Sabbath
Not a day to be lazy
Sabbath was introduced slowly
1. Manna from Heaven-
No punishment
About God providing- food and rest
2. Working on the Sabbath-
Civil punishment (beatings)
About Societal values- No work at all
3.
Death penalty
A sign of God’s covenant with Israel
4. Jesus
For man to know God’s Provision, Healing, Rescue
Sabbath is meant for you to be satisfied in the God that saves
NOT watch your steps and be lazy
So we must use it correctly
- 13 “If you keep from desecrating the Sabbath, from doing whatever you want on my holy day; if you call the Sabbath a delight, and the holy day of the LORD honorable; if you honor it, not going your own ways, seeking your own pleasure, or talking business; then you will delight in the LORD, and I will make you ride over the heights of the land, and let you enjoy the heritage of your father Jacob.”
For the mouth of the LORD has spoken.
13 “If you keep from desecrating the Sabbath,
from doing whatever you want on my holy day;
if you call the Sabbath a delight,
and the holy day of the LORD honorable;
if you honor it, not going your own ways,
seeking your own pleasure, or talking business;,E
14 then you will delight in the LORD,
If you would turn away from the pleasures of this world, you would learn how satisfying I am— That is what the sabbath is about
and I will make you ride over the heights of the land,
and let you enjoy the heritage of your father Jacob.”
For the mouth of the LORD has spoken.

- “Be careful to remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy as the LORD your God has commanded you.
You are to labor six days and do all your work, but the seventh day is a Sabbath to the LORD your God...Remember that you were a slave in the land of Egypt, and the LORD your God brought you out of there with a strong hand and an outstretched arm.
That is why the LORD your God has commanded you to keep the Sabbath day.

THAT is what the Sabbath is about
Now it has: beauty, full purpose, conviction for the conscience
Not: petty rules
Jesus picks a fight- because He knew he could win
Rest, enjoyment, perfection, relaxation
The
The original purposes was to enjoy the perfect creation; to rest in paradise; a perfect display of God’s glory and goodness and creativity
Then sin entered the world and it brought sickness with it
God went from resting in His paradise to working on restoring His now broken creation
Picking fights is generally a bad idea
Jesus IS respecting the sabbath in the purest form: fixing what sin has destroyed, enjoying God’s creation as whole.
Now it has: beauty, full purpose, conviction for the conscience
Usually intentions are not good (Jesus’ were to show salvation)
You can’t guarantee that you will win
***Richy Alberts***
Bad decision stories: moonshine
stopped drinking at 21yo: 10 ft tall and bullet proof
4 guys with gf, 4 drunk friends
“you think your tough?”
Closed my eyes to get hit, hospital for 2 weeks eyes swollen shut
Richy had a lot of stories about picking fights
Transition?
Not: petty rules
They challenge Jesus on what He does on the Sabbath: “Hey!
The Son of Man is Lord over the Sabbath”
He know what it is really about, He can declare its purposes
But Jesus picks a fight, not with destruction - with healing
He did Kindness, Life-giving, healing, defeat of demons on the sabbath.
These held to the original purposes of the Sabbath
Jesus Picks a Fight
Now we don’t follow sabbath rules on Saturdays:
Then sin entered the world and it brought sickness with it
God went from resting in His paradise to working on restoring His now broken creation
Jesus IS respecting the sabbath in the purest form: fixing what sin has destroyed, enjoying God’s creation as whole.
God was working during Creation and then He rested
When mankind invited sin into God’s perfect world, God started His plan to rescue us
Now, in this passage, we see that the Father and Jesus are working
What are they working on?
Removing the sin and sickness (what Jesus just did to that crippled man)
