Psalms 34
Good Morning.
Welcome.
Glad everyone could join us this morning for great worship with our Lord and Savior.
I would like to take a moment to say Thank you to Pastor Bubba for this opportunity to speak God’s word, Thank you Choir for singing God’s praises, opening our hearts and minds and help carry us into worship , Thank you Pastors for all your love, support, prayers and dedication to God, and Thank you deacons for caring on the goodness of God in everything that you do, And Thank you church for showing the love and goodness of God everyday as you walk in this fallen world.
Pastor has been walking through a series of the “Attributes of God”.
We say that so freely.
We speak it without hesitation.
To the point that when I said the first part “God is good all the time,” Everyone almost in complete unison followed up with “All the time, God is good.”
But what does it mean?
What are we actually speaking when we say this phrase?
Pastor has been walking through a series of the “Attributes of God”.
We talked about,
God is “self-existing”,
God being
God is “immutable” He never changes,
Romans
God is “self-sufficient” He has no needs,
Genesis
God is “all knowing” Omniscient,
God is “always there” Omnipresent,
Is 46:9-10
Jer
God is “all powerful” Omnipotent,
Ps
and God is faithful, He is infinitely, unchanging true.
Deut
What are attributes?
Merriam-Webster defines attribute as
(noun)
1: a quality, character, or characteristic ascribed to someone or something
3: grammar: a word ascribing a quality.
(verb)
2: to regard as a characteristic of a person or thing
In essence, we are discussing the qualities and characteristics of God.
So today’s quality and characteristic is “good”
The goodness of God.
The goodness of God.
As we move forward with the series that Pastor has been preaching the “Attributes of God”
“God is good all the time.
All the time God is good.”
We say that so freely.
We speak it without hesitation.
To the point that when I said the first part “God is good all the time,” Everyone almost in complete unison followed up with “All the time, God is good.”
But what does it mean?
What are we actually speaking when we say this phrase?
This brings us to our scriptures for today
Psalm 34
Psalms
;
I have been involved in an intense battle that no one else can see.
Outwardly, I am a nice enough guy (expect Hank, He gets in the way sometimes).
I have cleaned up my language, even though that Sailor in me might slip out from time to time.
I read my Bible, I have begun to pray more, and I of course attend Calvary (church) on a regular.
Even helping our providing assistance where needed and as often as I can.
Sometimes to the point of exhaustion.
I came to know the Lord Jesus and was saved back in 1974, when I was just a young lad of only 10.
Then Baptized shortly after that.
It was real.
Going to Sunday school, involved in the youth group, learning the things that was being taught at the moment.
Never truly seeking; just learning.
I reached the age of 18 and then join the Navy.
This began a crucial and important part of my life.
I was leaving the 24 hour guidance and direction of my parents.
I was on my own.
Oh, I knew that I was never alone.
I mean that’s what we are taught that God is with us, everywhere we go.
I began to live in the world.
My parents did a good job, no they did a great job.
Living in the world didn’t really change the inner me, but it started too, and I started to adapted some of the worldly attitudes.
These attitudes began to affect the traits of my Good character, but my heart was still God’s.
What character traits am I speaking of:
Integirty
Honesty
Loyalty
Self-sacricice
Accountability
Self-control
As we walk in this world and when we begin to take on parts of this world and we do change, even though we don’t think we do.
It starts small and very subtle.
Mine started with self-control.
As you live in the world more and you begin to “conform’ to this world.
Does that mean you loose all those character traits, no.
What we do in essence is unintentionally push God aside to make room for the things of the world.
Our charter might not change on the outside, we might live up to the “moral code” or “morality” but our inward character begins to change.
As I began to mature and grow in the world I felt something missing.
Something deep.
Something from within.
So like most people I started to search for what was missing.
I did the “church hopping” all around the world.
Never really settling or truly finding what was missing from deep within.
My best friends Patrick and Amy Modglin, who have been with me through some difficult times in my life, knew I was looking for something.
So being the good friends they are they told me to go check out Calvary and this crazy pastor they have.
Listening to the advice of friends, I did.
Of course wouldn’t you know it, when I decided to attend, the crazy pastor was in South Africa.
And like most people when you come to church, I enjoyed it but it wasn’t all that exciting.
(just being honest.)
The people I meet where inviting, warm and friendly.
The old carpet and pews not some much! the friendliness did remind me of some old churches I grew up in.
If I would have based everything on that day, I would honestly say that I would have came a few more times and then might have just vanished into the background like I have in the past.
I would have allowed my work and life to take me back to where I was.
