C. Main Text
6 Having gifts that differ according to the grace given to us, let us use them: if prophecy, in proportion to our faith;
7 if service, in our serving; the one who teaches, in his teaching;
8 the one who exhorts, in his exhortation; the one who contributes, in generosity; the one who leads, with zeal; the one who does acts of mercy, with cheerfulness.
D. Prayer
E. Context
a. Paul says:
6 Having gifts that differ according to the grace given to us, let us use them: if prophecy, in proportion to our faith;
5 so we, though many, are one body in Christ, and individually members one of another.
Ro 6;
1. The gifts exist 2 empower the individuals o the church 2 function 2gether as Jesus’ body as a whole
i. ea. o us r intricately connected to 1another
-& so, though ea. o us function diff. w/diff. gifts according 1’s calling we r all moving 2gether as 1 body
-& that is what unity looks like practically
ii. We r, when functioning 2gether in unity, Jesus’ representative on earth
2. Furthermore, If u’ve been called, use the gifts God has given u!
6 Having gifts that differ according to the grace given to us, let us use them: if prophecy, in proportion to our faith;
i. I wanna make it abundantly clear: “if God has called u in2 a min. (& he has) he wants 2 equip u 4 that min!
-Hence grace gifts
*Ea. o us must b baptized in the H.S. & using God’s gifts in accordance w/the Grace given us by the H.S.
*Paul says “Let us Use ‘em”!
~Yes, when we’re gathered 2gether on Sunday…But even more when we r out in the midst o this fallen world
-We’ve previously covered “prophecy” mentioned in Ro 12:6
3. The next group of gifts we will focus on r:
i. service (this week’s)
ii. exhortation
iii. contribution
iv. mercy
v. helps (found in 1 Cor 12:28)
II. BODY
A. Spiritual Gift of Service
7 if service, in our serving; the one who teaches, in his teaching;
a. Service defined as waiting on/taking care o the practical needs o people & the church (diakoneo)
1. literally servant
b. a Few yrs later we c this word as the root o which Paul uses in...
8 Deacons likewise must be dignified, not double-tongued, not addicted to much wine, not greedy for dishonest gain.
1. Deacon is derived frm the word servant/service
i. thus “serve” is also translated deacon
ii. we see it used 1st in Acts 6… (describe scene b4 reading vs)
2 And the twelve summoned the full number of the disciples and said, “It is not right that we should give up preaching the word of God to serve tables.
3 Therefore, brothers, pick out from among you seven men of good repute, full of the Spirit and of wisdom, whom we will appoint to this duty.
4 But we will devote ourselves to prayer and to the ministry of the word.”
acts 6:2-3
iii. the word “serve” in the phrase “serve tables” is the same word used in our main text “if service in serving”
-I want 2 encourage u that the apostles didn’t consider themselves 2 spiritual 4 such things as practical ministry (we’re called 2 b humble…right?)
*in-fact...
c. The Deacon ministry is practical service by spiritual people
1. Remember the requirements of folks who served as deacons; what were they?
i. good reputation, full o the spirit & wisdom
ii. The deacon position IS A spiritual position & gift…just not the Apostles’ spiritual position
2. & Paul describes the spiritual gift in supernatural terms
So what is the ministry gift of deacon?
i. In our text 2 the Romans, Paul places Service right along side prophecy!
-Thus the gift o serving is a supernatural gift 2 serve in practical matters
-The apostles in acts appoint 7 folks 2 the duty (literally Business)
*They r spiritual men appointed & empowered supernaturally 2 the practical business o the church
-The spiritual gift o service is the supernatural gift of humbly getting ur hands dirty 4 Jesus
*& the official title is Deacon
d. Paul says “if service (the gift) in our serving...”
1. He means that deacons r supernaturally empowered to serve & so, should use this grace in accordance w/ its true nature.
Moo, Douglas J.. The Epistle to the Romans (New International Commentary on the New Testament) (p. 769). Wm. B. Eerdmans Publishing Co.. Kindle Edition.
i. What’s the nature of the gift of service? - Jesus said in...
42 And Jesus called them to him and said to them, “You know that those who are considered rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and their great ones exercise authority over them.
43 But it shall not be so among you. But whoever would be great among you must be your servant,
44 and whoever would be first among you must be slave of all.
45 For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.”
-putting others above urself…dying 2 urself on behalf o others is the action o the spiritual gift…it’s true nature
45 For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.”
ii. Jesus isn’t specifically talking about the deacon ministry, but...
-it’s clear that because o Paul’s use o the word in Ro & 1 Tim, the mentality o the deacon must b:
* humbly lifting up others needs above their own & not 4 their own benefit
e. That makes Deacons a gift to the church!!
B. Our Deacons r a gift 2 GMCC
a. I’m thankful for our deacons, because they serve well
1. They aren’t looking 4 that’a boys, etc.
i. They’re not pwr hungry, but desire 2 serve!
2. They’re looking 4 what’s best for the church
