BODY
A. Spiritual Gift of Service
a. Service defined as waiting on/taking care o the practical needs o people & the church (diakoneo)

1. Deacon is derived frm the word servant/service
i. thus “serve” is also translated deacon
ii.
we see it used 1st in Acts 6… (describe scene b4 reading vs)
acts 6:2-3
iii. the word “serve” in the phrase “serve tables” is the same word used in our main text “if service in serving”
-I want 2 encourage u that the apostles didn’t consider themselves 2 spiritual 4 such things as practical ministry (we’re called 2 b humble…right?)

1. Remember the requirements of folks who served as deacons; what were they?
i. good reputation, full o the spirit & wisdom
ii.
The deacon position IS A spiritual position & gift…just not the Apostles’ spiritual position
2. & Paul describes the spiritual gift in supernatural terms
So what is the ministry gift of deacon?

In our text 2 the Romans, Paul places Service right along side prophecy!
-Thus the gift o serving is a supernatural gift 2 serve in practical matters
-The apostles in acts appoint 7 folks 2 the duty (literally Business)
*They r spiritual men appointed & empowered supernaturally 2 the practical business o the church
-The spiritual gift o service is the supernatural gift of humbly getting ur hands dirty 4 Jesus
*& the official title is Deacon

Paul says “if service (the gift) in our serving...”

He means that deacons r supernaturally empowered to serve & so, should use this grace in accordance w/ its true nature.
