Psalms 34
Concerning David, when he pretended to be insane in the presence of Abimelech, who drove him out, and he departed.
I will bless the Lord at all times;
his praise will always be on my lips.
I will boast in the Lord;
the humble will hear and be glad.
Proclaim the Lord’s greatness with me;
let us exalt his name together.
I sought the Lord, and he answered me
and rescued me from all my fears.
Those who look to him are radiant with joy;
their faces will never be ashamed.
This poor man cried, and the Lord heard him
and saved him from all his troubles.
The angel of the Lord encamps
around those who fear him, and rescues them.
Taste and see that the Lord is good.
How happy is the person who takes refuge in him!
You who are his holy ones, fear the Lord,
for those who fear him lack nothing.
Young lions lack food and go hungry,
but those who seek the Lord
will not lack any good thing.
Come, children, listen to me;
I will teach you the fear of the Lord.
Who is someone who desires life,
loving a long life to enjoy what is good?
Keep your tongue from evil
and your lips from deceitful speech.
Turn away from evil and do what is good;
seek peace and pursue it.
The eyes of the Lord are on the righteous,
and his ears are open to their cry for help.
The face of the Lord is set
against those who do what is evil,
to remove all memory of them from the earth.
The righteous cry out, and the Lord hears,
and rescues them from all their troubles.
The Lord is near the brokenhearted;
he saves those crushed in spirit.
One who is righteous has many adversities,
but the Lord rescues him from them all.
He protects all his bones;
not one of them is broken.
Evil brings death to the wicked,
and those who hate the righteous will be punished.
The Lord redeems the life of his servants,
and all who take refuge in him will not be punished.
Good Morning. Welcome. Glad everyone could join us this morning for great worship with our Lord and Savior.
I would like to take a moment to say Thank you to Pastor Bubba for this opportunity to speak God’s word, Thank you Choir for singing God’s praises, opening our hearts and minds and help carry us into worship , Thank you Pastors for all your love, support, prayers and dedication to God, and Thank you deacons for caring on the goodness of God in everything that you do, And Thank you church for showing the love and goodness of God everyday as you walk in this fallen world.
Pastor has been walking through a series of the “Attributes of God”.
We say that so freely. We speak it without hesitation. To the point that when I said the first part “God is good all the time,” Everyone almost in complete unison followed up with “All the time, God is good.”
But what does it mean? What are we actually speaking when we say this phrase?
Pastor has been walking through a series of the “Attributes of God”.
We talked about,
God is “self-existing”,
He is before all things,
and by him all things hold together.
God being
Great is our Lord, and abundant in power;
his understanding is unlimited.
God is “immutable” He never changes,
“Because I, the Lord, have not changed, you descendants of Jacob have not been destroyed.
Who can separate us from the love of Christ? Can affliction or distress or persecution or famine or nakedness or danger or sword? As it is written:
Because of you
we are being put to death all day long;
we are counted as sheep to be slaughtered.
No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. For I am persuaded that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers, nor height nor depth, nor any other created thing will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.
Romans
God is “self-sufficient” He has no needs,
For just as the Father has life in himself, so also he has granted to the Son to have life in himself.
From the clean animals, unclean animals, birds, and every creature that crawls on the ground,
Genesis
God is “all knowing” Omniscient,
Remember what happened long ago,
for I am God, and there is no other;
I am God, and no one is like me.
I declare the end from the beginning,
and from long ago what is not yet done,
saying: my plan will take place,
and I will do all my will.
God is “always there” Omnipresent,
Is 46:9-10
Where can I go to escape your Spirit?
Where can I flee from your presence?
If I go up to heaven, you are there;
if I make my bed in Sheol, you are there.
If I live at the eastern horizon
or settle at the western limits,
even there your hand will lead me;
your right hand will hold on to me.
“Am I a God who is only near”—this is the Lord’s declaration—“and not a God who is far away? Can a person hide in secret places where I cannot see him?”—the Lord’s declaration. “Do I not fill the heavens and the earth?”—the Lord’s declaration.
Jer
God is “all powerful” Omnipotent,
The heavens were made by the word of the Lord,
and all the stars, by the breath of his mouth.
Ps
Can you fathom the depths of God
or discover the limits of the Almighty?
They are higher than the heavens—what can you do?
They are deeper than Sheol—what can you know?
Their measure is longer than the earth
and wider than the sea.
If he passes by and throws someone in prison
or convenes a court, who can stop him?
Surely he knows which people are worthless.
If he sees iniquity, will he not take note of it?
Who is this King of glory?
The Lord, strong and mighty,
the Lord, mighty in battle.
and God is faithful, He is infinitely, unchanging true.
Know that the Lord your God is God, the faithful God who keeps his gracious covenant loyalty for a thousand generations with those who love him and keep his commands.
Deut
if we are faithless, he remains faithful,
for he cannot deny himself.
What are attributes?
Merriam-Webster defines attribute as
(noun)
1: a quality, character, or characteristic ascribed to someone or something
3: grammar: a word ascribing a quality.
(verb)
2: to regard as a characteristic of a person or thing
In essence, we are discussing the qualities and characteristics of God.
So today’s quality and characteristic is “good”
The goodness of God.
The goodness of God.
As we move forward with the series that Pastor has been preaching the “Attributes of God”
“God is good all the time. All the time God is good.”
We say that so freely. We speak it without hesitation. To the point that when I said the first part “God is good all the time,” Everyone almost in complete unison followed up with “All the time, God is good.”
But what does it mean? What are we actually speaking when we say this phrase?
This brings us to our scriptures for today

I have been involved in an intense battle that no one else can see. Outwardly, I am a nice enough guy (expect Hank, He gets in the way sometimes). I have cleaned up my language, even though that Sailor in me might slip out from time to time. I read my Bible, I have begun to pray more, and I of course attend Calvary (church) on a regular. Even helping our providing assistance where needed and as often as I can. Sometimes to the point of exhaustion.
I came to know the Lord Jesus and was saved back in 1974, when I was just a young lad of only 10. Then Baptized shortly after that. It was real. Going to Sunday school, involved in the youth group, learning the things that was being taught at the moment. Never truly seeking; just learning. I reached the age of 18 and then join the Navy. This began a crucial and important part of my life. I was leaving the 24 hour guidance and direction of my parents. I was on my own. Oh, I knew that I was never alone. I mean that’s what we are taught that God is with us, everywhere we go. I began to live in the world. My parents did a good job, no they did a great job. Living in the world didn’t really change the inner me, but it started too, and I started to adapted some of the worldly attitudes. These attitudes began to affect the traits of my Good character, but my heart was still God’s. What character traits am I speaking of:
Integirty
Honesty
Loyalty
Self-sacricice
Accountability
Self-control
As we walk in this world and when we begin to take on parts of this world and we do change, even though we don’t think we do. It starts small and very subtle. Mine started with self-control. As you live in the world more and you begin to “conform’ to this world. Does that mean you loose all those character traits, no. What we do in essence is unintentionally push God aside to make room for the things of the world. Our charter might not change on the outside, we might live up to the “moral code” or “morality” but our inward character begins to change.
As I began to mature and grow in the world I felt something missing. Something deep. Something from within. So like most people I started to search for what was missing.
I did the “church hopping” all around the world. Never really settling or truly finding what was missing from deep within.
My best friends Patrick and Amy Modglin, who have been with me through some difficult times in my life, knew I was looking for something. So being the good friends they are they told me to go check out Calvary and this crazy pastor they have. Listening to the advice of friends, I did. Of course wouldn’t you know it, when I decided to attend, the crazy pastor was in South Africa. And like most people when you come to church, I enjoyed it but it wasn’t all that exciting. (just being honest.) The people I meet where inviting, warm and friendly. The old carpet and pews not some much! the friendliness did remind me of some old churches I grew up in. If I would have based everything on that day, I would honestly say that I would have came a few more times and then might have just vanished into the background like I have in the past. I would have allowed my work and life to take me back to where I was. (Mind you I was living in depression at this time. Just went through a divorce, and working long, extremely long hours on the ship I was stationed on.) I was not running from God, but I was not seeking Him also. I was feeling empty inside and really didn’t know why?
I felt something tugging at my heart and I decided to stick around, at least until I heard this crazy preacher my friends wanted my to hear. If they went to links to tell me about him then there was something that they saw that I needed to see. Other wise they would have not mentioned it. After hearing and feeling the Word of God move through Pastor I felt a need to stick around awhile longer. I was learning again. Yet I still felt something missing from deep with in. Pastor and the members of Calvary challenged me to grow everyday. Yet something was still missing. That battle was still raging within.
It was about 6 years ago, that I found what I was missing. This was when I had my Abraham and Issac moment. I started to realize that all the things I was doing, even though they were good, wasn’t enough. I realized that Jesus wanted to be the Master of every area of my life. He was seeking a relationship with me. He didn’t wan the visible and superficial parts of me - work, school, sports, activities, finances, my future, relationships. He wanted me.
It’s the struggle and battle that every believer deals with. Some win it or get it very quickly, and others will spend a lifetime wrestling with God’s authority. As for me, this has been a silent struggle that has ragged on for the better part of my adult life, with many battlefronts. Surrender. That has been the biggest struggle. I’m not talking being saved. As I mentioned I accepted Christ as my Lord and Savior when I was around 10. I know that God is in control and in charge. After all, I know that He is God.
I was afraid of what He would do once I turned the steering wheel over to Him, if I allowed Him to be in complete control of my Life. Would He make chaos out of my life as I know it to be now? Would He send me far away from family and friends? I knew that this sacrifice of surrendering would cost me. I was scared that it would be too big of a cost, too high or too painful.
God used a small tactic of “friendship warfare” that is using those closest to you to help push you in the direction that He wants you to go. I had no defense for this. I couldn’t see him clearly where I was at in life , He pushed me into a direction where He could improve my perspective.
I
By sticking around and learning He began to open my eyes and work on my heart. Show me what truly matters in life. Which is… I’ll get to that point in a little bit.
My worldly view of God made me think He only wanted hardship and sacrifice from me, and He would never allow me to experience blessings that He has for me.
As I increased my prayer and talks with Him and brought my wish lists of life to Him, I started to almost hear what God’s response was. “ JD, you know that it’s on my terms and not your own. I made everything, and I want the same position in your heart that I have in the universe. That’s not to crazy to ask from you is it? Remember, I sent my Son for you as proof of my love. I’ve already changed your life.”
Of course my response back would have been something along this line “ Well, God, about that. I”m not sure I want to sign over my life completely, lock, stock, and barrel to you just yet, because if I do ...” I though about all those things I perceived that God might do if I gave Him 100 percent control of my life. More travel to troubling countries, relationships that might be dull, hard sacrifice, early death…”
I asked God “How can I trust you with my life when I’m not sure you will do what’s good for me? Not that I don’t trust you God, it’s just what about?”
Then He showed something to me. While I have been reading more of His Word I read
He did not even spare his own Son but offered him up for us all. How will he not also with him grant us everything?
I had been questioning God’s goodness at the same time I was reading a verse that promises it:
WOW! Let that sink in. I was questioning God’s goodness at the same time He was showing me the verse that promises it.
It was a light bulb that was on and only shining at a 10 watts and then jumped up to 60 watts.
If God had already given me His most valuable and precious gift - His Son - why would he start being cheap, uncharitable or ungenerous with me now?
I started to think, God, so all I need to do is to sign on the line, sign the title of my life over to you because if you love me and if you’re good then, I can trust you?
This was obviously a rhetorical question. Now from this point in my life it was clear that I needed to make Jesus the Lord of my Life because I can see God’s goodness clearly. My focus was on the hardships, the cost and the sacrifice of His lordship that I completely missed the boat and missed the reward.
From
Obedience to Christ is a must and a perquisite to get the very best from God.
My worldly prescriptive and wrong idea of God just undermined my relationship with Him. How could I have thought that God was good and at the same time thought He would do bad things to me?
I’m still learning the lessons years later, to this day. But I understand that the root of most of my problems have been my distorted view of God. Not believing He was good. Oh, it’s one thing to say it, but it’s a whole different story to believe it. i falsely assumed that He did not have my best interests at heart and that a deeper commitment to Him would result in my missing the things I wanted most.
Having this vague impression of God’s goodness and His other attributes was wrong of me; I needed to see and head God clearly, as He has actually revealed Himself.
Understanding God’s goodness began to transform me because it transformed my perspective or view of God.
How do you see God?
What do you think it really means in God’s word when it says God is good?
Defining God’s Goodness
Defining God’s Goodness
Having a clear definition can help us focus on what we can expect from God.
What is
Goodness is defined in the dictionaries with synonyms such as moral excellence, worth, kindness, disposed to the well-being of others.
God’s goodness points to the high quality of His work or the beneficial effects of His character.
The word goodness is translated from the Hebrew words tov or tuv, these terms referring to that quality in God that causes him to bless people, deliver them, and store up future gifts to them. Implying a sense of delight in the one giving and the gift given.
God’s goodness is pleasant, desirable, fair, and generous.
The actions of God takes and the gifts He gives us are all “good things” says it well.
For the Lord God is a sun and shield.
The Lord grants favor and honor;
he does not withhold the good
from those who live with integrity.
Psalms 84:
A great definition of God’s goodness was given to us by A. W. Tozer:
A great definition of God’s goodness was given to us by A. W. Tozer:
The goodness of God is that which disposes Him to be kind, cordial, benevolent, and full of good will toward men. He is tenderhearted and of quick sympathy, and His unfailing attitude toward all moral beings is open, frank, and friendly. By His nature He is inclined to bestow blessedness and He takes total pleasure in the happiness of His people. ~ A. W. Tozer, Knowledge of the Holy, pg. 82.
Our main scripture is connected with David’s dangerous experience with the Philistines in Gath, you can find the story recorded in , after which he had fled to the cave of Adullum. Out of this experience in Gath, David shared in four instructions for his followers, as well as for us today, to help us keep out of tight situations and live a life that pleases God. David shows us what the Lord does for His own.
God’s goodness.
Quick overview, afte
David shows us what the Lord does for His own
God’s goodness is to be experienced.
Taste and see that the Lord is good.
How happy is the person who takes refuge in him!
When we seek the Lord and take refuge in Him we not only discover that He saves us and keeps us but that He also satisfies.
Seek the Lord
“Taste” in this passage isn’t just a sip or a nibble; it implies feeding on the Lord through His Word and experiencing all He has for us.
Fear the Lord
David sought the Lord and was saved from his fears within him
1 peter 2
if you have tasted that the Lord is good.
Trust the Lord
But we do see Jesus—made lower than the angels for a short time so that by God’s grace he might taste death for everyone—crowned with glory and honor because he suffered death.
Heb
And we will do this if God permits.
This is knowing Him better and enjoying Him more. David had a great blessing being delivered from Gath, and an even greater blessing being protected by the Lord after he fled, but the greatest blessing was drawing nearer to God and enjoying His presence, not just His gifts. David found God’s word sweet
How sweet your word is to my taste—
sweeter than honey in my mouth.
and he rejoiced in the goodness of the Lord.
Moses had first hand witness of God’s power, but he wanted more.
Moses wanted a personal, intimate knowledge of that powerful voice and miracle-working provider.
He heard the voice in the burning bush, he saw the miracles in Egypt and the parting of the Red Sea, that freed his people from slavery. He watched as God provided water and manna in the wilderness.
But he wanted more.
Then Moses said, “Please, let me see your glory.”
Moses was boldly asking God “I really want to know you. I want to see you as you are.”
God’s response was:
E
He said, “I will cause all my goodness to pass in front of you, and I will proclaim the name ‘the Lord’ before you. I will be gracious to whom I will be gracious, and I will have compassion on whom I will have compassion.” But he added, “You cannot see my face, for humans cannot see me and live.”
Moses wanted to see God’s glory; but God showed Him something much more accessible and less dangerous - His goodness.
We see what God did in the next few verses.
God put Moses in the cleft of the rock, placed his hand over him, and answered Moses’s request without killing him.
This wasn’t a quite little passing by or “hello, I’m God” meeting.
This was an amazing encounter:
Now the Lord descended in the cloud and stood with him there, and proclaimed the name of the Lord. And the Lord passed before him and proclaimed, “The Lord, the Lord God, merciful and gracious, longsuffering, and abounding in goodness and truth, keeping mercy for thousands, forgiving iniquity and transgression and sin, by no means clearing the guilty, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children and the children’s children to the third and the fourth generation.”
What an experience that would be!
God is infinite in his goodness, eternal in his goodness, holy in his goodness.
You are the object of his affection, and because of his unique and divine nature, all that he expresses comes in an expansive, overwhelming, God-sized generosity toward you.
Once you start to think God like that, you won’t want to stop.
How would that affect your spiritual life?
Knowing God is there waiting with a smile of anticipation over all he longs to do in you and through you, that would make your prayer life a lot easier, wouldn’t it?
And even after we have messed up, things would be a lot easier to have a talk with someone whose intention is to bless and to encourage you because, he is good.
God doesn’t hold grudges. His arms are not crossed. He is not standing over us waiting to point out all your faults and failures then beat us over the head with a club.
He is cordial, open, friendly, understanding, agreeable, and sensitive to your struggle.
He longs to show and express his love, goodness, kindness, and compassion to each and everyone of us. All of us.
God does this not because we have been good. God does this because He is good and wants to. It is part of His very nature and character.
He takes pleasure in our happiness.
He is not down on us because we live in this fallen world; He is for us in the midst of it.
That is how he wants us to see him.
That is how He wants us to experience Him.
These things are what God want’s to flood our heats and minds with as we sing about His goodness.
That’s true worship.
An experience.
Seeing who God really is and responding to that truth from your heart, your life, your time, and all that you are, because you just can’t help it. You become overwhelmed with His generosity and are embraced by His goodness.
How does God reveal His goodness to Us?
How does God reveal His goodness to Us?
God reveals himself through Natural blessings.
God reveals himself through Natural blessings.
We take for granted the order and beauty of the world we live in. We tend to ignore or complain about the daily blessings of the weather, seasons, and life that are evidence of his goodness. Even the natural disasters - the “acts of God” we complain about or frighten us - should actually remind us of God’s amazing constancy in spite of a fallen world.
David wrote a hymn of praise that clebrates God’s goodness and love through the created order - .
They will give a testimony of your great goodness
and will joyfully sing of your righteousness.
The Lord is gracious and compassionate,
slow to anger and great in faithful love.
The Lord is good to everyone;
his compassion rests on all he has made.
Notice the last line. You see the it? “all” that includes you and me. Everyone of us.
That means there is no where in the universe we can go to get away from God’s goodness. He is good to all!
Knowing that Every good and perfect gift comes from him, even the little ones.
We can begin to believe and experience God’s goodness.
Everywhere we are,
everything we see,
everything we smell,
everything we feel
and everything we taste,
every part of our day can remind us of His goodness if we only just start looking.
Through Specific Deliverance
Through Specific Deliverance
God intervenes in crises.
He will always meet us in our acute times of need.
He shows up with help for one reason - because He is good.
is a great example of God delivering his people.
I encourage you to take some time and read this Psalm sometime today. Here is a quick summary:
God redeems the helpless from their enemies because He is good.
God rescues us from the shadow of death because He is good.
God heals our diseases because He is good.
God protects is from the storms that threaten to sink our lives because He is good.
These refer to the countless times in the history of God’s people He stepped in with power to save the day.
Even though God’s plans do not always work out in ways that we want them too, it’s amazing how often we focus on the relatively few difficult circumstances of our lives and tend to forget his repeated, loving acts of deliverance.
It’s really hard to see that when we are living it but that still doesn’t stop God’s goodness.
How has God shown his sheer goodness in your life?
God isn’t good because He does good things for us. And God isn’t good because of something in us.
God is good because of something in Him. He can be nothing else.
Both God and His choices remain good, even when they may not feel or look good to you.
His intrinsic eternal nature, in all attributes, is good.
God really doesn’t have to respond or do anything at all. He responds and acts because He is merciful and He is good.
He longs for you to get to know Him and trust Him that will cause you to turn to Him no matter what.
Why?
Because God is or you! He is in your corner. He wants to bless you.
Once you start to keep track of God’s goodness in your life you will find out that you can’t keep up. His blessings through nature are countless; his rescues are continuous.
Through His Son, Jesus
Through His Son, Jesus
God’s number one piece of evidence, the way God reveals His own goodness most clearly, is through his Son.
Jesus is the best example to show us and illustrate any aspect of God’s character.
He is the image of the invisible God,
the firstborn over all creation.
Colossians
For God was pleased to have
all his fullness dwell in him,
Colossians
Jesus is God’s goodness in the flesh.
We can see God’s goodness in revealed in Jesus in three ways.
First, in the form of the undeserved goodness that he gives to us.
But God proves his own love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.
God sent Christ to die on the cross as our sin substitute. It’s unmerited goodness. We don’t deserve it. I don’t deserve it.
God didn’t do it because we said “ we will be better, We will clean up our acts, we will try harder, We will be better, We will be more faithful, I’ll clean up my language, I’ll be a better boy or girl.”
Not one of those empty promises stirs up God’s goodness. Why? Because they are too late. the damage of sin has already been done.
God showed us His love toward us while we were still sinners, rebels, enemies of God.
How?
By allowing Christ to die in our place.
What was done on the cross shows how much our Father feels about each one of us.
How valuable are we to God, given the price that He’s paid for each one of us?
Think about it… how important, precious, desirable, and deeply loved we must be for God the Father to let Jesus die to rescue us for Himself?
Think about it… if you can grasp that and it sinks in, it will change you deep inside.
The second piece of evidence of God’s goodness in Christ has to do with the promise of future benefits.
He did not even spare his own Son but offered him up for us all. How will he not also with him grant us everything?
Romans 8:
God has already shown his goodness in the biggest way ever. Makes you think twice before you wonder whether or not he will take care of the details.
God loves you; He wants you to know He is good.
But because of our twisted worldly view of God, our problem when it comes to God’s goodness and the rest of the attributes, the wrong view always produces a strong, negative emotional response.
We don’t recognize God’s goodness as long as we are convinced he has other intentions than our welfare.
That’s why God sent His Son, Jesus to die in our place, thereby offering the ultimate proof of His goodness and love.
He is trying to catch our attention through thousands of little details that he takes care of in order to give us a glimpse of his goodness.
If God has already loved us enough to give us his very best, don’t you think he has the best in mind for our future?
God’s generosity at the cross reminds us that not only has God been good to us, but also that God is committed to being good to us in the future.
The Third piece of evidence has to do with his unique role as creator and Mediator between God the Father and his Creation.
Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights, who does not change like shifting shadows. By his own choice, he gave us birth by the word of truth so that we would be a kind of firstfruits of his creatures.
James
God has given us abundant promises of His goodness, and then told us that Jesus is the key.
Where is the one who is wise? Where is the teacher of the law? Where is the debater of this age? Hasn’t God made the world’s wisdom foolish?
Where is the one who is wise? Where is the teacher of the law? Where is the debater of this age? Hasn’t God made the world’s wisdom foolish?
1 Cor
God’s specific, promised goodness comes to us through our relationship with Jesus.
1 corinth
If we want to truly understand and appreciate God’s goodness, we must start and finish with His Son.
God’s goodness, as with all of His attributes, gives us a window which to look through so we can gain a deeper understanding of God.
Looking through that window will transform you.
If you recall, earlier I talked about sticking around and learning, God began to open my eyes and work on my heart. He started to show me what truly matters in life.
Here it is.
