Sabbath
Not a day to be lazy
Sabbath was introduced slowly
1. Manna from Heaven-
No punishment
About God providing- food and rest
2. Working on the Sabbath-
Civil punishment (beatings)
About Societal values- No work at all
3.
Death penalty
A sign of God’s covenant with Israel
4. Jesus
For man to know God’s Provision, Healing, Rescue
Sabbath is meant for you to be satisfied in the God that saves
NOT watch your steps and be lazy
So we must use it correctly
- 13 “If you keep from desecrating the Sabbath, from doing whatever you want on my holy day; if you call the Sabbath a delight, and the holy day of the LORD honorable; if you honor it, not going your own ways, seeking your own pleasure, or talking business; then you will delight in the LORD, and I will make you ride over the heights of the land, and let you enjoy the heritage of your father Jacob.” For the mouth of the LORD has spoken.
13 “If you keep from desecrating the Sabbath,
from doing whatever you want on my holy day;
if you call the Sabbath a delight,
and the holy day of the LORD honorable;
if you honor it, not going your own ways,
seeking your own pleasure, or talking business;,E
14 then you will delight in the LORD,
If you would turn away from the pleasures of this world, you would learn how satisfying I am— That is what the sabbath is about
and I will make you ride over the heights of the land,
and let you enjoy the heritage of your father Jacob.”
For the mouth of the LORD has spoken.

- “Be careful to remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy as the LORD your God has commanded you. You are to labor six days and do all your work, but the seventh day is a Sabbath to the LORD your God...Remember that you were a slave in the land of Egypt, and the LORD your God brought you out of there with a strong hand and an outstretched arm. That is why the LORD your God has commanded you to keep the Sabbath day.

Don’t work, remember how I saved you— That is why I am telling you to have a Sabbath
Christian Standard Bible. (2017). (). Nashville, TN: Holman Bible Publishers.
THAT is what the Sabbath is about
Now it has: beauty, full purpose, conviction for the conscience
Not: petty rules
Jesus picks a fight- because He knew he could win
Rest, enjoyment, perfection, relaxation
The
The original purposes was to enjoy the perfect creation; to rest in paradise; a perfect display of God’s glory and goodness and creativity
Then sin entered the world and it brought sickness with it
God went from resting in His paradise to working on restoring His now broken creation
Picking fights is generally a bad idea
Jesus IS respecting the sabbath in the purest form: fixing what sin has destroyed, enjoying God’s creation as whole.
Now it has: beauty, full purpose, conviction for the conscience
Usually intentions are not good (Jesus’ were to show salvation)
You can’t guarantee that you will win
***Richy Alberts***
Bad decision stories: moonshine
stopped drinking at 21yo: 10 ft tall and bullet proof
4 guys with gf, 4 drunk friends
“you think your tough?”
Closed my eyes to get hit, hospital for 2 weeks eyes swollen shut
Richy had a lot of stories about picking fights
Transition?
Not: petty rules
They challenge Jesus on what He does on the Sabbath: “Hey! The Son of Man is Lord over the Sabbath”
He know what it is really about, He can declare its purposes
But Jesus picks a fight, not with destruction - with healing
He did Kindness, Life-giving, healing, defeat of demons on the sabbath.
These held to the original purposes of the Sabbath
Jesus Picks a Fight
Jesus Picks a Fight
Now we don’t follow sabbath rules on Saturdays:
Then sin entered the world and it brought sickness with it
God went from resting in His paradise to working on restoring His now broken creation
Jesus IS respecting the sabbath in the purest form: fixing what sin has destroyed, enjoying God’s creation as whole.
God was working during Creation and then He rested
When mankind invited sin into God’s perfect world, God started His plan to rescue us
Now, in this passage, we see that the Father and Jesus are working
What are they working on?
Removing the sin and sickness (what Jesus just did to that crippled man)
Relationship
Background?
The Son is in full, perfect unity with the Father- VS 19
WHATEVER the Father does the Son does— they do the same things. They are in step
The Father is in perfect unity with the Son- Vs 21
Summary
Summary
Jesus Picks a Fight
Recall from last week-
Jesus heals this man on the sabbath
38 years crippled
Jesus heals, and tells him to pick up his mat and walk
The Jewish hierarchy accuses Jesus of breaking the Sabbath
Jesus responds with “My Father is still working and I am working also”
In order to see what Jesus is saying, we need to understand the Sabbath more fully

Challenging Him
Challenging Him
**Read **
They challenge Jesus on what He does on the Sabbath: “Hey! The Son of Man is Lord over the Sabbath”
He know what it is really about, He can declare its purposes
He did Kindness, Life-giving, healing, defeat of demons on the sabbath.
These held to the original purposes of the Sabbath
Now we don’t follow sabbath rules on Saturdays:
God was working during Creation and then He rested
When mankind invited sin into God’s perfect world, God started His plan to rescue us
Working now to establishing the sabbath as it should be
Now, in this passage, we see that the Father and Jesus are working
What are they working on?
Removing the sin and sickness (what Jesus just did to that crippled man)
Establishing the sabbath as it should be
So, Jesus shows that He is not breaking the sabbath, rather He is upholding the exact purposes of the Sabbath: to bring glory to God by resting in His glorious creation
Looking backward Jesus points all the work - the Gospel story
Relationship
Relationship
Also points to how Jesus’ identity is connected to the Father’s
The Son is One with the Father
The Son is one with the Father
**Verse 19**
Truly/Verily
The Son does what the Father does
Every time, all the time.
Not sometimes or partially
Father Acts, Jesus Acts
So the Jews there put together the dots
“You say that like you’re equal, like your acting is the same and his acting...
...You sound like you two are connected”
Jesus doesn’t deny it. They are on the right track.
The Father is One with the Son
**Verse 22**
They share a beautiful love
It connects and defines them together (God is love) (Holy Spirit)
The Father is one with the Son
Don’t throw away what we just learned
The Son acts WITH the Father
So this isn’t that Jesus doesn’t happen to see the Father Judging and does it without Him
The power that the Father has; the Son has
- The one who believes in the Son has eternal life, but the one who rejects the Son will not see life; instead, the wrath of God remains on him.
So there is a fullness of God judging
Christian Standard Bible. (2017). (). Nashville, TN: Holman Bible Publishers.
I understand this verse this way: The Father has given the full authority of God’s judgment into the hands of Jesus
When Jesus says “guilty” or “innocent” — it counts
The power that the Father has; the Son has
Jesus as Judge
Jesus as Judge
Lets see this in action; easier to understand
The Father sends the Son into the world
The world looks at Jesus and rejects Him, beats Him, executes Him
God’s wisdom says that the most fitting Judge for those who have rejected the Savior is the Savior Himself
And Jesus tells us why God has decided to do things this way. Vs 22-23a:
The Father, in fact, judges no one but has given all judgment to the Son, so that all people may honor the Son just as they honor the Father.
The Father did this SO THAT all people would honor the Son
Christian Standard Bible. (2017). (). Nashville, TN: Holman Bible Publishers.
God set up this system, the Father gave certain responsibilities to the Son SO THAT all people would honor the Son
The Father sent the Son into the world, to die on the cross, to save sinners and come back again to judge the living and the dead SO THAT all people would honor the Son
Honor the Son to honor the Father
Honor the Son to honor the Father
This is glimpse into the Mercy of God: He is opening every opportunity to honor the Son and find salvation
The Father and the Son are so connected that if people do not honor the Son, they do not honor the Father.
V23
In other words, the only way to honor the Father is by honoring the Son
If you have a friend or a family member, or maybe if you are not a Christian- this is the truth you need to hear this morning: You can’t honor God without Jesus.
No other religions offer this. No other places give this teaching. This is uniquely from God Himself
This is uniquely from God Himself
If you want to know God, Jesus is the way.
If you want to honor God, Jesus is the way.
If you want to know true sabbath rest, true satisfaction in God: Jesus is the way.
See, God set it up so that even if you are scared of the judgment coming on your guilty head— It will push you to the Gospel
Because what are you fearing? The Son’s judgment
What is the cure? The Son’s death and resurrection
Gospel Implications
Gospel Implications
**Vs 24**
Jesus moves from The Father and the Son to the Savior and the People
It is an invitation, warning, encouragement… courage and bravery
It is a warning
It is an encouragement
It is courage and bravery
The “truly, verily”
Jesus says uses an interesting phrasing here: “has” 2 times- vs 24
Eternal life: the one who hears my word and believes HAS it
Judgment: the one who hears my word and believes HAS innocence
Hear the invitation: you are hearing this word. Believe in God. Believe in Jesus. Believe and trust in the Savior
Hear the warning: If you don’t believe, you’ll never have eternal life. You will only have guilt and shame and judgment and punishment
Hear the encouragement: those of us who are in His family are rescued and given such great hope— you have life! Your guilty record is replaced by God’s own Son’s perfect record!
Hear what all of this means to us moving forward:
You can be courageous in what you risk for God because He has given you what He promised
Nothing can take it away- it’s yours! You have it!
So what can this world do to you to hurt you? What can people say that will matter?
You can make radical, life-altering, God-sized-risks because you have eternal life
Ask yourself: What is so big that you would only risk it for God?
It also means you can be brave
The fear of being wrong is gone.
The fear of judgment, failure, guilt, misery, loneliness— all taken away from above your head or on your shoulders
Many times we carry something around that should be left at the cross.
Tell me, why are you self-conscious? Is it because Jesus is too small and couldn’t conquer that fear?
Why are you insecure and angry with your life? Is it because God couldn’t manage to provide what you need?
Why are you greedy? Why do you lust? Why are those thoughts allowed to float around in your head?
Is God not good enough?
No. He is good. He is strong. He is able. He has rescued us.
And now we live like it
These sins might not fall away easily, but we won’t resign to just live our lives with them
We will live boldly
The work is finished. Now live it boldly
The Work is finished
Jesus on the cross said “it is finished”
Jesus’ death and resurrection has secured us eternal life, passed from death into life
The victory has been won,
Now live it boldly
I want to challenge each of us in this room and ask this question: are we trusting bravely in the truth that we made it through death, into life because of Jesus?
Be courageous in the faith, be bold in living for Jesus
Because we know the end. We have the victory. You have the gift.
Do you live your life with the title of God’s holy blameless child?
This week: hearts satisfied by God, taking joy in Him
Worshiping Him as He rescues His creation: redeeming it by the work of Jesus
**Pray, Shane announcement**
