“Just a Spoon”

Numbers 7: 11-17;86;89
Intro:
These gifts were brought, not by demand, but by the princes’ own free will. Twelve times we read that the same gifts were brought, but out of those twelve gifts one thing stuck out to me, “One spoon of ten shekels weight of gold, filled with incense.” One spoon of Gold filled with incense. How could a total of twelve spoons mean more than 12 chargers or 12 bowls? I mean the bowl and charger together weighed 200 shekels. Why would God list a golden spoon and set it apart from the rest?
Well I started to consider what a spoon does:

A Spoon Stirs:

2 Peter 1:13 KJV 1900
Yea, I think it meet, as long as I am in this tabernacle, to stir you up by putting you in remembrance;
Peter stirred up the people by instruction and edification.
A spoon is not use to cut things
A spoon is not used to poke things
A spoon is used to stir
Like we said this morning, we all have a reputation, is your reputation one of cutting others or poking others or is your reputation one that stirs others?

A Spoon Serves:

Galatians 5:13 KJV 1900
For, brethren, ye have been called unto liberty; only use not liberty for an occasion to the flesh, but by love serve one another.
Paul instructed the church at Galatia to serve each other with love.
spoons are used to serve food
spoons are used to serve medicine
but
a spoon can also serve poison
Are you serving others with love or are you serving with a bad spirit.
A spoon can serve the sweetest deserts or the deadliest poison.
What we serve matters, serve love not bitterness, serve love not complaints.
Really what I want to look at tonight, is how we can draw near to God in our service, here at church and help others draw near to God out there in the world.
Main:
So how does being a spoon draw you closer to God?

They were Presented Spoons

(offered)
v.12
They were handed over to the Lord, to be used at His disposal.
Ro 12:1 I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service.
When someone presents or offers something to someone else they are saying two things:
1. You can do more with it then I can
2. You deserve it more than me.
When we go before God and present ourselves to Him, we are saying, “Here am I Lord, use me.”

These Spoons Were Presented Willingly

They were not commanded to bring what they brought they just brought it.
similarly we are not commanded to to give ourselves over for His service.
Luke 9:23 KJV 1900
And he said to them all, If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow me.
We must willingly give ourselves over to God. There are many Christians that miss out on the blessings of God because they do not serve Him willingly.

These Spoons Were Presented Joyfully

It does not tell us how these princess brought their offerings, but one can be pretty certain that they brought it with joy.
It was not a burden for them to bring it
It was not a depressing time
It was a joyful time.
It was the dedication of the alter.
Colossians 1:11 KJV 1900
Strengthened with all might, according to his glorious power, unto all patience and longsuffering with joyfulness;
Christ presented Himself with joy
Hebrews 12:2 KJV 1900
Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God.
Presenting our bodies a living sacrifice should be a joy. We are handing our bodies and lives over to the One that created us and gives us breath.
Drawing closer to God involves becoming a presented spoon.

They were Precious Spoons

(gold)
v14
No other item dedicated over these twelve days were gold. Just the spoon.
The other items weighed more but they were just silver.
Verses 85 and 86 give us the total weight value of the items.
Silver was 2400 shekels weight and gold was 120 shekels weight.
If we were to convert a shekel over to our scale of measurement today, one shekel equals .04oz so 2400 shekels times .04 equals 960oz. and 120 shekels times .04 equals 48oz.
still the silver outweighs the gold.
But, if we were to take todays value of Gold which is around $1,993 an oz and silver at $21.97 an oz we would get a grand total for the silver of $21,091.20 and the gold would give a grand total of $95,664
I am sure that gold was just as valuable in number then, as it is today.
Might not have had a lot in weight, but it had a whole lot in value.
The molds that were used to cast these spoons might not have been that pretty, some old sand stone, but once the mold was taken off what came out was so very precious.
This old flesh ain’t much to look at but what’s on the inside is.
If we just put off the old man, we could become so precious to Lord.
Ephesians 4:22 KJV 1900
That ye put off concerning the former conversation the old man, which is corrupt according to the deceitful lusts;
Colossians 3:9 KJV 1900
Lie not one to another, seeing that ye have put off the old man with his deeds;
Romans 6:6 KJV 1900
Knowing this, that our old man is crucified with him, that the body of sin might be destroyed, that henceforth we should not serve sin.
Gold is a picture of perfection. Remember you are in Christ and because you are in Christ, in God’s eyes you are perfect. We should start acting like what we are.
If we are going to draw closer to God this year, we must become presented spoons and we must realize we are precious spoons.

They were Packed Spoons

v.14
(filled)
“Full of incense.”
Incense was used in worship and prayer.
We not only need to be Presented and Precious spoons, but we need to be Spoons packed full with worship and prayer which intern will draw us closer to God and others.
Have you ever tried walking with a full spoon?
What happens?
It overflows it spills.
If you become a packed spoon, people will know it because it will overflow and spill on everything around you.
People you come into contact with will know there is something different about you and it will intrigue them. They just may want to know what it is that makes you different.
Drawing closer to God involves you presenting yourself, realizing you are precious to the One that saved you and it involves being packed full of worship and prayer.
are you a spoon full of incence
Is what you have in your spoon drawing others to God or distracting others from God.
Hey, I want to be a spoon thats presented, precious and packed amen!
Conclusion:
Because of the offerings that were brought by the princes, Moses in verse 89 was able to draw near to God. What we bring, what we offer to God will determine how close we will get to God.
Remember these were freewill offerings. The princess were not commanded to bring these items they brought them because they wanted to.
Are you willing to become a spoon that will draw closer to God and help others to do the same?
