Introduction:
Baptism is one of the most controversial subjects in all the scriptures.
Over the next few minutes I want us to look at three aspects of baptism and see if we can’t come to an answer concerning this controversial subject.
Discussion:
I. Origin of the Word
A.
The Words “Baptism” and “Baptize” are fairly new words in the English language.
B.
The word is a transliteration of the Greek words “baptizo” and “baptisma.”
C.
These two words just simply carry the connotation of “Immersion.”
D. The translators of the KJV did not practice immersion at the Church of England but rather sprinkling.
E.
Because of this, they transliterated the word instead of translate it.
F.
Had they Translated the word, This is how passages on baptism would read:
1) “Whoever believes and is immersed will be saved, but whoever does not believe will be condemned.”
()
2) “And Peter said to them, ‘Repent and be immersed every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.”
()
3) “Immersion, which corresponds to this, now saves you, not a removal of dirt from the body but an appeal to God for a good conscience, through the resurrection of Jesus Christ.”
()
4) “I immerse you with water for repentance, but he who is coming after me is mightier than I, whose sandals I am not worthy to carry.
He will immerse you with the Holy Spirit and Fire.” ()
II.
Baptisms of the Bible
A.
Baptism of John ()
B. Baptism by Fire ()
C. Holy Spirit Baptism (, ; )
D. Baptism of Moses ()
E. Baptism of Christ (, )
III.
The One Baptism of the New Testament
A) mention several things there are “one of.”
B) One of these ones is baptism (an immersion) , however we just saw that there are clearly 5 baptisms mentioned in the New Testament.
C) Which baptism is Paul talking about?
1) It is not the Baptism of John
- Paul taught the people at Ephesus about the baptism of Christ even though they had the baptism of John ()
- This was unnecessary if the baptism of John is the one baptism.
2) It is not the Baptism By fire
- The baptism of fire is administered by Christ (), He is not here to do so.
- Seems to be referring to hell (unquenchable fire - )
3) It is Not the Baptism of Moses
- A One time event in the old testament.
- Was into the cloud and into the sea, that which they passed unfer and through ()
4) It is Not Holy Spirit Baptism
- Holy Spirit Baptism was a promise, not command ()
- Happened to the Apostles and no one else ()
- When it happened to Cornelius and his house, Peter last recalled this happening “at the beginning” ()
5) It Is The Baptism of Christ
- This is the baptism into the one body ()
- It is how we get into Christ ()
- It is how we die to the old man and raise to a new creature (; , ; )
- It is an appeal to God ()
- It is for the forgiveness of sins ()
Conclusion:
This study leads us to conclude that only by being immersed into water in order to access the blood of Christ can we be saved.
Any failure to follow this command to the fullest extent is a violation of God’s law.
We must believe in Christ, be willing to confess him before men, repent of our sins, and die in the watery grave and then be raised a new creation “after God’s likeness” () in order to have a home in heaven.
Christ’s baptism/immersion is the one true baptism/immersion of the Bible.
