ANNOUNCEMENTS

Baptism following the service

LAST WEEK

We began
We confronted Replacement Theology
We confronted the belief that Israel has been extracted from God’s Future Plans
We concluded that God is continuing to work in the Jewish community
We saw a glimpse of what that looks like.

THIS WEEK

We are going to look a little deeper into that picture that Paul was painting.
There was something that Paul didn’t want us to miss.
Something that will change our perspective of Israel, and people forever!

TURN TO

Romans 11:16–36 NKJV
16 For if the firstfruit is holy, the lump is also holy; and if the root is holy, so are the branches. 17 And if some of the branches were broken off, and you, being a wild olive tree, were grafted in among them, and with them became a partaker of the root and fatness of the olive tree, 18 do not boast against the branches. But if you do boast, remember that you do not support the root, but the root supports you. 19 You will say then, “Branches were broken off that I might be grafted in.” 20 Well said. Because of unbelief they were broken off, and you stand by faith. Do not be haughty, but fear. 21 For if God did not spare the natural branches, He may not spare you either. 22 Therefore consider the goodness and severity of God: on those who fell, severity; but toward you, goodness, if you continue in His goodness. Otherwise you also will be cut off. 23 And they also, if they do not continue in unbelief, will be grafted in, for God is able to graft them in again. 24 For if you were cut out of the olive tree which is wild by nature, and were grafted contrary to nature into a cultivated olive tree, how much more will these, who are natural branches, be grafted into their own olive tree? 25 For I do not desire, brethren, that you should be ignorant of this mystery, lest you should be wise in your own opinion, that blindness in part has happened to Israel until the fullness of the Gentiles has come in. 26 And so all Israel will be saved, as it is written: “The Deliverer will come out of Zion, And He will turn away ungodliness from Jacob; 27 For this is My covenant with them, When I take away their sins.” 28 Concerning the gospel they are enemies for your sake, but concerning the election they are beloved for the sake of the fathers. 29 For the gifts and the calling of God are irrevocable. 30 For as you were once disobedient to God, yet have now obtained mercy through their disobedience, 31 even so these also have now been disobedient, that through the mercy shown you they also may obtain mercy. 32 For God has committed them all to disobedience, that He might have mercy on all. 33 Oh, the depth of the riches both of the wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable are His judgments and His ways past finding out! 34 “For who has known the mind of the Lord? Or who has become His counselor?” 35 “Or who has first given to Him And it shall be repaid to him?” 36 For of Him and through Him and to Him are all things, to whom be glory forever. Amen.
PRAY
Romans 11:16–18 NKJV
16 For if the firstfruit is holy, the lump is also holy; and if the root is holy, so are the branches. 17 And if some of the branches were broken off, and you, being a wild olive tree, were grafted in among them, and with them became a partaker of the root and fatness of the olive tree, 18 do not boast against the branches. But if you do boast, remember that you do not support the root, but the root supports you.
Romans 11:16-
PAUL IS PAINTING A PICTURE TO PUT IN PERSPECTIVE THE ENTIRE BIBLE
A TREE IS NOT JUST THE TRUNK, BRANCHES, AND LEAVES . . .
IT ALSO HAS ROOTS AND FROM THESE ROOTS STEM FORTH HEALTH
GOOD HEALTH IF THE ROOT IS HEALTHY
BAD HEALTH IF THE ROOT IS UNHEALTHY.
PAUL EXPLAINS IT THIS WAY:
If the firstfruit is Holy
The Lump is also holy
If the root is Holy
So are the branches

The Health of the root of your belief system makes or breaks your end result.

According to the Bible, Jesus is the Root of Jesse, the Offspring of David
He is the groundwork from which the Tree of Salvation buds forth.
As people believed in Him, the Tree grew
But some branches, being His people
Were broken off because of what they believed
Because they thought that survival was based on their own preservation and not the nutritional dependency on the root.
In other words, they believed that their works spoke louder than their confession of faith
CHURCH IF OUR DEPENDENCY ON JESUS IS BUT FOR A SEASON, WE MAY BECOME BRITTLE AND END UP CUTTING OF THE NOURISHMENT THAT THEY ROOT PROVIDES.
IF WE TRUST JESUS FOR A SEASON AND NOT A LIFETIME, THE FRUITFULNESS WE ONCE EXPERIENCED WILL BECOME A THING OF THE PAST.
WE WILL BECOME LIKE THE BRANCHES THAT PREACHED SELF PRESERVATION AT THE COST OF THE VERY THING THAT KEPT THEM ALIVE.
Friends we need to realize how important it is to depend on Jesus
We need to realize how fickle we are without Him
How unhealthy things can get when He is not at the center of our lives
Our hearts get brittle
Our hearts are hardened
Our pride wells up within us
We say in our hearts “See, I can do it without Him”, “I’m good without Jesus”
Saying these things, while simultaneously admitting that it may lead to a poor end result.
IT WAS A DIFFICULT TIME FOR THE GENTILE IN ROME
THE JEWS HAD MADE THEMSELVES BACK TO ROME AND TRIED TO TAKE BACK THE LEADERSHIP POSITIONS IN THE CHURCH
PAUL, KNEW THAT THEY NEEDED ENCOURAGEMENT AND PERSPECTIVE
SO HE REMINDS THEM OF THEIR PAST TO KEEP THEM HUMBLE
HE SAYS:
You were a wild Olive Tree
Grafted in
Becoming a partaker of the root and the fatness of the Olive Tree
Coming into a space that was foreing to you
A space where you are seen as an outsider
So do not boast against the branches
Do not boast that you are now part of a community that once hated you
Do not boast against those who have been broken off
If you are going to boast about anything
Boast about what made it all possible
Boast about what supports you
Boast about the Root of your Salvation.
HOW WOULD YOU RESPOND?
IF YOU BEING A FOREIGNER WERE ABLE TO BENEFIT FROM ETERNAL PROMISES THAT YOU WERE ONCE ESTRANGED FROM
Romans 11:19-
PROMISES FOREIGN TO YOU AND YOUR CULTURE?
Romans 11:19–24 NKJV
ONE MIGHT GET PRIDEFUL
ONE MIGHT BEGIN TO FEEL LIKE THEY HAVE ARRIVED
ONE MAY GET COMFORTABLE AND ACT LIKE THEY KNOW IT ALL
THIS IS NOT WHAT PAUL IS ENCOURAGING
We should mourn the poor decisions of our friends
We should mourn the apostasy
We should pray for God to open up doors of restoration
Do not be haughty or prideful, but have a healthy fear of the Lord
Let the folly of others frighten you a little bit
Let wages of sin in the lives of others scare you a bit
THE REALITY IS THAT MANY WHO HAVE BEEN BROUGHT UP WITH THE SCRIPTURES HAVE TAKEN THE POWER OF THE RESURRECTION FOR GRANTED.
THEY STARTED WELL, BUT FOR ONE REASON OR ANOTHER, WALKED AWAY FROM WHAT CHRIST PRESENTED TO THEM
THEY STARTED WELL, BUT FOR ONE REASON OR ANOTHER, WALKED AWAY FROM WHAT CHRIST PRESENTED TO THEM
GOD DIDN’T SPARE THESE NATURAL BRANCHES
HE DIDN’T GIVE THEM SPECIAL TREATMENT BECAUSE THEY KNEW THE SCRIPTURES
In fact, He held them to a greater standard
When they chose to walk away, he let them reap what they had sowed.
THE GENTILES NEEDED TO KNOW THAT THERE IS NO PARTIALITY WITH THE LORD
THAT AS EASY AS IT WAS TO BE GRAFTED IN, ONE DECISION HAS THE ABILITY TO LEAD THEM ASTRAY, GROW BRITTLE AND BE CUT OFF FOREVER.
PAUL SAYS:
Consider the severity of God
Consider the severity of God
How severe it is to be cut off
Consider the Goodness of the Lord
How Good He is to have saved you
And How good it is for you to walk in that Salvation.
To know and acknowledge that Goodness and that privilege to know the God that was once foreign to you.
CHURCH, WE MUST CONTINUE TO BELIEVE DESPITE THE TRAJECTORY OF OUR WORLD
NOT JUST TO BE A LIGHT FOR THE GOSPEL
BUT TO BE NOURISHED BY THE ROOT IN SUCH A WAY, THAT MANY HEALTHY DECISIONS STEM FROM THAT NOURISHMENT.
FOR IF THE ROOT IS HEALTHY SO WILL THE BRANCHES BE HEALTHY.
2 Chronicles 7:14 NKJV
14 if My people who are called by My name will humble themselves, and pray and seek My face, and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin and heal their land.
BUT WHAT HAPPENS TO THOSE WHO HAVE FALLEN?
WHAT HAPPENS TO THOSE WHO HAVE BEEN BROKEN OFF?
GOD IS THE GOD OF SECOND CHANCES
IF THEY WOULD DO WHAT THE PROPHETS OF OLD ENCOURAGED THEM TO DO, THE STORY WOULD SHIFT
2 Chronicles 7:14 NKJV
14 if My people who are called by My name will humble themselves, and pray and seek My face, and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin and heal their land.
PAUL SAYS:
PAUL SAYS:
IF GOD CAN TAKE A FOREIGN BRANCH AND GRAFT IT INTO HIS ROOT
HOW MUCH MORE CAN HE RE-GRAFT NATIVE BRANCHES THAT WERE CUT OFF.
WITH THE LORD, ALL THINGS ARE POSSIBLE
Romans 11:25–27 NKJV
25 For I do not desire, brethren, that you should be ignorant of this mystery, lest you should be wise in your own opinion, that blindness in part has happened to Israel until the fullness of the Gentiles has come in. 26 And so all Israel will be saved, as it is written: “The Deliverer will come out of Zion, And He will turn away ungodliness from Jacob; 27 For this is My covenant with them, When I take away their sins.”
ROMANS 11:25-
PAUL’S DESIRE FOR THE CHURCH WAS FOR THEM TO BE EDUCATED
TO KNOW HOW CRAZY IT WAS FOR GENTILES TO BE SAVED
BUT HOW THEY WERE AN ACTIVE ANSWER TO PROPHECY
HE TELLS THEM:
The reason why Israel is blind is because God is actively saving the Gentile Community
What once seemed impossible was coming to fruition before their eyes.
If they were so in tune with the scriptures they would have known it
If they would have payed attention to Hosea, they would have known it
But they were so caught up with their cultural entitlement that they in turn neglected the promises of God which were Yes and Amen in Christ Jesus
AGAIN, DO NOT BOAST ABOUT THEIR FOLLY
As easy as it was for them to get caught up in unbelief
So to us, can get caught up in silly doctrines
So we can get jaded and brittle
So we can suppress the fresh work of the Holy Spirit in our lives.
IN VERSE 26 PAUL SAYS SOMETHING THAT THROWS MOST FOR A LOOP
HE SAYS THAT ALL OF ISRAEL WILL BE SAVED
WHO IS HE TALKING ABOUT?
I BELIEVE HE IS TALKING ABOUT TRUE ISRAEL
THE ELECT OF GOD
THOSE WHO ARE NOT YET, BUT WILL ONE DAY BE
THE ELECT OF GOD
BUT THIS HAS A CAVEAT
HE IS SPEAKING SPECIFICALLY ABOUT JEWISH PEOPLE WHO WILL EXCEPT JESUS
It is something that only God knows
Something that only God can do
It’s hard for us to believe in the moment, but it is something that God has ordained.
His word will not return void.
He will Save
At the very least, from the darkness of the tribulation period will come forth 12,000 from the 12 tribes
Romans 11:28–32 NKJV
28 Concerning the gospel they are enemies for your sake, but concerning the election they are beloved for the sake of the fathers.
11:
IT IS HARD TO BELIEVE BECAUSE RIGHT NOW THEY ARE ENEMIES OF THE GOSPEL
CONCERNING ELECTION, THEY ARE BELOVED BECAUSE OF THEIR HERITAGE
BUT THEIR HERITAGE MUST YIELD TO THE GOSPEL
THEIR FLESH MUST YIELD TO THE SPIRIT
FOR THE GIFT OF SALVATION IS IRREVOCABLE, IT IS UNREPENTED OF
JUST AS WE WERE DISOBEDIENT AT ONE POINT OR ANOTHER IN OUR LIVES.
We obtained Mercy even when we were disobedient
That when the fullness of time came, we would look back at God’s Goodness and Mercy that led us to repentance and Rejoice!
How great is the Lord our God?
How unsearchable are His ways?
How unconditional is His love toward us?
That he shows mercy on people who are at war with Him
That he allows us to make decisions against His will in order for us to understand forgiveness and mercy.
Romans 11:33–35 NKJV
33 Oh, the depth of the riches both of the wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable are His judgments and His ways past finding out! 34 “For who has known the mind of the Lord? Or who has become His counselor?” 35 “Or who has first given to Him And it shall be repaid to him?”
