Proverbs 18:22 ESV
22 He who finds a wife finds a good thing and obtains favor from the Lord.
Proverbs Genesis
- God creates and it is good.
Genesis 1:27–28 ESV
27 So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them. 28 And God blessed them. And God said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth and subdue it, and have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over every living thing that moves on the earth.”
Genesis 1:27-
Genesis 1:31 ESV
31 And God saw everything that he had made, and behold, it was very good. And there was evening and there was morning, the sixth day.
Something is missing. What about how this happened? God made Adam. Adam was alone. Chapter 2 gives us more details:
Genesis 1:
Genesis 2:18 ESV
18 Then the Lord God said, “It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him a helper fit for him.”
Genesis 2:24 ESV
24 Therefore a man shall leave his father and his mother and hold fast to his wife, and they shall become one flesh.
Genesis 2:24
Genesis 1:31 ESV
31 And God saw everything that he had made, and behold, it was very good. And there was evening and there was morning, the sixth day.
Genesis 1:31
If the creation of woman is the pinnacle of creation. Her creation changed things from not good to very good. If the creation of the woman made not good to become very good. Then we need to pay attention to this. If finding a wife is a good thing then we need to pay attention to this.
God intended the marriage relationship between a man and a woman to be a good thing. A blessing.
We do not grow up with a dislike of the good. We grow up with a disdain for the bad. NO ONE ever says I don’t want to get married because I saw love and kindness and laughter and genuine intimacy. Instead, they say, why would I want to get married and see constant bickering and fighting over money and petty selfishness?
And so, we need to ask ourselves, what makes for a good marriage?
Turn to your husband and If the creation of the woman made not good to become very good. If marriage is
And we need to ask ourselves, What makes for a good marriage?
Genesis 2:24 ESV
24 Therefore a man shall leave his father and his mother and hold fast to his wife, and they shall become one flesh.
Leave (often lived on the same compound, looked after them in their old age but change your focus and keep honoring),
hold fast (super glue),
one flesh ( a mystical union but a visible union). I desire to seek a relationship is built upon five aspects: the physical, the emotional, the social, the mental, the spiritual. This why Peter says:
1 Peter 3:7 ESV
7 Likewise, husbands, live with your wives in an understanding way, showing honor to the woman as the weaker vessel, since they are heirs with you of the grace of life, so that your prayers may not be hindered.
2 Peter 2:
understanding way - the mental, the social, the emotional
the more precious and delicate vessel - the physical, not a bully or a tyrant, gentleness
heirs together - you find grace together
your prayers - the spiritual
But why are some marriages struggling? Why do some marriages break?
Right after this was the Fall. Eve acted alone, Adam stood passively by, they did not seek God’s help.
This same sinfulness, this rebellion, this desire to do what we want infects all of us.
We need Jesus . He wants us to leave our past, he wants us to cling to him, he wants us to be one with him so that we become like him.
Jesus is the second Adam. He died so that through his gift of salvation we who are not good can receive his goodness.
But there is a second Adam
