three years after the murder and then lived for an additional period in Jerusalem before seeing his father’s face. Absalom would also later seek to usurp his father’s throne, resulting in his own death.
The wretched, tragic story of Amnon and Tamar highlights some of the problems associated with sexual sin and its aftermath. No one should experience the treatment Tamar endured, and it is important to respond to such situations with integrity and justice. David neglected justice, and Absalom implemented his own standards, creating additional problems in the process.

After Absalom fled and went to Geshur, he stayed there three years. And King David longed to go to Absalom, for he was consoled concerning Amnon’s death.
We don’t know all of what David was feeling. He longed to go, but he didn’t go. HE didn’t step up to be the father, the connector that his son needed.
There is sin and dysfunction all around this story. But here is the amazing part.
God is active in this story, no matter what you are going through God can work through you and through your story. But you have to let him work.
We don’t know what kept David from going to his son, but what keeps us form going? Pride, fear, shame, hurt, anger.
Like water spilled on the ground, which cannot be recovered, so we must die. But that is not what God desires; rather, he devises ways so that a banished person does not remain banished from him. –
Like water spilled on the ground, which cannot be recovered, so we must die. But that is not what God desires; rather, he devises ways so that a banished person does not remain banished from him.
yes, water has been spilled, maybe your relationships are a mess. but God wants to restore relationships. He doesn’t want them to stay spilled and broken.
Something moves a little bit in David’s heart.
David tells them to bring his son back. With some rules.
But the king said, “He must go to his own house; he must not see my face.” So Absalom went to his own house and did not see the face of the king. –
David is told to bring his son back.
But the king said, “He must go to his own house; he must not see my face.” So Absalom went to his own house and did not see the face of the king.
I long for my son, but I don’t want to see his face.
We are seeing inside of David’s heart. What is the message he is sending to his son? It’s a message of punishment, shame, rather than connection and owning his own sin.
Absalom said to Joab, “Look, I sent word to you and said, ‘Come here so I can send you to the king to ask, “Why have I come from Geshur? It would be better for me if I were still there!” ’ Now then, I want to see the king’s face, and if I am guilty of anything, let him put me to death.” So Joab went to the king and told him this. Then the king summoned Absalom, and he came in and bowed down with his face to the ground before the king. And the king kissed Absalom.
So David finally brings him back and this is probably the last time they saw each-other alive.
from here the story really goes south.
absalom goes down to the city gate and starts to cause division. Talks bad about his dad he said,
…“I want to see the king’s face… Then the king summoned Absalom, and he came in and bowed down with his face to the ground before the king. And the king kissed Absalom.” – NIV
“…If only I were appointed judge in the land…and so he stole the hearts of the people of Israel.” – NIV
“…If only I were appointed judge in the land…and so he stole the hearts of the people of Israel.” – NIV
Absolom let the hurt and bitterness affect him. He let it seep into his soul, it started to affect everything about who he was, and he started to take over the kingdom from his father.
The people start to turn on David, he enters a town and someone is cursing him.
David then said to Abishai and all his officials, “My son, my own flesh and blood, is trying to kill me. How much more, then, this Benjamite! Leave him alone; let him curse, for the Lord has told him to. – NIV
David just takes it he is hurt, he is angry and it sounds like maybe he’s depressed.
So absalom is trying to take the kingdom from David, in the beginning of the story we read that Absalom has this long full hair, and Absalom is riding along and his hair gets stuck in a tree while he is riding under it, so he is hanging by his hear from a tree and David’s men find him there, and they kill him.
The king was shaken. He went up to the room over the gateway and wept. As he went, he said: “O my son Absalom! My son, my son Absalom! If only I had died instead of you—O Absalom, my son, my son!” – NIV
It didn’t have to be this way, this dysfunction. This is a messed up family. David is full regret and wishes he would have done it differently.
And yet, God was involved, God had his hand in it. God ultimately redeems this story. He helps the heart of david, but David’s sin and lack of action caused David a lot of hurt and lose. It didn’t need to be that way, but no matter where you are today, God can redeem your story.
I want to go back to the new testament for a bit and look at another letter that Paul wrote to the christians in Rome. It was a big city, with lots of cultures and it was a hub for all kinds of people.
He writes not just about theology, but he writes to them talking about how to act as a Christian.
Let’s look at this scripture.
If it is possible, as far as it depends on you, live at peace with everyone. – NIV
How far is far… I don’t know how high, I don’t know how low, I don’t know how long.
Even if you don’t believe in God, this is true, what can you do? How can you live in peace?
Let’s jump back to the book of Ephesians.
“In your anger do not sin”: Do not let the sun go down while you are still angry, and do not give the devil a foothold. – NIV
“In your anger do not sin”: Do not let the sun go down while you are still angry, and do not give the devil a foothold.
«Si se enojan, no pequen.» No permitan que el enojo les dure hasta la puesta del sol, ni den cabida al diablo.
Not necessarily wrong to be angry, but its wrong to sin in your anger. but he also says don’t stay in your anger. Don’t stay stuck there. You will give the devil a foot hold. a little piece a spot for him to rest and regroup.
Here is a picture of a climber on a foothold, he can stop and figure out his route. Figure out what he is going to do, where he is going and what his next move will be. Our anger, when we stay stuck in it give satan a foothold...
Get rid of all bitterness, rage and anger, brawling and slander, along with every form of malice. Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you. – NIV
In relationships there is so much we can’t do, you can’t change the other person. You can’t fix them. You can’t make them repent. I can’t make them repent, one of the elders can’t make them repent.
But, there is something you can do. There is on a heart level things we can do. I don’t know what it exactly that looks like, I don’t have all the answers or the specifics. But I do know that as far as it depends on me. As far as it depends on you, live at peace with who?
Everyone.
It doesn’t depend on the other person for my bitterness, their behavior isn’t forcing me to rage, I can choose to be kind, i can choose to be compassionate. I can choose to forgive, that has absolutely nothing to do with that person it has to do with me.
That is how God wants us to act in relationships with others. He wants us to live at peace, as far as it depends on you.
Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you.
Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you.
Since family issues never go away, do everything you can to never walk away.

“While it is hard to swallow your pride, it is even harder to live with regret.” – Jared Herd
Choose to honor and be honorable.
Not matter where your relationships are, no matter the hurt, God wants to bring you back to a place of honor, a place of being honorable.
it isn’t about being perfect, it isn’t about doing right all the time. It is about serving and living for the Righteous God that died and more importantly rose again, to forgive you of your sins.
