35 On that day, when evening had come, he told them, “Let’s cross over to the other side of the sea.” 36 So they left the crowd and took him along since he was in the boat. And other boats were with him. 37 A great windstorm arose, and the waves were breaking over the boat, so that the boat was already being swamped. 38 He was in the stern, sleeping on the cushion. So they woke him up and said to him, “Teacher! Don’t you care that we’re going to die?”

39 He got up, rebuked the wind, and said to the sea, “Silence! Be still!” The wind ceased, and there was a great calm. 40 Then he said to them, “Why are you afraid? Do you still have no faith?”

41 And they were terrified,ag and asked one another, “Who then is this? Even the wind and the sea obey him!”

As a new semester quickly approaches the pop-quizzes will resume. For the married couples - we know what a pop-quiz looks like. “Honey, what did I just say?”
Such pop-quizzes are tests of what we know or what we have heard.
As I continue to take some online courses a quiz is a part of the curriculum for the instructors. Teachers build a curriculum to take students through for the semester.
Jesus is the master teacher.
Our passage this morning involves a pop-quiz for the disciples. What they experience in this passage was a part of their training. Their classroom if you will.
Jesus had been teaching on faith and now it was a chance for them to activate their knowledge.
At the end of the day - the Lord Jesus wants your heart. That’s what he’s after and as we dive in this morning, let’s look at how Jesus went after their hearts.

The Bible Exposition Commentary Chapter Four: The Servant Conquers! (Mark 4:35–5:43)

Did Jesus know that the storm was coming? Of course He did! The storm was a part of that day’s curriculum. It would help the disciples understand a lesson that they did not even know they needed to learn: Jesus can be trusted in the storms of life. Many people have the idea that storms come to their lives only when they have disobeyed God, but this is not always the case. Jonah ended up in a storm because of his disobedience, but the disciples got into a storm because of their obedience to the Lord.

It is not enough for us merely to learn a lesson or be able to repeat a teaching. We must also be able to practice that lesson by faith, and that is one reason why God permits trials to come to our lives.

The promise of crossing.
Something that terrified me as a kid was storms. Even more terrifying for me growing up in tornado alley were storms at night.
Jesus knew the storm was coming and went anyways. It was time for the master to let his students learn a lesson in faith.
He knows what’s happening, has purpose in his activity, and knows how it’s going to end.
He’s confident in crossing.
Some take this passage and teach that when storms of life hit us, Jesus will calm them. But this isn’t the true message of this passage.
The Bible Exposition Commentary Chapter Four: The Servant Conquers! (Mark 4:35–5:43)

He did not promise an easy trip, but He did promise a guaranteed arrival at their destination.

Faith is the confidence that no matter what wind and waves come your way, the God of the universe is in the boat with you! - Platt
Romans 10:17 CSB
So faith comes from what is heard, and what is heard comes through the message about Christ.
He will get you to the other side.
Our hope is in Heaven. That’s our destination. Enjoying Jesus on the journey.
ILLUS: Rafting with or without a guide
2. His presence in the craft
Jesus doesn’t promise to calm the storms of your life. He promises to be with you through the storm.
Our hope is in Heaven. That’s our destination. Enjoying Jesus on the journey
They had Jesus with them in the boat. What more did they need? Fear replaced their faith in this moment.
They focused on the storm and not their master.
His physical presence was there with them. But later in his ministry he would teach about an even greater reality - the Helper. The Spirit of God that would invade every believer at salvation.
J.D Greear - Jesus inside you is greater than the Jesus beside you.
John 14:17 CSB
He is the Spirit of truth. The world is unable to receive him because it doesn’t see him or know him. But you do know him, because he remains with you and will be in you.
John 14:
We get to demonstrate the manifestation of God’s spirit in us - it’s when we live out our faith. Look at what Jesus goes on to explain.
John 14:22-
John 14:22–23 CSB
Judas (not Iscariot) said to him, “Lord, how is it you’re going to reveal yourself to us and not to the world?” Jesus answered, “If anyone loves me, he will keep my word. My Father will love him, and we will come to him and make our home with him.
Jesus then explains that the Holy Spirit - the Helper will teach them what they have heard.
ILLUS: Ping Pong balls and water
It’s more than just soaking this up for our own personal selfish gain. We show we love Jesus by letting the Spirit lead us in our daily life.
This is faith.
As we allow the Spirit to lead us - we must continually allow him to fill us.
Ephesians 5:16–18 CSB
making the most of the time, because the days are evil. So don’t be foolish, but understand what the Lord’s will is. And don’t get drunk with wine, which leads to reckless living, but be filled by the Spirit:
VPMP-PNM
This is speaking to the unity of the church and harmony of the home in this section.
Be filled - present, active, passive, imperative verb
This can’t be done on our own - it’s submitting and allowing the Spirit to fill us - this is a command!

The marks of a Spirit-filled Christian are not unusual emotional experiences, miracles, and tongues, but rather Christian character.

The Bible Exposition Commentary Chapter Eleven: Heaven in Your Home (Ephesians 5:18–33)

To be “filled with the Spirit” means to be constantly controlled by the Spirit in our mind, emotions, and will.

Wiersbe, W. W. (1996). The Bible exposition commentary (Vol. 2, p. 48). Wheaton, IL: Victor Books.
Not only do we have his promise of getting to the other side and his presence in us through the journey we also have...
Not only do we see his presence with them and the promise of crossing, we also see...
3. His peace among the chaos.
Nothing you experience takes him by surprise.
Like Peter walking on water, we know Jesus is real and powerful but we can get distracted and focus on the storm instead. We can let the chaos win.
Jesus was asleep and resting. He’d had a long day of teaching and was trusting God and able to rest. that’s all he needed.
No matter what we go through, we know that Jesus is not anxious or worried. He’s at peace and in control and we can live accordingly.
Philippians 4:7 CSB
And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus.
4. His power over creation.
4. His power over creation.
As we have discussed, Jesus is going through a life curriculum about faith with his disciples.
The Bible Exposition Commentary Chapter Four: The Servant Conquers! (Mark 4:35–5:43)

How often in the trials of life we are prone to imitate the faithless disciples and cry out, “Lord, don’t You care?” Of course, He cares!

Jesus is giving them the chance to act on their beliefs and teachings they have heard.
The focus of this story isn’t on the wind and waves but on the hearts of the disciples. Jesus rebukes them because of their focus on fear and not faith.
The Bible Exposition Commentary Chapter Four: The Servant Conquers! (Mark 4:35–5:43)

They had heard Him teach the Word and had even seen Him perform miracles, and yet they still had no faith. It was their unbelief that caused their fear, and their fear made them question whether Jesus really cared. We must beware of “an evil heart of unbelief” (Heb. 3:12).

The Bible Exposition Commentary Chapter Four: The Servant Conquers! (Mark 4:35–5:43)

They already knew that He had the authority to forgive sins, to cast out demons, and to heal diseases. Now they discovered that He even had authority over the wind and the sea. This meant that they had no reason ever again to be afraid, for their Lord was in constant control of every situation.

The disciples would have been familiar with passages in OT where God was praised for his power and control over the seas and creation.
they were continuing to grow in their knowledge of who Jesus is. He’s God!
ILLUS: Painting of the son.
... This is to say - when they have the son - they have it all!
An auctioneer went up front and started the day with a painting. It wasn’t a familiar painting and it was evident the people were not interested. It was the painting of someone they did not know. He started the bidding and said “I’ll start at $100…anyone want to bid $100?” Nothing. No response. Then $50, $10, $5...”
From the back a hand goes up and a man said “I’ll bid $5”. going once, going twice, sold!
The man who bid on this painting was the gardener at this estate and knew the family. He knew this painting because it was the son of the family.
The auctioneer then announced that the bidding was closed and the estate sale was finished. He goes on to read the will of the family. The request of the family is to give all the estate to the owner of the portrait painting. This is to say - when they have the son - they have it all!
In christ - the Son - we get Him and we get it all!
We get his promise of crossing
We get his presence through this life and the storms
We get his peace among the chaos and noise of life
And we get his Power living in us to overcome sin and live victoriously.
We can live a life of faith in place of fear when our full trust is in Jesus. The creator and sustainer of the world! The one who has authority over every situation you will ever face!
