ANNOUNCEMENTS
Baptism following the service
LAST WEEK
We began
We confronted Replacement Theology
We confronted the belief that Israel has been extracted from God’s Future Plans
We concluded that God is continuing to work in the Jewish community
We saw a glimpse of what that looks like.
THIS WEEK
We are going to look a little deeper into that picture that Paul was painting.
There was something that Paul didn’t want us to miss.
Something that will change our perspective of Israel, and people forever!
TURN TO
PRAY
Romans 11:16-
PAUL IS PAINTING A PICTURE TO PUT IN PERSPECTIVE THE ENTIRE BIBLE
A TREE IS NOT JUST THE TRUNK, BRANCHES, AND LEAVES . . .
IT ALSO HAS ROOTS AND FROM THESE ROOTS STEM FORTH HEALTH
GOOD HEALTH IF THE ROOT IS HEALTHY
BAD HEALTH IF THE ROOT IS UNHEALTHY.
PAUL EXPLAINS IT THIS WAY:
If the firstfruit is Holy
The Lump is also holy
If the root is Holy
So are the branches
The Health of the root of your belief system makes or breaks your end result.
According to the Bible, Jesus is the Root of Jesse, the Offspring of David
He is the groundwork from which the Tree of Salvation buds forth.
As people believed in Him, the Tree grew
But some branches, being His people
Were broken off because of what they believed
Because they thought that survival was based on their own preservation and not the nutritional dependency on the root.
In other words, they believed that their works spoke louder than their confession of faith
CHURCH IF OUR DEPENDENCY ON JESUS IS BUT FOR A SEASON, WE MAY BECOME BRITTLE AND END UP CUTTING OF THE NOURISHMENT THAT THEY ROOT PROVIDES.
IF WE TRUST JESUS FOR A SEASON AND NOT A LIFETIME, THE FRUITFULNESS WE ONCE EXPERIENCED WILL BECOME A THING OF THE PAST.
WE WILL BECOME LIKE THE BRANCHES THAT PREACHED SELF PRESERVATION AT THE COST OF THE VERY THING THAT KEPT THEM ALIVE.
Friends we need to realize how important it is to depend on Jesus
We need to realize how fickle we are without Him
How unhealthy things can get when He is not at the center of our lives
Our hearts get brittle
Our hearts are hardened
Our pride wells up within us
We say in our hearts “See, I can do it without Him”, “I’m good without Jesus”
Saying these things, while simultaneously admitting that it may lead to a poor end result.
IT WAS A DIFFICULT TIME FOR THE GENTILE IN ROME
THE JEWS HAD MADE THEMSELVES BACK TO ROME AND TRIED TO TAKE BACK THE LEADERSHIP POSITIONS IN THE CHURCH
PAUL, KNEW THAT THEY NEEDED ENCOURAGEMENT AND PERSPECTIVE
SO HE REMINDS THEM OF THEIR PAST TO KEEP THEM HUMBLE
HE SAYS:
You were a wild Olive Tree
Grafted in
Becoming a partaker of the root and the fatness of the Olive Tree
Coming into a space that was foreing to you
A space where you are seen as an outsider
So do not boast against the branches
Do not boast that you are now part of a community that once hated you
Do not boast against those who have been broken off
If you are going to boast about anything
Boast about what made it all possible
Boast about what supports you
Boast about the Root of your Salvation.
HOW WOULD YOU RESPOND?
IF YOU BEING A FOREIGNER WERE ABLE TO BENEFIT FROM ETERNAL PROMISES THAT YOU WERE ONCE ESTRANGED FROM
Romans 11:19-
PROMISES FOREIGN TO YOU AND YOUR CULTURE?
ONE MIGHT GET PRIDEFUL
ONE MIGHT BEGIN TO FEEL LIKE THEY HAVE ARRIVED
ONE MAY GET COMFORTABLE AND ACT LIKE THEY KNOW IT ALL
THIS IS NOT WHAT PAUL IS ENCOURAGING
We should mourn the poor decisions of our friends
We should mourn the apostasy
We should pray for God to open up doors of restoration
Do not be haughty or prideful, but have a healthy fear of the Lord
Let the folly of others frighten you a little bit
Let wages of sin in the lives of others scare you a bit
THE REALITY IS THAT MANY WHO HAVE BEEN BROUGHT UP WITH THE SCRIPTURES HAVE TAKEN THE POWER OF THE RESURRECTION FOR GRANTED.
THEY STARTED WELL, BUT FOR ONE REASON OR ANOTHER, WALKED AWAY FROM WHAT CHRIST PRESENTED TO THEM
THEY STARTED WELL, BUT FOR ONE REASON OR ANOTHER, WALKED AWAY FROM WHAT CHRIST PRESENTED TO THEM
GOD DIDN’T SPARE THESE NATURAL BRANCHES
HE DIDN’T GIVE THEM SPECIAL TREATMENT BECAUSE THEY KNEW THE SCRIPTURES
In fact, He held them to a greater standard
When they chose to walk away, he let them reap what they had sowed.
THE GENTILES NEEDED TO KNOW THAT THERE IS NO PARTIALITY WITH THE LORD
THAT AS EASY AS IT WAS TO BE GRAFTED IN, ONE DECISION HAS THE ABILITY TO LEAD THEM ASTRAY, GROW BRITTLE AND BE CUT OFF FOREVER.
PAUL SAYS:
Consider the severity of God
Consider the severity of God
How severe it is to be cut off
Consider the Goodness of the Lord
How Good He is to have saved you
And How good it is for you to walk in that Salvation.
To know and acknowledge that Goodness and that privilege to know the God that was once foreign to you.
CHURCH, WE MUST CONTINUE TO BELIEVE DESPITE THE TRAJECTORY OF OUR WORLD
NOT JUST TO BE A LIGHT FOR THE GOSPEL
BUT TO BE NOURISHED BY THE ROOT IN SUCH A WAY, THAT MANY HEALTHY DECISIONS STEM FROM THAT NOURISHMENT.
FOR IF THE ROOT IS HEALTHY SO WILL THE BRANCHES BE HEALTHY.
BUT WHAT HAPPENS TO THOSE WHO HAVE FALLEN?
WHAT HAPPENS TO THOSE WHO HAVE BEEN BROKEN OFF?
GOD IS THE GOD OF SECOND CHANCES
IF THEY WOULD DO WHAT THE PROPHETS OF OLD ENCOURAGED THEM TO DO, THE STORY WOULD SHIFT
